Question Submitted by Rich Taylor
How many ounces are in a French press 'cup'? click to open/closeopen and close answer
  • The French Press cup measurement is different than the US cup measurement. A French Press cup is 4 ounces of liquid, so in a 3-cup press, you can make 12 oz of coffee--roughly the size of a normal coffee mug. So, a 4 cup press with have a 16 oz capacity, an 8 cup press will have a 32 oz capacity, and a 12 cup press will have a 48 oz capacity. This is a uniform measurement among all French Press manufacturers.

Bonjour Monet vs. Bonour Maximus click to open/closeopen and close answer
  • There are only 2 things that set these models apart. The first, which you noted, is the Flavor Lock feature found on the Maximus. This feature allows you to completely separate the coffee and water after brewing by turning the knob on top of the lid, which turns a metal sheild on the filter to cover the mesh. The only other difference between the 2 presses is the color of the knob on the lid - the Monet’s is black and the Maximus’ is stainless steel.

How do I brew with a French press? click to open/closeopen and close answer
  • To brew with a French press, you will put the ground coffee and hot water in first, and let it steep for 3-4 minutes before using the plunger to separate the ground coffee from the brewed coffee. For detailed instructions on this process, please follow the link below to our article on the subject.

Question Submitted by
What kind of coffee should I use? click to open/closeopen and close answer
  • For French press, any coffee will work as long as it has coarse grind! If you are grinding your own beans, make sure you set your grinder at a high or coarse setting. A drip or espresso grind will just result in a mud like substance at the bottom of your coffee cup. Also please check out the French press article on our website, the link is below.

Question Submitted by
How do you eliminate the "sludge"? click to open/closeopen and close answer
  • The best way to combat "mud" in your cup is by using a coarser ground coffee similar to the size of sea salt.  However, there will always be some sediment that seeps through.  You should also keep in mind that the standard drip coffee grind will be too fine for use with a French Press, and will create more "sludge".  For more information on brewing with a French Press, follow the link below.

Question Submitted by
Is there a 1-cup model? click to open/closeopen and close answer
  • The smallest French presses we carry are 3-cup models, however, it is important to note that 3 French press "cups" are equal to 12 oz of coffee - about 1 mug’s worth. This is a standard measurement across French press manufacturers. If you’re looking for a French press that makes 1 mug of coffee, I would recommend taking a look at our 3-cup models like the Bonjour Unbreakable Hugo, Bonjour Eiffel, and Bonjour Monet. You can learn more about these French presses by clicking on the links below.
