What makes the Breville BCG800XL Smart Grinder so smart? Its intuitive functionality, for starters. When you adjust the grind setting, the BCG800XL will automatically change the grinding duration, using Dosing IQ Technology, to ensure that you get the proper coffee volume. With stainless steel conical burrs, 25 grind settings and the ability to program the machine to grind up to 12 cups of coffee or 8 shots of espresso, you’re sure to get the desired results.
This compact grinder measures 15.5”H x 8.25”W x 6”D, so it won’t take up too much kitchen counter space. To guarantee that you’re ready to grind from day one, the Breville BCG800XL Smart Grinder comes with a small and a large portafilter cradle as well as a conical-burr cleaning brush.
Press and release the start button to activate the auto-stop feature and allow for hands-free operation. If you prefer to manually control the grinding cycle, simply press and hold the start button until you have the desired grind volume. Releasing the start button will end the grind cycle.
Grind for French press, drip and filter coffee or espresso. The Breville BCG800XL Smart Grinder has 25 grind fineness settings to choose from, so it’s only a matter of finding the appropriate range for your needs. You can even select the number of cups or shots the grinder produces using the “Amount” button located on the front panel of the machine.
The finer the grind, the longer it will take the grinder to produce the coffee volume selected. The Breville Smart Grinder’s IQ technology will adjust the grind cycle to compensate for the difference between fine and coarse grinds and ensure that you get the appropriate amount of coffee.
The BCG800XL has durable stainless-steel conical burrs to minimize heat transfer and deliver uniform grinds.
The Smart Grinder comes with small and large portafilter holders. The small holder can accommodate portafilters from 50-54mm in diameter. The large holder is compatible with 58mm portafilters.
The grounds container comes with a utilitarian lid. You can leave the lid on and grind directly into the container for mess-free operation. The lid has a cap that can be opened or closed; leave it open when you’re grinding and close it to store and preserve your coffee grounds. In addition, the Smart Grinder has a dedicated bean hopper comes, which comes with a heavy-duty lid to allow you to safely store your beans.

I researched a burr grinder, not satisfied with a blade grinder because of uneven grinding and the risk for burning the beans from the heat of the blades. I didn't want to spend a small fortune on a machine but I also didn't want a piece of garbage that would give me trouble. I liked Breville's socially responsibility statement and as far as I could tell, it is manufactured in our country. I have had it over a year and must say that it is excellent on all counts. I use it primarily for French press. Cleaning it with Grindz tablets is a must. I once got a bean stuck but the ease of disassembly permitted easy removal of the obstruction. I have been pleased and feel I got what I paid for! It's so gratifying when that happens. Whole Latte Love is an easy website to use and when I had a question prior to the purchase the customer service representative was professional and friendly.

I've had a chance to use this grinder for about 2 weeks now with my new Gaggia Classic espresso machine that I bought shortly before buying this grinder. I am very pleased with the performance and features of the Breville Smart Grinder. Seems like they thought of everything! I am currently using some Peet's "Espresso Forte" whole beans that I buy at the local Peet's Coffee and Tea shop. With the Breville grinder set on the coarser side of center in the espresso grind range, I've experimented and gotten some 30+ second pulls. The sweet spot is on the forth or fifth mark from the left in the espresso grind range with this grinder when used with my Gaggia Classic. The "More or Less" selection helps tweak the pull times. The creama is amazing. I am really enjoying the cappuccinos I'm drinking now! I can't foresee any problems with my grinder getting the beans ground fine enough for any espresso maker. I am using this grinder only for espresso, so I can't comment on grinding for drip or french press. When I first was using the 58mm portafilter from my Gaggia Classic, it didn't seem to fit that well in the 58mm portafilter holder of the Breville - but I wasn't doing it right. You have to hold the handle of the portafilter to the left so that the two locking tangs of the portafilter are resting on each side of the portafilter holder in the grinder. Held like this, it fits perfectly! If you push the portafilter in, it turns the grinder's display on, push a little more, and it grinds out your dose. Alternatively, you can press the button below the right side of the display to do the same thing. Generally I don't get much spillage, but any grinds that do spill land in the removable tray under the portafilter holder. After grinding, simply pull out the tray and dump any extra grounds into the portafilter. The tray is very easy to remove, and is held in place by a small magnet. Dosing seems very consistent [caveat: I have not weighed any of the doses to scientifically verify consistency, as I don't have a suitable scale]. I've had the grinder stop grinding twice in the 2-week period that I've had it (a little over 2 lbs. of whole beans have gone through the grinder). When this happened, I could hear the motor running faster than normal. To clear the grinder, I just had to remove the bean hopper and the top burr (both very easy to do), then turn the grinder upside-down to shake out any loose bean or two, and use the included brush to clean the grounds from the burr area. Re-assembled and it was good to go. I had originally ordered the Gaggia MDF grinder to pair with my Gaggia Classic, but after reading a number of reviews, I had a change of heart before my order shipped. Thankfully WLL was able to change my order before shipping, and I got the Breville. I am very happy that this is the grinder that I bought. The price to feature ratio couldn't be better!

Easy to use and consistent.
When dosing directly into the portafilter, hold the portafilter handle so that the two metal locking tangs are facing each side, left and right, and resting on the plastic sides of the grinder's portafilter holder.

Simple to figure out and use. I measure the beans going in and out by volume, or weight when things are slower paced, but the grind is easy to dial in for what works best in the Gaggia. Once it's dialed in, it grinds consistently. By the way, I found Breville stands behind their products and their customer support was great when I had small, intermittent problem using the hopper.

Both the machine features and Breville's customer support
If you do a deep cleaning on the burr assembly be sure not to lose or drop the washer that's under the grindshaft locknut.

Commercially and home roasted whole bean coffees from around the world.
A little more power and a little re-engineering of the "shear gear."
This grinder replaced a Saeco Titan that couldn't grind finely or consistently enough for espresso.
Great machine! Consistent grind for a consistent espresso every time. I usually grind straight into the portafilter and Love the adjustment to fine tune the quantity. However I wish it didn't say stronger or weaker on the dial. My son's pride won't let them put weaker so they usually end up over filling the portafilter. I've been using it for over 6 months and have never had a problem with the beans not dropping into the grinder. Great Bang for the Buck. Highly recommend.
love this machine!!!! Very easy to use!
Recently purchased the Breville Smart Grinder and have been very pleased thus far. This grinder looks good and does not take up much space on the counter. It is VERY easy to operate and to adjust to your grind preference. The directions are adequate and it only took a few tries to reach a grind consistency that worked well with my espresso machine. I also like that it is not too noisy and there is NO mess. I have been grinding into the grinds container rather than the portafilter as it seals nicely to maintain freshness for a day or so. This same grinder was available at a nearby Williams-Sonoma, but I have been pleased with previous purchases at WLL and like the perk of no sales tax!

mjackson ♦ The Baratza in my opinion is better suited for espresso.I Like the Breville more for drip coffee. I think the range of fine grind will be more repeatable with the Baratza.
I like a dark french roast for morning drip and espresso for afternoon and evening. Will the Brevill BCG800XL likely be OK with both? I'm mainly concerned about having to clean the burrs frequently due to the more oily dark roast which according to some reviewers claim clog them.

mjackson ♦ With any grinder the darker the bean the more cleaning. With this grinder it is a good grinder but may struggle with a really dark bean for espresso. It will help if you clean it often to make it work more reliably. You may want to go a little better if you are going to use a really dark espresso, perhaps look at the Rancilio Rocky.
I just tried my BCG800XL for the first time -- total failure. The beans are dropping down out of the hopper into the grinding area, and it makes grinding noises, but no grounds are coming out. I've followed the instructions several times for taking it apart and trying to dislodge a blockage, but no luck. Any other suggestions before I send it back?

Sanfam ♦ Unfortunately, our Technical Support team won't be able to offer much help with this particular model, as it is supported directly through Breville. Their technical support department is quite friendly. More information about how to contact them can be found at http://www.brevilleusa.com/support .
I recently purchased a Gaggia Baby Class from you and want to know if the Breville BCG800XL Smart Grinder will be sufficient enough for my machine.

Michael Rosso ♦ Michael...Thank you for this question you posted on our Super Wall. The Breville BCG800XL Smart Grinder would work very well with your Gaggia Baby Class. Thanks.
Since I want to use the grinder for both morning drip and evening espresso. So it seems like I would want to bean hoppers. Can I buy an extra hopper?

mjackson ♦ Claudia,
Unfortunately that is a part we do not stock. You may be able to get one from Breville. It may be easier to empty or switch the beans easier then switching hoppers as I don't think the hopper is designed to sit very stable outside of the grinder.
I've read that Breville rereleased these grinders with shim kit updates that allow for a better espresso grind. It is said that these grinders with a product number ending in a number 27 or above are the newer version. Are the ones being sold on your site the original or released version? (Is it possible to check the product number?)
Thank you!

I have a Gaggia 11300 Baby D espresso machine. Will this grinder get the grounds fine enough to use with the commercial portafilter on the espresso machine? We have used a Gaggia MM grinder for 19 years and it is finally giving up the ghost. Thanks!!

Michael Rosso ♦ Bill...Thank you for your interest in the Breville BCG800XL Smart Grinder. What a impressive life span for your Gaggia MM. The Breville BCG800XL Smart Grinder will get the grinds fine enough to be a good matchup with your Gaggia Baby D. If you have more questions please feel free to post them on our Super Wall, or contact us directly at 1-888-411-5282 option 1. Thanks.
mjackson ♦ Michael,
It is made in China. It is a great grinder.
So far I only brew drip coffee from my 14-cup Cuisinart coffee maker. I want to upgrade from a blade grinder to a conical burr grinder. I have been looking at the Breville BCG800XL and the Baratza Virtuoso. Since reviews are so inconsistent, I would like your opinion.

Zack Smith Phyllis, Both machine will do a good job at giving you a consistent grind. One of the nice things about both grinders is that if you ever decided to purchase an espresso machine both will be able to produce a good espresso grind. The Virtuoso has been out longer than the Breville but from the feedback that we do get from customers I would say that both grinders would be a solid choice.
