Unquestionably one of the best super-automatic espresso machines on the market, the Jura Capresso Impressa F7 was designed to brew perfect cappuccinos and café lattes with ease. With its ability to grind, dose, tamp and brew automatically, the Impressa F7 eliminates the hassles normally associated with brewing fresh espresso. And with features like a bypass doser, removable water reservoir and a stainless-steel dual frother, the Impressa F7 delivers delicious coffeehouse-style drinks every time - an epicurean’s dream!
Getting Familiar
All the Jura F7s control buttons are directly under the LED display at the top of the front panel.
From left to right, you see the on/off button, the P (programming) button, the 1-cup brewing button, the 2-cup brewing button, the rinse button (pictured with water droplets), and the steam button. Framing these buttons is the liquid volume selection dial on the left, and the steam/water selector, which simply toggles between brewing and steaming functions, on the right. Save the grind fineness knob that sits in the bean hopper, these front-panel buttons and knobs control everything in the F7s repertoire.
The 1-cup button (which provides mild, normal, and strong drink options) and the 2-cup button (which doubles the ground coffee dosage and liquid volume of your drink) commence the brewing process. Similarly, the rinse and steaming buttons simply begin the processes they denote. But the P button acts as your direct link to the menu options that are easily navigable using the liquid volume selection knob. This menu allows you to choose from 7 display languages, indicate your water hardness level, and select between standard and robust aroma levels. In addition to this, the Capresso F7 can be programmed to turn on at a specific time, so your machine will be heated and ready to go as soon as you are, and automatically shut off after a desired length of time. When not in programming mode, the menu navigation dial is also used to select the amount of coffee, hot water, or steam that will be dispensed.

Getting Ready
The first thing you have to do when you pull the machine out of the box is fill the water reservoir and the bean hopper.
Then you will prime the machine (a thirty second process that is well detailed in the user manual) and finally, run a rinse cycle. After this, youre ready to brew for the first time, but it is recommended that you also program your water settings before brewing. The choice you have to make here is whether or not youll be using the included Clearyl Water Filtration System. If you will be, youll need to insert your first filter into the holder in the reservoir and, through the P button menu, turn the filter option on. If you wont be using this option, you will use the included water hardness test strip to test the water youll be putting into the machine and enter the results in the hardness portion of the P button menu. Programming these options will make it possible for the machine to appropriately notify you when either the filter needs to be replaced or when the machine needs to be decalcified.

Making Your Drink
The decision of what drink youll be making will basically determine the brewing settings youll want to use.
Cappuccinos, lattes, and americanos all have the same starting point: a shot of espresso. A standard double shot is usually 2 to 2.5 oz, so youll start the brewing process by turning the liquid volume selection knob the appropriate amount (as the knob is turned, the liquid volume options appear on the LED display in ½ oz increments from 1 to 8 oz.) On the other hand, if youre brewing a café crema, youll want to set the liquid volume to a higher selection, usually between 6 and 8 oz. This difference in water volume should also be your clue to adjust your grind setting. For a higher volume of water, you want to use a higher grind setting and vice versa. Obviously, this is only applicable if youre going to brew using whole beans that are in the hopper. If youre using preground coffee, simply add it to the bypass doser after making your liquid volume selection. Opening the bypass lid indicates to the machine that you will be brewing this way. No matter if youre using whole beans or preground, the final step in the brewing process is to press either the 1 or 2-cup button, keeping in mind that the 2-cup button will double the amount of liquid volume and ground coffee you previously selected. If you press the 1-cup button once, the F7 will automatically produces a mild strength brew. Pressing twice will result in normal strength, and three times produces a strong drink.

Topping it Off: Frothing & Steaming
Controlling the hot water and steaming functions is the steam/water selection knob.
For hot water, simply turn the knob clockwise when the machine is at brewing temperature. If you would like to steam and froth milk for a cappuccino or latte, press the steam button and in 15 seconds, the machine will indicate that it is heated to the proper temperature with a message on the display screen. Turn the steaming knob clockwise and the dual position frothing wand will begin to steam your milk, if the wand is in the up position, or froth it, if the wand is down. When youre done steaming, it is recommended that you direct the steam wand toward the drip tray and reopen the steam wand for a second. This will release a bit of steam that will clear out any milk residue that may be inside the wand.

Shut Down
Since the F7 can be programmed to shut down automatically (between ½ hour and 9 hours), shutting down can be as simple as walking away from the machine.
However, you can also turn off the machine manually by pressing the on/off button. No matter how the F7 is shut down, it will run an automatic rinse cycle before completely powering off.

A Word About Care and Maintenance
Because of the rinse cycles at start up and shut down, the drip tray of the F7 does need to be emptied rather frequently.
When you remove the drip tray for disposal, the dump box also comes out of the machine, so its quick and easy to dispose of the spent grounds as well. Two things to keep in mind about this though: the machine will indicate that the dump box needs to be emptied after a certain amount of cups have been brewed regardless of whether or not it is physically empty, and the dump box must be removed and replaced while the machine is on in order for this notification to be removed from the screen. In addition to emptying the drip tray and dump box, you will also need to clean off your steam wand. It was mentioned in a previous section that you should release some extra steam to clean out the inside of the wand, but you should wipe the outside of the wand with a damp cloth after every use as well.
There is also some periodic maintenance that needs to be completed for the F7 to keep functioning properly and brewing great tasting drinks. Whenever the machine needs to have a cleaning cycle or decalcification cycle run, it will display a message on the LED screen alerting you to do so. These processes basically involve adding the appropriate product to the machine (Jura Cleaning tabs for the cleaning cycle or Durgol for decalcification) and following the directions on the LED screen. However, if you are using and have properly installed a Clearyl Water Filter, you will never receive a decalcification message, but rather, an indication to change the filter.
