The French Press cup measurement is different than the US cup measurement. A French Press cup is 4 ounces of liquid, so in a 3-cup press, you can make 12 oz of coffee--roughly the size of a normal coffee mug. So, a 4 cup press with have a 16 oz capacity, an 8 cup press will have a 32 oz capacity, and a 12 cup press will have a 48 oz capacity. This is a uniform measurement among all French Press manufacturers.

To brew with a French press, you will put the ground coffee and hot water in first, and let it steep for 3-4 minutes before using the plunger to separate the ground coffee from the brewed coffee. For detailed instructions on this process, please follow the link below to our article on the subject.

The best way to combat "mud" in your cup is by using a coarser ground coffee similar to the size of sea salt.  However, there will always be some sediment that seeps through.  You should also keep in mind that the standard drip coffee grind will be too fine for use with a French Press, and will create more "sludge".  For more information on brewing with a French Press, follow the link below.
