Baratza Virtuoso Preciso Grinder

Features

With the Baratza Virtuoso Preciso, micro adjustments let you fine tune the grind for optimal results when brewing espresso. Like its predecessor, the Virtuoso, this model has 40 grind settings. However, with the addition of 11 micro adjustments, you’ll be able to tweak fineness levels in between each of the 40 settings to adjust your grind. Alternating between French-press coffee and espresso (and everything in between) has never been easier.

The Baratza Virtuoso Preciso is built to perform like a commercial grinder. It features 40mm conical burrs, hardened for a lifetime of reliability. You’ll have the option of activating the grinder using a push-button control or a timer; the versatile Virtuoso Preciso can grind a single shot or large batches with ease. This unit features a 5oz ground coffee container with anti-static device as well as a PortaHolder that allows for hands-free operation. Despite its sophisticated capabilities, the Virtuoso is exceedingly user friendly, making it ideal for the home.

40 Grind Settings and 11 Micro Adjustments

The detail-oriented Virtuoso Preciso allows you to choose from 40 grind settings to achieve the desired coffee fineness and consistency. It has also been upgraded to include 11 micro adjustments for increased user control. Of the 11 micro adjustments, each range is equal to one step of the macro settings (40 grind settings).

Conical Burrs

The commercial-grade 40mm conical burrs have been designed allow the grind to drop directly into the coffee container to prevent waste. The Virtuoso Preciso’s outer burr can be easily removed, without tools or specialty equipment, for hassle-free maintenance.

Push Button and Timer Operations

A push button, located on the front of the machine, lets you activate grinding operations. If you wish to do other things while the Virtuoso Preciso is grinding, you can take advantage of the integrated timer; just set it to the desired grinding duration and the machine will automatically stop once the cycle is over.

Gear Reduction Motor

The Virtuoso Preciso has a 480-watt gear reduction motor that operate the burrs at 450rpm. The slow speed minimizes heat transfer during the grinding process to preserve coffee flavor and aroma.

Bean Hopper and Coffee Container

The 8oz bean hopper can be removed for simple cleaning and maintenance. The Virtuoso Preciso also has a 5oz ground coffee container. You can grind into the container, which holds enough grounds for a full pot of drip coffee, or remove it to grind directly into a portafilter.

Antistatic System

The Virtuoso Preciso features an Antistatic System for mess-free operation. This system is designed to keep you from ending up with coffee dust during the grinding process; it will also prevent the grind from sticking to the internal components of the machine.

Housing

This versatile grinder has a durable, scratch resistant body that is built to withstand everyday use. The top and base of the machine is made of nickel-plated metal.

Product Spotlight: Baratza Virtuoso Preciso

The coffee community has been anxiously awaiting the Baratza Virtuoso Preciso for over a year. Now that the Preciso has arrived, it certainly will not disappoint.

The Virtuoso has been a wildly popular home grinder for quite some time, garnering high praise for its reliability, efficient operation and compact frame. But if espresso lovers had one gripe, it would be the grinder's lack of micro adjustments. While the 40 standard grind settings are more than adequate for most people, there are some people who desire greater control over their grind. The Virtuoso Preciso is made to cater to them. Along with the 40 macro settings, the Preciso offers an additional 11 micro settings. Each micro range is equal to one macro setting, so you'll be able to fine-tune your grind to get exactly what you need, coarser for French Press or finer for espresso.

Aside from expanded grind adjustments the Preciso also comes with upgraded 40mm conical burrs. Designed for precision, these burrs deliver uniform coffee as well as very precise espresso grinds. With the improved burrs, the Preciso has seen remarkable speed improvements as well. Depending on the grind, you're looking at producing 1.8-2.5 grams per seconds—pretty impressive speeds for a home grinder. Though the first series of the Preciso grinders did not come equipped with these upgraded burrs, Baratza will be happy to replace your burrs if you have purchased one of these units. If your grinder was purchased before November 15, 2010, chances are it was equipped with the old set of burrs and is now eligible for an upgrade. (Be sure to contact sale@baratza.com for more information.)

Expanded grind adjustments and enhanced burrs are sure to make the Preciso a highly sought after grinder, but this model has not strayed too far from the winning Baratza formula. It retains a small, kitchen-counter friendly footprint and easy-to-use controls—attributes that have made previous Baratza grinders so popular with home users. The 480-watt gear reduction motor is powerful enough for most users and the Preciso is relatively quiet for its class. The burrs operate at only 450rpm to reduce heat transfer to your coffee and help preserve flavor and aroma. As an added bonus, the Preciso comes with a hands-free portaholder. Use it in conjunction with the integrated timer and you'll be able to set your portafilter in place, program the grinder to deliver the exact amount of coffee needed and walk away. At under $300, the Preciso is a great investment for espresso lovers looking for a precise, utilitarian burr grinder.

Does Ms. Silvia justice

I got this grinder with my Rancilio Silvia. Before purchase, I was a little concerned with some of the negative reviews, but after speaking with several people, and several sales-people, decided to try it. I have not been disappointed at all! The tables that tell you how to set your grinder for various brews are close enough that I only had to do a very little micro adjusting to get a perfect grind for my Silvia. Perfect, and perfectly consistent. Others have said that there are QC issues with the grinder, but I've seen none of that. I have not had a singe issue with the grinder. The grinder has 2 grounds containers - one to hold grinds and another to allow you to grind directly into a portafilter. The container for grinding coffee not destined for an espresso machine is easy to slide in and out, and has a very good anti-static treatment that keeps the coffee grounds where you put them - not flying all over like my old Breville. There are several adjustments available on the portafilter holder, to allow you to adjust how the portafilter sits in the container so that the grounds fall in appropriately. The timer dial on the side allows you to duplicate grind time within a second or two every time. Or use the instant-on button on the front. The machine is heavy enough that you can push and hold the button without the whole grinder sliding all over the counter. Reproducible results in both quantity of beans ground and grind quality are easy.

What's Best About this Product?

There are little, if any, grounds stuck inside getting stale. The grounds fall directly from the burrs into the portafilter or grounds container, and they don't seem to get stuck anywhere. Timing is easy, as is clean up. While some of the coffee misses the basket while grinding into the portafilter, the portafilter holder catches most of it, leaving very little mess on the counter.

Some Helpful Tips For Using this Product:

Make grinding adjustments while the machine is running, not off. Use great coffee! Play with it a little, the settings on the micro and macro grind adjustments are well-marked, so finding a previous grind setting is easy if you change (provided you remembered to write it down). It's crazy easy to switch from drip to espresso and back reliably.

My Experience With Using This Product:

Coffee Lover

The Coffee I've Tried With This Product:

Many local micro-roasted coffees.

Some Improvements I Would Recommend for This Product:

It would be helpful if the grounds discharged into the center of the portafilter instead of off to the side. The portafilter basket fills unevenly, and if not shaken or re-distributed, falls to the floor of the filter-holder container. It's easy to dump them back into the portafilter, but seems to me it's an avoidable problem. On the grand scale, however, it's a minor complaint about a machine that is simply fantastic.

Some of the Other Machines I've Used:

My last grinder was a Breville (BCG450XL) - not in the same league as the Baratza. I've used the Baratza with both the Racnilio Sylvia and the Technivorm coffee maker. It does awesome justice to both.

Great Grinder

I really like this grinder. I it is fast, quite, and does not leave a lot of grinds in the chute. I really like the ability to macro/micro adjust, and have no problem dialing in the coffee I get. I have tried 5 different espresso blends since getting and all work fine. The portafilter holder really does a good job at catching "Most" of the grinds making clean up great. The only issue I have is that with my expobar portafilter the grinds tend to congregate toward one side of the portafilter;however, this is simple solved by shaking the PF while it fills. I could not be happier in this price range.

This grinder is well built, sturdy and sharp looking with its darker brown plastic housing and the nickel plated base and front. With limited counter space I needed a grinder I could easily remove from the counter and put in a cabinet. The Baratza Virtuoso allows me to do that. I love the fact that I can micro adjust my grind settings with the micro adjustment feature. You can't avoid noise with a grinder, but level this grinder produces when in use is average for a grinder of this size.

Baratza Virtuoso Preciso
Baratza Virtuoso Preciso

Hi, I just received a Gaggia Classic for Christmas. Very excited, but the machine has exposed the shortcomings of my old Solis 166. So now I have a $300 budget for a grinder and I am willing to sacrifice (a little) grind quality in exchange for durability. Ideally, I'd like to use the new grinder for espresso, pour-over and even some French press, but I could use the Solis for the latter grinds. I've heard from some that the Preciso is ideal, but others have warned me about the questionable reliability and constant tinkering. What is your recommendation between the more variable Preciso and the MDF? Will the Preciso hold up? Or is the MDF's rock-solid reliability the winner?

A A Raymond,

I know some people take the Virtuoso apart to adjust the grind settings within the burr set to allow for a finer range of grinds. Out of the box though, I have found that the settings it comes set up with works fine for a machine like the Gaggia Classic, and even the Rancilio Silvia. The MDF is certainly a rock solid grinder. It has a great drive train, consistent grinds, and will last a long time. Due to the doser however, it would not work well for anything other than Espresso. All in all, countless people have ordered and been delighted with both grinders. The choice is really up to you!

I had to adjust the internal adjuster on the ring as suggested by the manufacturer. The Silvia was just pushing the shots out too fast. I used fresh coffee, good tamping etc. Once adjusted I am at 2 Macro and C on the micro. The Baratza website shows you how to make the internal adjustment. I bought this as a package but wonder if the Rocky might be a better fit for the Silvia. Grinder is fast and well built. Grind is very good once you get it dialed in

The Baratza dies need to be calibrated sometimes, but I really like the way it performs. I would stay with this grinder and I agree once it is dialed in it does a great job. Thanks for the positive feedback.

I just purchased the Virtuoso Preciso. I have Gaggia Classic. What grind setting would you recommend I begin with for this combination?

Michael Rosso ♦ Joe...Thank your for your posting to our Super Wall. Which setting you use depends on a number of variables. We usually suggest you setting your grinder at about 3/4 of the way to the finest setting to start, and then adjust from there. I hope this information helps, however if you have anymore questions please feel to contact us directly at 1-888-411-5282 option 1. Thanks.

Zack Smith Tiga, Thanks for the post. All of our machines run on 110. You could use the Virtuoso if you purchased a converter but it may jeopardize the lifespan of the machine. Let us know if you have any other questions.

I am looking to buy a grinder for drip coffee with a Technivorm and espresso with a Solis SL70 (about 5 years old). I was considering the Baratza Virtuoso. However, I wanted to know what I would be getting by buying the Precisio beyond finer grind control. Is there a significant step up in build quality? $300 is a bit steep however I want to make sure I get the right grinder that will last me a few years.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Rick

I thnk based on the machines you have you would be happy withe the Virtuoso. If you get more of a prosumer machine in the future I would really consider the Precisio. It will really do a better job on espresso grind. I would say they have equal build quality and should last you for a while. Please let us know if you have any more questions

Michael Rosso ♦ Christopher...Thanks for your interest in the Baratza Virtuoso Preciso. The Barataza has a removable ground coffee container or you can use a portafilter. The Rancilio is designed for portafilter use only. The Baratza has conical burr while the Rancilio burrs are flat. Baratza has 40 grind settings and the Rancilio has 55 grind settings. Both these grinders are stepped setting grinders. The hopper on the Baratza holds 8 ounces and the Rancilio holds 10.5 ounces. Thanks
