This coffee carafe makes the best coffee in the shortest time. I absolutely love it. Unfortunately my carafe broke by falling and I am at present trying to get a replacement for it.

What could possibly be easier than this? Place the coarse ground coffee (from a burr grinder, not a blade grinder...too much dust) into the carafe, add hot water, allow to steep for 3-4 minutes and press the filter down...a perfect cup of coffee! Super easy way to make 1 nice cup and have it "fresh" every time...way better than brewing 4 cups and allowing the coffee to rot in a carafe all day....coffee prepared like this is about a million dollars at a nice restaurant!

Question Submitted by Lynne Ortisi
Can I make espresso with French press? click to open/closeopen and close answer
  • The short answer to that question is no. Espresso is pressure-brewed, so it requires a machine that can push water through ground coffee at the 8-9 bars of pressure necessary for extraction. On the other hand, French press coffee is brewed simply by immersing the coffee grounds in water, steeping them, and then filtering them out. In addition, both brewing methods require different grind fineness for the best results - espresso needs a very fine grind, whereas French press brewing requires coarse grounds. How do I brew with a French press? click to open/closeopen and close answer
  • To brew with a French press, you will put the ground coffee and hot water in first, and let it steep for 3-4 minutes before using the plunger to separate the ground coffee from the brewed coffee. Question Submitted by Joshua Geller
What grinder should I get for French press? click to open/closeopen and close answer
  • You sound like you’re way ahead of the game as far as knowing what type of grinder you should be looking for. You are very correct in saying that an inexpensive blade grinder will give you a muddy cup and that you don’t necessarily need a grinder that will grind fine enough for espresso. If you’ll only be grinding for French press, there are a few grinders I could recommend - the Bodum Antigua, the Capresso Burr Grinder Select, the Gaggia MM, and the Solis Maestro are probably going to be your best bets. You can learn more about these grinders by following the links below, and compare them side-by-side by clicking on the link to our Compare-O-Matic.

Question Submitted by
Is the carafe plastic? click to open/closeopen and close answer
  • The carafe is not plastic, but is actually a borosilicate glass which is much sturdier than regular glass. You can purchase replacement carafes directly from Bodum by following the link below, or by calling them at 1-877-992-6386. Feel free to contact us again with any further questions.

Question Submitted by
How many ounces in a French press 'cup'? click to open/closeopen and close answer
  • The French Press cup measurement is different than the US cup measurement.  A French Press cup is 4 ounces of liquid, so in a 3-cup press, you can make 12 oz of coffee--roughly the size of a normal coffee mug.  So, a 4 cup press with have a 16 oz capacity, an 8 cup press will have a 32 oz capacity, and a 12 cup press will have a 48 oz capacity.  This is a uniform measurement among all French Press manufacturers.

Question Submitted by
How do I brew with it? click to open/closeopen and close answer
  • To brew with a French Press, you want to use about 1 tablespoon of coffee per 4 oz. of water.  A 12 cup press will hold about 48 oz of water (a French Press "cup" is a different measurement from a standard cup), so you’re probably going to use about 12 tablespoons of coffee.  Then you let the coffee steep in the water for 3 to 4 minutes before plunging the grounds down.  After plunging, you’re ready to serve the coffee!  You can learn more about French Presses and take a more in depth look at the brewing process by following the link below to our article on the subject.

Question Submitted by
Can you brew using hotel coffee packets? click to open/closeopen and close answer
  • The pre-packed coffee that you get in hotel rooms, like all other prepackaged drip coffee, will be too finely ground to produce good results with a French press.  The French press requires grind similar in size to sea salt.  Anything finer will produce a rather "muddy" and grainy cup.  We do not carry anything pre-packaged that would have an appropriate grind for a French press.  For more information on brewing with French Presses, I would recommend taking a look at our article on them.  You can get to it simply by following the link below.

Question Submitted by
Does the unbreakable glass look as nice as regular glass? click to open/closeopen and close answer
  • The borosilicate glass that is used to make these "unbreakable" french presses looks and feels exactly like real glass.  It is simply crafted differently to make it more resistant to breakage.  As long as you are washing it with soap and water, the unbreakable glass will stay clean and clear with no difficulty.

Question Submitted by
What kind of coffee should I use? click to open/closeopen and close answer
  • For French press, any coffee will work as long as it has coarse grind! If you are grinding your own beans, make sure you set your grinder at a high or coarse setting. A drip or espresso grind will just result in a mud like substance at the bottom of your coffee cup. Also please check out the French press article on our website, the link is below.

Question Submitted by
How do you eliminate the "sludge"? click to open/closeopen and close answer
  • The best way to combat "mud" in your cup is by using a coarser ground coffee similar to the size of sea salt.  However, there will always be some sediment that seeps through.  You should also keep in mind that the standard drip coffee grind will be too fine for use with a French Press, and will create more "sludge".  For more information on brewing with a French Press, follow the link below.

Question Submitted by
What makes the glass unbreakable? click to open/closeopen and close answer
  • Borosilicate and polycarbonate are the materials that make the glass unbreakable and are commonly found in glassware products. From personal experience, I believe the glass to be very durable and we have yet to receive any negative feedback regarding these carafes.
