I only wish it was a bit quieter. But since my coffee maker is programmable, no one really minds the noise of the grinder in the evening, unless something good is on TV.
blade-style grinders
Is this grinder truly incapable of grinding fine enough for espresso? My wife purchased one from an online discount retailer who will not accept returns once the item was used. I have had to drastically overfill the portafilter on my Gaggia Color and tamp with nearly my body weight to reach twenty seconds of brew time. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks for the response. I thought I may have got a lemon, but it appears it was only wishful thinking!
If I just using the grinder for drip coffee would this be a good grinder? Additionally, would you be able to recommend a combination package that includes a coffee maker and grinder for 300 to 400 dollars?

Can you tell me if this burr grinder (or possibly another) would be good for my needs? I'm looking for a quality product and something that won't break the bank. I primarily use a Technivorm Moccamaster and occasionally a french press. I prefer rather dark and oily beans as well (I've heard these can be problematic with some grinders).

MikeR This really kind of depends on what you're grinding for. If you're grinding for a drip coffee maker, the Cuisinart is a fine grinder, that will improve the flavor, as it isn't burning your beans as a blade grinder does. If you're grinding for any espresso machine, pressurized or non-pressurized, the two best grinders we have tested that have a good range of uses are the Capresso Infinity and the Baratza Virtuoso. Now the Virtuoso is a bit higher than your target, but with it's metal housing and harder burr set, it really is worth the extra few dollars.
But those would be my two suggestions for anything other than drip.
I've been using a Solis Maestro for 7-1/2 years - bought it from WLL. I've never been able to get it to grind as finely as I'd like - shots run out too fast even with a firm tamp. And for many of the beans I use (home-roasted Sweetmarias.com) I have to use a soda stray to encourage them to get into the burrs. Now it's started gumming up below the burrs. I can probably take it out to the garage and get it cleaned out using compressed air, but maybe it's time for a new grinder. How, in your opinion, does the Cuisinart CBM-18 compare to the Maestro for durability, ease of use, and fineness of grind?

BaristaCorner Hello Ken...Unfortunately, you are not going to get the fine grind that you are looking for in the espresso range using the Maestro or the Cuisinart CBM-18. To get to the grind that you are looking for you should review either the Gaggia MDF or the Rancilio Rocky grinders. Let me know if I can help you with further questions. Thank you, Eric Black

ToddS There is really no comparison in quality between the grinders. The Gaggia MDF will grind fine enough or coarse enough for any coffee you will want to brew. The Gaggia is a low speed grinder, has commercial quality burrs and will last for a very long time. Also the Gaggia is a dosing grinder that is designed to dispense coffee directly into a portafilter from an espresso machine. The Cuisinart has a removable ground coffee container and is high speed grinder that will not grind fine enough for a machine with a commercial portafilter. If you are using it for drip coffee then the Cuisinart is fine. If you are looking for a top quality heavy duty grinder then the MDF is a great choice. If you want to talk to a sales person on this it would probably help. We really have to know more about how you want to use the grinder before we can let you know what is best for you.
Will the grind be fine enough for a Gaggia Classic espresso machine? I have the model under this one and it will not grind fine enough.

BaristaCorner Jim, Take a look at the Baratza Maestro Plus or the Baratza Virtuoso. The Virtuoso is definitely worth the extra money. The Gaggia MDF is another option as well.

This grinder does a good job for things like drip coffee and French Press. It cannot grind fine enough nor consistent enough to really make a quality espresso.
