Features

A unique espresso machine, the Breville BES860XL Barista Express has an integrated conical burr grinder with dosing controls. You’ll be able to grind your beans and dose directly into the coffee filter in under 60 seconds! Created with convenience and flexibility in mind, the Barista Express comes with two double-wall filters (single and double shot) that take the guesswork out of tamping—ideal for beginners. But, if you enjoy the art of making espresso, the BES860XL also has a set of single-wall filters that allow you to apply your own tamp.

This innovative Breville model has a special tamper with a magnetized lock that can be used attached to the machine, if you intend to work with a double-wall filter. You can also detach the tamper if you prefer a manual tamp or are using a single-wall filter. The Barista Express can be programmed to brew a single or double shot and the grinder settings can be adjusted to suit your needs. With a nice mix of semi-automatic and super-automatic features, the Breville BES860XL is a very well-rounded machine.

Grinding

The BES860XL has a built-in conical burr grinder with adjustable grind settings, for your convenience. Choose from a Dual Wall preset grind setting or 15 grind size options to achieve your desired results. Similarly, a knob located on the front panel lets you take advantage of the pre-programmed Dual Wall setting or manually select your grind volume. The see-through bean hopper and conical burrs are detachable for hassle-free maintenance.

Dosing

The BES8360XL has a hands-free portafilter holder; select the filter size (single or double) and put the portafilter in place; the machine will automatically dose the proper amount of coffee. A button, located by the portafilter holder, allows you to push once for an auto dose or push and hold to manually determine the grind amount.

Tamping

A tamper comes included with the BES860XL, it is magnetized and can be secured to the machine. You can fit the tamper into place and tamp with it attached to the unit, or remove the tamper and apply your tamp by hand.

Brewing

The Barista Express has a 15-bar pump and thermocoil heating system to make brewing and frothing simple. Pre-programmed espresso options allow you to make a single or double shot by simply pressing the corresponding button. You can also override the preset espresso options if you want to customize your drink volume.

Steaming and Frothing

The BES860XL has a commercial-style swivel steam wand that comes with a stainless steel frothing attachment. Use the attachment if you’re going to be frothing a large volume of milk, otherwise the steam wand should be sufficient for everyday use.

Housing and Construction

The Breville Barista Express has a modern brushed stainless steel finish. Button and knob-based controls make this an exceedingly intuitive machine. The pressure gauge, mounted on the front panel, is large and simple to read. Overall the Breville BES860XL is built to be a durable, user-friendly machine.

Included Accessories

This Breville model comes with four filters: a dual-wall single shot filter, a dual-wall double shot filter, a single-wall single shot filter, and a single-wall double shot filter. You’ll also get a tamper, stainless-steel frothing pitcher, and a frothing attachment. In addition, a cleaning kit comes with the machine; it includes: a cleaning tool, coffee scoop, cleaning brush, cleaning disc, cleaning tablets, and an Allen key. The BES860XL has a charcoal water filter to help purify tap water.

If you would like to know a little about the many types of espresso machines we sell, this would be a good video to get you started. This video covers the machines we sell and based on your lifestyle, what you like to drink, and ease of use. It will give you an overview of different espresso machines and help you determine which one best suits to your needs.

I would watch the video and focus on a particular kind of machine—prosumer, semi-automatic, and super-automatic to decide which kind is ideal for you. Then, you can go and look at individual models to get a better idea of exactly what you want. Of course, if you narrow it down to a few espresso machines and are still undecided, give us a call and we would be glad to help!

Fantastic Machine

I bought this2 years ago, completely rookie hime barista. The only con for me is I tend to make a lot of mess with grinds. Great coffee espresso. As a novice, the dual walled filters make this tool very easy to use. The run times are a bit short, like ristretto pulls. I believe this is on purpose so even newbies can pull shots that aren't bitter. Easy to adjust and program if you want to get away for, the semi-auto mode of dual wall. We started looking at Super Auto's but my wife and I think the Super might take something away from the experience. So, we will just get a mouse pad or something to catch the grounds and also to keep the sound down off hitting the portafilter onto the granite tops. Super large water removable water tank. All top access if you have a pot filler mounted behind it. My wife loves the separately purchased Breville knockbox. Padded bar, low noise banging away early in the AM. Great machine, great customer support when I was just starting out. Great help on thenphonemawaits.

Great Machine!

I've had this machine for over a year and can say that I am completely satisfied with it. Makes great espresso, easy to maintain, and gets you involved in the process. I looked at the automatic machines, but my research led me to the Breville and it's "more involved" style. Learning the grind size and amount, how to tamp, and experimenting with shot size are part of the fun.

I have had a lot of different coffee makers full autos to drip and this is the very best maker I have ever head. I was losing my fire to get a cup of coffee like we did in Italy but this one did it. I was so happy I got the for my grains who are true coffee snores and that all agree. It's the best unit for the money end of story.

Solid, quality construction; convenance and appearance with integrated grinder a plus. Toss the dual-wall filters... watch a few youtube videos on using the single-wall filters and you'll be on your way to making great shots. My best results came when I started pre-heating between each pair of shots, and cleaning the single-wall portafilter between each shot pair as well. Another plus: drip tray/water reservoir tuned such that by the time you need to resupply the reservoir, you'll also need to empty the dreg tray. Steaming-wand / frother is a bit slower than I'd like. Like all other Semi-Auto's I've seen/used, this one is just as messy.

Bought this machine more than a year ago to replace my Saecco Aroma SS after 10 years. It works very well indeed, and brews a great shot (Lavazza Pienaroma) once it's set up correctly. Grinder is as good as any, shot temperature ok, maybe a tad low, extract strong and smooth with good crema. Occasionally frothing for a cup or two of cappuccino produces okay foam. I pull 8-10 shots a day, clean it weekly, and had no trouble with it whatsoever. Totally recommend it, but it's not for clean freaks, as with all semi's there is ground all over... :)

I've owned this machine for a couple months and it has not disappointed. This is my first espresso machine and it functions well for both the novice and aspiring expert. I have already graduated to single wall filters and have developed a nice grind and tamp that makes a great espresso. It's been interesting experimenting and this machine allows you to program some of its features once you have them defined. The machine is solidly built and attractive. One of the great things is the built in burr grinder. It's quick, easy has plenty of settings and you don't need another appliance on the counter. But nothing is perfect. Some small issues -- the grinder tends to load the portafilter with ground coffee higher in back which can be messy when it is removed. Also, you need to make sure to warm the cups and the portafilter by pulling an empty shot of hot water, otherwise you get a lukewarm cup of coffee. But I guess this is the case with other machines as well. The warming tray for cups is passive and doesn't really heat up well or enough to truly warm cups until you have pulled more shots than you need. The steam works very well and I frothed milk easily following the directions on the first try. The instructions that come with the machine are good, but they leave out a detail here and there. There is better advice online on the mfg site with videos, PDFs and support which is helpful. Overall, this has been a great machine with plenty of room to grow and learn. I had done quite a bit of research and although I do not have anything to compare it with, I am very pleased with the look, the quality of the build and the fine espresso and other drinks this machine makes. It's a tremendous value.

My wife and I are looking to purchase a latte machine and experiment with making our own lattes. Is this machine a good one to start out with? We like the built in grinder to save some counter space, but are unsure if this machine will allow us to make a good quality latte like the ones we get in any coffee shop other than a chain.

mjackson ♦ Gary,
I do like the idea of more counter space. I also think this is a good machine to be able to make good drinks. You may also want to look at a Gaggia classic with the Latte Art wand and get a separate grinder like the Gaggia MDF. I think it may give you a better all around drink. We do get good reviews on both. I would watch our videos on steaming milk to help. .

I'm looking at buying the Breville Fresca Espresso BES860. Is it that different from the other model? I've also read the steam wand expresses about 1/4 cup water before it begins to steam. Any feedbak please?

mjackson ♦ Joan they make only one machine with that model number. All machines will have some water come out of the steam wand before they steam. Some may have more then others it is something you adjust to by purging the wand of water before you steam. It is a normal thing.

I just checked out the Breville Barista Express in person, and it DOES accept Illy pods. So, you can use it 1) with the built-in grinder, 2) your own ground coffee, and 3) with pods. The pod part would be great for entertaining (less mess, foolproof). I am thinking of buying it because -- if you remove the drip tray -- you can fit a 4.5" latte cup under the spout. I also like its all-metal construction vs. the plastic Gaggia. My only concern: brewing heat. Can it hit 205?

mjackson ♦ Maureen,
Thanks for the comments. The brewer can brew at 200 which is considered optimal. I do think it works well. I don't think you can get it to 205. It certainly is a good machien to consider.

I'm considering the purchase of my first espresso machine, the Barista Express. I've read that it takes less than two minutes to grind and extract once the water is up to proper temperature. My question is this. Being a single boiler machine, how much longer is the process to reheat the boiler and froth milk for a latte?

Michael Rosso ♦ John...Thank you for your interest in the Breville BES860XL Wall. Most Semi Automatic Single Boiler Espresso machines will heat to steam temp in an average time of 15 to 20 seconds.
Thanks.

I'm considering buying the Barista Express because of it's space-saving combination of a grinder and expresso machine.

1. What other semi-automatic espresso machines, if any, also have a built in grinder?

2. If the Barista is run for a minute or so, does it require a cooling off period before it can be run, again and, if so, for how long a cooling off time?

To grind more than a double espresso's quantity of coffee, say, for use in a french press:

3. Does the Barista have a coarse enough grind setting for french press coffee?

4. Can the Barista's grinder be run simply by pressing a finger against the button behind the grinder's portafilter holder without actually using the portafilter itself? (If so, presumably, I could set the quantity button to its maximum and then place a small container under where the ground coffee comes out).

Thanks, in advance, for your help.

mjackson ♦ Robert,

Thanks for all the questions. This really is the only option with a built in grinder. This machine and its grinder are truly set up for espresso. I can not find where anyone has tried it for french press. I would not recommend it based on all I have read. The grinder is made to produce shots not large pots of coffee. The grinder is not designed to run for minutes. I think for what you want to do you may be better served by buying a separate grinder and espresso machine . Say a Gaggia and a burr grinder. Bob give me a call as I think you may be looking at an application with this machine that you will not be happy with. My name is Mark Jackson and my Extension is 5196.

After much research, I am trying to decide between Bteville Barista Express and Gaggia Classic. Several reviews I have read cause me to have some concern about the longevity of the Breville pump. Several reviews about the Gaggia cause me concern about the length and mobility of the frothing wand as many say both are less than adequate if using a 20 oz. frothing pitcher. Finally, i'd like to use pods but it appear that I have to buy a pod basket for the Gaggia as it's not included. Advice?

mjackson ♦ Shelly,

I would go with the Gaggia. I think you will love the machine and it is adequate for steaming milk. You can use up to a 20 oz pitcher at the maximum. It does include a combination pod basket/single shot basket that works well. I think you will be very happy with the machine.
