I've had one of these for almost 2 years now and don't see why you would buy anything more expensive. Do not be intimidated by the coffee snobs, just get some consistently ground coffee, experiment with the amount per 4 oz cup, add ALMOST boiling water, and wait 4 minutes. I clean it by hand because I use it everyday. Would put it in the dishwasher, but I don't run that everyday.

Question Submitted by Lynne Ortisi
Can I make espresso with French press? click to open/closeopen and close answer
  • The short answer to that question is no. Espresso is pressure-brewed, so it requires a machine that can push water through ground coffee at the 8-9 bars of pressure necessary for extraction. On the other hand, French press coffee is brewed simply by immersing the coffee grounds in water, steeping them, and then filtering them out. In addition, both brewing methods require different grind fineness for the best results - espresso needs a very fine grind, whereas French press brewing requires coarse grounds. How do I brew with a French press? click to open/closeopen and close answer
  • To brew with a French press, you will put the ground coffee and hot water in first, and let it steep for 3-4 minutes before using the plunger to separate the ground coffee from the brewed coffee. Question Submitted by
How many ounces in a French press 'cup'? click to open/closeopen and close answer
  • The French Press cup measurement is different than the US cup measurement.  A French Press cup is 4 ounces of liquid, so in a 3-cup press, you can make 12 oz of coffee--roughly the size of a normal coffee mug.  So, a 4 cup press with have a 16 oz capacity, an 8 cup press will have a 32 oz capacity, and a 12 cup press will have a 48 oz capacity.  This is a uniform measurement among all French Press manufacturers.

Question Submitted by
How do I brew with it? click to open/closeopen and close answer
  • To brew with a French Press, you want to use about 1 tablespoon of coffee per 4 oz. of water.  A 12 cup press will hold about 48 oz of water (a French Press "cup" is a different measurement from a standard cup), so you’re probably going to use about 12 tablespoons of coffee.  Then you let the coffee steep in the water for 3 to 4 minutes before plunging the grounds down.  After plunging, you’re ready to serve the coffee!  You can learn more about French Presses and take a more in depth look at the brewing process by following the link below to our article on the subject.
