Features

The Virtuoso now features the new Baratza Preciso conical 40mm commercial-grade burrs that can be adjusted to 40 different settings allowing you to grind for any coffee-making device from French presses to espresso machines.  With its powerful 480-watt gear-reduction motor and anti-static device, the Virtuoso can handle any coffee grinding situation. And to make grinding for any brew-type simple, the Virtuoso has 2 different ways to activate grinding: a timer switch on the right side of the grinder and a front-mounted push button.

The grounds container on the front of the Virtuoso can catch up to 5oz of coffee grounds a time, and with this grinder’s anti-static device, transferring the grounds to a coffee filter or French press has never been easier. If you choose, you can even remove the grounds container and place your espresso machine’s portafilter beneath the internal coffee-dispensing chute.

To complement the flexibility that this coffee grinder’s internal components allow, the Virtuoso is also built to fit into a wide variety of kitchen decors. The sides and back of the grinder are black, but its top and base are constructed of a satin finished nickel-plated metal for a sleek, understated look. Top it off with an 8oz bean hopper, and you have a grinder that’s both attractive and extremely functional.

What is so special about conical burr grinders that make them better than other designs? By arranging a precisely machined conical screw turning inside of a ribbed cone but not touching, it uses the power of gravity to inevitably make the bean pass through the gap between the screw and the cone. The ribs that are machined into the sides of the screw and the cone help to channel the beans down towards the ever decreasing gap as the screw spins. That gap is the key to the fineness of the grind which can be easily controlled by raising or lowering the screw in the cone to change the size of the gap. This use of gravity and the screw motion allows the grinder to run at less RPM avoiding frictional heat build-up in the grounds which can adversely alter the expected flavor of the coffee.

Does well but a bit coarse

I bought this grinder for use with a Gaggia Baby Twin. We happen to have the Preciso grinder at work. I don't miss having the finer grind control of the Preciso at all and the burrs are the same quality. Its very consistent in its grind. My only concern is I have to adjust this to pretty much the finest or one click short of the finest setting to not get too coarse a grind for the Gaggia. Comparing it to the grind of the unit at work this seems off - I get about (can't be sure its exact) the same grind at about midway ("10") in the grinder at work.

A A Daniel,
I am glad that you are a fan of the Baratza products! They're fantastic, and are a phenomenal company to work with should you ever need to contact them. As far as the grind settings, the Preciso does have many more settings, so it's not surprising that you are using a different setting on the Virtuoso. You may also find that with different beans you may need to crank up the setting as well. One of the many joys of Espresso! It will surely keep you on your toes.

This is my first real coffee grinder and I am thoroughly impressed with this machine. This first thing to notice is the heavy duty construction, a very solid built machine. As for grinding it grinds very consistently time after time for my espresso machine and my drip coffee maker. I was unsure at first of the lack of micro adjustments but it made it a lot more simple for someone just entering the home espresso user, I would recommend this to anyone that wants a high quality grinder that is somewhat simple to use due to the fact there isn't hundreds of grind setting to sift through and at the same time can grind a very consistently fine grind for home espresso machine. I am very happy with this purchase.

Baratza Virtuoso Coffee Grinder - Preciso Burrs

Trying to decide between the virtuoso and the rancilo rocky. There is a big price difference - but I ordered the virtuoso (from somewhere else) and it arrived dead out of the box! I returned it and was so disappointed that I've been trying to look for a different grinder at a similar price point. I haven't seen one yet at a similar price that has as good reviews - and the rocky seems to be the "go-to" for an entry level espresso grinder (I have a gaggia classic). Wondering if I should give the virtuoso another try or go for something else. Any recommendations?

mjackson ♦ reva,
I think you will find the Rocky to be a better built more solid grinder. It will work well. I am sorry you have had problems with the Baratza. You may want to gave the Preciso a chance as it will give you more range of grind adjustment. I do know Baratza if it has a problems does a great job of resolving any problems with great customer service.

I have been using a Capresso Infinity grinder for a few years and have no real complaints. It is kind of loud and sometimes there is static but the static seems to vary with the beans. I am going to retire the one I have from everyday use and use it for the occasional pot of decaf. I have been looking at the Baratza Virtuso at $229 and was wondering if it is worth the extra $130 it would cost. Thanks, Frank

A A Frank,
The Virtuso is a great grinder, and certainly a step up from the Infinity. What kind of brew method are you looking to use it with? It would go great for anything from a French Press up to an entry level espresso machine. If you were planning on going for something like the Silvia, then you would need a grinder that is going to allow for more fine adjustments.

I'm using a Capresso burr grinder and am tired of the mess from dust and static. I'm only doing drip coffee - what are the advantages of this Baratza unit over the Encore? Thanks!

A A John, The major difference between the Virtuoso and the Encore is that the Virtuoso now comes with the upgraded Preciso burrs for a more consistent grind. It also has a wider range of grind fineness (although it has the same 40 grind settings) and grinds faster as well.

I purchased a Baratza Virtuoso Coffee Grinder in September 2010, before that I had a solis burr grinder and something was wearing out and it would keep jamming, and I could not find replacement parts. I could not find a grind setting with the new Virtuoso grinder that would make the coffee taste as good as the solis did. Could it be the precision of the burrs?? Is there a precision burr upgrade kit for the Virtuoso??

mjackson ♦ Steven,

Good question. Does your grinder seem to not change enough as it could be a calibration issue. There is not an upgrade for the burrs.I would suggest going to Baratzas website as they do have some great information on troubleshooting your grinder and that will help. Try here and it I think you may be able to adjust your grinder to get great tasting coffee again. I hope this helps. http://www.baratza.com/troubleshooting/

Is Baratza replacing the grinders of people who bought these? I bought mine about a year and a half ago and I am down to grinding at level 2 for espresso. I was going mad trying to figure out why I had to keep dropping down. Is there anything I can do to get my grinder working again?

I am not sure what the problem is but if you go to Baratza.com they have a great trouble shooting section. If that does not help give them a call as they are very good at customer service and providing help.

Just to add...I have a Gaggia Pure. However, we are an eclectic family with various "Vesuvius" stovetops, a drip, and a French Press. So, I need a versatile grinder.

How does this grinder work with a Gaggia Classic machine? I don't like the dosing feature on the Gaggia grinder since I don't grind that much coffee at a time to where the doser would be effective.

mjackson ♦ Geoff,
This would be a good choice for a grinder and will work well with the Gaggia classic. I would also consider the Rancilo Rocky Doserless as well. The Baratza is more of an all around grinder and the Rocky is really a true espresso grinder, but they should both work.

Have you had any issues with gearbox failure or short life on these grinders? Thanks.

mjackson ♦ Walter,
First, Baratza's grinder now all have a new gearbox that is sturdier than before. It has two points of contact to the burr shaft and is more rugged. They have also reinforced the adjustment mechanism with fiberglass to prevent ware and tare that comes with espresso grinding. This is what has caused many users to struggle with grind settings needing to go progressively finer over time. The latest update that I have heard of was the addition of adhesive under the adjustment mechanism. Due to the fact that the Preciso has been used for a lot more espresso than the other Baratza grinders, the adjustment mechanism was not always staying seated. The added pressure and torque was causing some users to notice their adjustment rings lifting up. The base ring that the adjustment mechanism attaches to now come adhered to the gearbox directly from the factory.
