Features

A unique espresso machine, the Breville BES860XL Barista Express has an integrated conical burr grinder with dosing controls. You’ll be able to grind your beans and dose directly into the coffee filter in under 60 seconds! Created with convenience and flexibility in mind, the Barista Express comes with two double-wall filters (single and double shot) that take the guesswork out of tamping—ideal for beginners. But, if you enjoy the art of making espresso, the BES860XL also has a set of single-wall filters that allow you to apply your own tamp.

This innovative Breville model has a special tamper with a magnetized lock that can be used attached to the machine, if you intend to work with a double-wall filter. You can also detach the tamper if you prefer a manual tamp or are using a single-wall filter. The Barista Express can be programmed to brew a single or double shot and the grinder settings can be adjusted to suit your needs. With a nice mix of semi-automatic and super-automatic features, the Breville BES860XL is a very well-rounded machine.

The see-through bean hopper and conical burrs are detachable for hassle-free maintenance.

Dosing

The BES8360XL has a hands-free portafilter holder; select the filter size (single or double) and put the portafilter in place; the machine will automatically dose the proper amount of coffee. A button, located by the portafilter holder, allows you to push once for an auto dose or push and hold to manually determine the grind amount.

Tamping

A tamper comes included with the BES860XL, it is magnetized and can be secured to the machine. You can fit the tamper into place and tamp with it attached to the unit, or remove the tamper and apply your tamp by hand.

Brewing

The Barista Express has a 15-bar pump and thermocoil heating system to make brewing and frothing simple. Pre-programmed espresso options allow you to make a single or double shot by simply pressing the corresponding button. You can also override the preset espresso options if you want to customize your drink volume.

Steaming and Frothing

The BES860XL has a commercial-style swivel steam wand that comes with a stainless steel frothing attachment. Use the attachment if you’re going to be frothing a large volume of milk, otherwise the steam wand should be sufficient for everyday use.

John Hunsperger I'm considering the purchase of my first espresso machine, the Barista Express. I've read that it takes less than two minutes to grind and extract once the water is up to proper temperature. My question is this. Being a single boiler machine, how much longer is the process to reheat the boiler and froth milk for a latte?

Michael Rosso John...Thank you for your interest in the Breville BES860XL Wall. Most Semi Automatic Single Boiler Espresso machines will heat to steam temp in an average time of 15 to 20 seconds. Thanks.

Robert Brown I'm considering buying the Barista Express because of it's space-saving combination of a grinder and expresso machine. 1. What other semi-automatic espresso machines, if any, also have a built in grinder? 2. If the Barista is run for a minute or so, does it require a cooling off period before it can be run, again and, if so, for how long a cooling off time? To grind more than a double espresso's quantity of coffee, say, for use in a french press: 3. Does the Barista have a coarse enough grind setting for french press coffee? 4. Can the Barista's grinder be run simply by pressing a finger against the button behind the grinder's portafilter holder without actually using the portafilter itself? (If so, presumably, I could set the quantity button to its maximum and then place a small container under where the ground coffee comes out). Thanks, in advance, for your help. Bob Brown 215-990-3877

Mark Jackson Robert, Thanks for all the questions. This really is the only option with a built in grinder. This machine and its grinder are truly set up for espresso. I can not find where anyone has tried it for french press. I would not recommend it based on all I have read. The grinder is made to produce shots not large pots of coffee. The grinder is not designed to run for minutes. I think for what you want to do you may be better served by buying a separate grinder and espresso machine . Say a Gaggia and a burr grinder. Bob give me a call as I think you may be looking at an application with this machine that you will not be happy with. My name is Mark Jackson and my Extension is 5196.

Dab Flanigan I have this machine at my office and am looking for a home machine (I have an old Krups that is no longer working well). I was wondering your thoughts on the machine for the price. I do need to be aware of the machine footprint as I do have a smaller kitchen. I would also be willing to look into fully automatic machines but am fine with semi. Thanks,

Michael Rosso Dab...Thanks for your interest in the Breville BES860XL. I would suggest you look at the Gaggia Brera. It measures 12.4"H x 10"W x 17.5"D and is the smallest Super Automatic. Thanks

shelly manicci After much research, I am trying to decide between Bteville Barista Express and Gaggia Classic. Several reviews I have read cause me to have some concern about the longevity of the Breville pump. Several reviews about the Gaggia cause me concern about the length and mobility of the frothing wand as many say both are less than adequate if using a 20 oz. frothing pitcher. Finally, i'd like to use pods but it appear that I have to buy a pod basket for the Gaggia as it's not included. Advice?

Mark Jackson Shelly, I would go with the Gaggia. I think you will love the machine and it is adequate for steaming milk. You can use up to a 20 oz pitcher at the maximum. It does include a combination pod basket/single shot basket that works well. I think you will be very happy with the machine.

Tami Piatnik what is the overall height of the machine?
12:48 AM 5-4-11
Michael Rosso Tami...Thank you for your interest in the Breville BES860XL. The measurements are 14.5"Hx12.6"Wx12.6"D. Thanks.

Linda Pullara where is it made? How many watts? besides grinding the beans can it use espresso pods?
8:24 AM 10-6-10
Mark Jackson Linda, It is made in China. It runs at 1500 watts is the best information I can find. People really seem to like its price versus value and are happy with the purchase. It can not do pods.

If you would like to know a little about the many types of espresso machines we sell, this would be a good video to get you started. This video covers the machines we sell and based on your lifestyle, what you like to drink, and ease of use. It will give you an overview of different espresso machines and help you determine which one best suits to your needs.

I would watch the video and focus on a particular kind of machine—prosumer, semi-automatic, and super-automatic to decide which kind is ideal for you. Then, you can go and look at individual models to get a better idea of exactly what you want. Of course, if you narrow it down to a few espresso machines and are still undecided, give us a call and we would be glad to help!

Bought this machine more than a year ago to replace my Saecco Aroma SS after 10 years. It works very well indeed, and brews a great shot (Lavazza Pienaroma) once it's set up correctly. Grinder is as good as any, shot temperature ok, maybe a tad low, extract strong and smooth with good crema. Occasionally frothing for a cup or two of cappuccino produces okay foam. I pull 8-10 shots a day, clean it weekly, and had no trouble with it whatsoever. Totally recommend it, but it's not for clean freaks, as with all semi's there is ground all over... :)

I've owned this machine for a couple months and it has not disappointed. This is my first espresso machine and it functions well for both the novice and aspiring expert. I have already graduated to single wall filters and have developed a nice grind and tamp that makes a great espresso. It's been interesting experimenting and this machine allows you to program some of its features once you have them defined. The machine is solidly built and attractive. One of the great things is the built in burr grinder. It's quick, easy has plenty of settings and you don't need another appliance on the counter. But nothing is perfect. Some small issues -- the grinder tends to load the portafilter with ground coffee higher in back which can be messy when it is removed. Also, you need to make sure to warm the cups and the portafilter by pulling an empty shot of hot water, otherwise you get a lukewarm cup of coffee. But I guess this is the case with other machines as well. The warming tray for cups is passive and doesn't really heat up well or enough to truly warm cups until you have pulled more shots than you need. The steam works very well and I frothed milk easily following the directions on the first try. The instructions that come with the machine are good, but they leave out a detail here and there. There is better advice online on the mfg site with videos, PDFs and support which is helpful. Overall, this has been a great machine with plenty of room to grow and learn. I had done quite a bit of research and although I do not have anything to compare it with, I am very pleased with the look, the quality of the build and the fine espresso and other drinks this machine makes. It's a tremendous value.
