Introducing the Jura Capresso Z5 the first super automatic espresso machine on the market to turn the process of making a cappuccino into a just press one button affair. The Z5s Dual Nozzle System now makes it possible for you to brew an entire cappuccino or latte from start to finish without ever moving your cup. Just press either the dedicated cappuccino button and the Impressa Z5 will start frothing and/or steaming your milk, grinding, tamping, and brewing. When the cycle is complete, theres nothing left to do but start sipping your tasty drink.
For each of the Z5s brewing buttons, you can program the strength, temperature, and size of your drink, and using the rotating dial on the top of the machine, override any programmed settings at will. When youre using the cappuccino button, you can even program the amount of milk that is removed from the external 32oz thermal milk container, frothed, steamed, and added to your drink. This allows you to make any drink in the espresso spectrum at the touch of a button, from cappuccino to macchiato and everything in between.
Behind its brushed metal front sits a specially insulated burr grinder that makes the Jura Z5 quieter than any other super automatic espresso machine on the market. If you have a craving for something a little different than the coffee thats already in the bean hopper, just add some preground coffee to the bypass doser and continue to enjoy the same level of drink customization that you do when youre brewing beans ground internally.
To walk you through each step of the process, the Z5 features a red-on-black digital display. Not only does this display make it easy to see exactly what youre brewing, but also provides messages indicating to empty the dump box, refill the 96oz. removable water reservoir, add more beans to the 10oz. capacity hopper, and run cleaning cycles. The Z5 also features the Clearyl Water Filtration System to remove calcium and chlorine (among other things) from your water supply and, when used properly, to eliminate the need for decalcification.

Facing the machine, youll see 8 buttons surrounding the digital display 4 on the left and 4 on the right. From the left, you have a milk frothing/steaming button (if you solely want steamed or frothed milk), the cappuccino button (which makes a cappuccino from start to finish), the special coffee button (if you solely want coffee), and the hot water button. When pressed, the first 3 buttons listed will dispense their related product from the dual spout nozzle on the left of the machine. This nozzle comes with two separate attachments (a long one that accommodates short cups, and a short one that accommodates taller cups) and has a dial with three positions: frothing (for cappuccino), steaming (for latte), and cleaning. The hot water button will cause water to be dispensed from the dedicated hot water wand that is located on the right side of the center-mounted espresso dispensing area. |
On the right side of the display (from left to right) are the 1-cup espresso, 2-cup espresso, 1-cup coffee, and 2-cup coffee buttons. Pressing any of these 4 buttons will cause espresso to be dispensed from the center-mounted espresso dispensing area. All 8 buttons are programmable for liquid volume, but the process for programming them is different. To program the right buttons, the special coffee button, and the hot water button, you hold down the button youd like to program until an Enough? message appears on the digital display. When the machine has dispensed the desired amount, press the button youre programming again. Every consecutive time you press this button, it will dispense this programmed amount of liquid. |
To program the cappuccino and steaming/frothing buttons, you will need to access the programming menu. This menu is accessed by pressing the button in the center of the rotary dial on the top of the machine. Youll know youve entered the menu when the word Filter appears on the screen, and youll simply need to continue turning the rotary dial until you get to the line item for the button youre programming either Milk or Cappuccino. For the milk button, you will turn the rotary dial to select the length of time (in seconds) that you would like steamed or frothed milk to be dispensed. The Cappuccino button has the ability to be programmed for how long you want milk to be dispensed (in seconds) and how much coffee youd like to be dispensed (in ounces). |
Each of the coffee brewing buttons can also be programmed for temperature and strength. These options are accessed through the rotary dial menu the same way as explained above. As an added feature, you can always override the programmed strength and liquid volume settings by either turning the dial either before brewing (to change strength) or during grinding (to change liquid volume). If you do alter these settings, the brewing button you used will revert to its programmed settings after the brewing cycle is complete. |
In addition to programming options for the brewing buttons, the rotary dial menu is also used to activate the Clearyl filter, run cleaning cycles, and program the time, both auto-on and auto-off functions, and the display names for each of the brewing buttons a nifty feature for multi-user households. You can also view the number of cups that have been brewed and the number of cleaning cycles that have been run, as well as changing the display to appear in milliliters rather than ounces. To the right of the rotary dial is the rinse button and on the left side is an on/off button. Please note that this on/off button is not the main power switch this rocker switch is located on the bottom left side of the machine. |
As for the structural elements of the machine, the first thing youll notice is the Z5s wavy, brushed metal front panel. When you slide the drip tray out, the dump box (cleverly disguised as the bottom portion of this front panel) slides out as well. Also fairly well hidden are the bean hopper and bypass doser, which are located under a large lid on the top of the machine. The left side of the machine houses the removable reservoir, which is black tinted to match the top and sides of the Z5. |

You can either fill it in place or remove it from the machine to fill it under the faucet. Secondly, youll need to fill the bean hopper with beans and follow the manufacturers instructions for adjusting the grind setting based on the darkness of the beans youre using. Then press the on/off button. If its the first time youve used the machine, the Z5s display will walk you through setting the display language and time upon start up. After youve taken care of this, or for each subsequent use, the machine will prompt you to run a rinse cycle using the rinse button located to the right of the rotary dial. Then the unit will begin to heat. |
After this initial set up process, youll need to take care of a few other things before you start brewing. If you will be using the Clearyl Water Filtration System, youll need to install and activate your first filter. If youve decided not to use the filtration system, youll need to program your waters hardness level (which you can determine using the included water hardness test strip) into the machine. Both of these procedures are completed through the rotary dial menu. |

If youre going to be brewing a one-touch cappuccino or latte, youll want to start by filling the 32oz. thermal milk container that is provided with the Z5. After placing the lid on this container, youll need to insert the metal end of the milk siphoning tube into the lid and connect the other end to the dual spout cappuccino nozzle. Depending on what type of drink youre making, you may need to change the dial that sits on the front of the dual spout nozzle. For cappuccinos, make sure the dial is in the upright position, pointing to the cappuccino icon. For lattes, the dial should be turned to the left to the center latte icon. Once youve made this selection, simply press the cappuccino button on the control panel. First, frothed or steamed milk will be dispensed from the front nozzle while the machine begins to grind beans. Using the rotary dial, you can adjust the amount of milk that is dispensed during this time. After the machine is done dispensing milk, the rear dispensing nozzle will begin releasing hot, freshly brewed espresso. During this time, you can use the rotary dial to adjust the amount of coffee that is being dispensed if you choose. If you do turn the rotary dial to change the amounts of milk and coffee, these new settings will not be saved the button will revert back to its programmed settings after the cycle is complete. |
When brewing a simple shot of espresso or a cup of café crème, you will simply press the appropriate brewing button. If you choose to brew with one of the 4 buttons on the right side of the digital display, your brew will be dispensed from the center dispensing area. You can also brew using the special coffee button on the left side of the display, which will dispense its brew from the left side cappuccino nozzle. Before brewing with any of these buttons, you can adjust the strength of your brew using the rotary dial. During the brewing process, you can use this dial to change the liquid volume that is dispensed. But, as before, after brewing is over the button will revert to its original programmed settings, regardless of the changes youve made. |
To do so, you will leave the thermal milk container attached as before, turn the cappuccino dial to either the cappuccino setting (for frothed milk) or the latte setting (for steamed milk), and simply press the steaming/frothing button on the left side of the display panel. And, as you could during the brewing processes, you can alter the amount of milk that is dispensed by turning the rotary dial during the frothing or steaming process. Capresso also suggests using this feature to steam chocolate milk for delicious hot chocolate. |

With the Z5s auto-off option, you can program the machine to turn off automatically up to 5 hours after its last use, so you never have to worry about leaving the machine on unattended. |

Whenever a maintenance procedure needs to be completed, the Z5 will let you know with a message on its display. On a day-to-day basis, youll need to empty the drip tray and dump box as the machine indicates. As a general rule, you should always empty the dump box when you remove the drip tray. This is because that when the dump box is removed, it clears the machines internal count of how many pucks of spent grounds have been dispensed into the container. Not emptying it at this time could cause some serious problems with overflow. |
Another day-to-day cleaning procedure is rinsing the cappuccino nozzle system. 10 minutes after you use the cappuccino feature, the machine will also instruct you to run a cleaning cycle through the cappuccino nozzle system. And all you need to do to complete this is turn the frothing dial to the cleaning position, place a cup under the dual nozzles, and press the rinse button. |
The Z5 will also tell you when to run cleaning cycles, which again is as easy as following the directions on the screen and pressing the buttons it tells you to. If youre using the Clearyl Water Filtration System, the Z5 will also let you know when its time to change the filter. If youve opted not to use the filter, the machine will instead indicate that a decalcification cycle needs to be run. |
