Robyn Schaiff Sometimes I make a very nice single shot espresso but when I try to make a second one, no coffee/liquid will come through the filter. I have tamped the coffee exactly the same as the first time, but no coffee!! If I put the filter on without coffee in it, still no water will go through. If I let it dry for hours/days, it will usually work the next time. As the manual suggested, I took the filter apart and cleaned it and reassembled and the problem keeps happening sporadically. It is very unpredictable and doesn't happen every time. It is causing me to waste lots of coffee and get very frustrated. Advice for the newbie??

Mark Jackson Robyn, The only solution I have heard of is to try running steam out of the machine before brewing a 2nd shot.

katie sommer Hello! Does anyone know why water would stay pooled in my portafilter after I've pulled a shot? It just drips and drips; the puck is never anything remotely close to dry. In fact, it's pretty much pure liquid. I've cleaned and descaled everything I can think of, to no avail. This is my first question to you guys, so sorry if it's been asked before. If so, I can't find the answer. Thank you. Katie

katie sommer Mark, thank you so much for the suggestions and feedback. I have a lot to learn because it seems counter intuitive to me to use *more* coffee at a *finer* grind to get a dryer puck. But I'll totally try it (I'll try anything)! One question--when you say 25 seconds, do you mean before the espresso comes out, or when the espresso is coming out? Thank you so much again. This is an awesome resource to ask appliance-specific questions.

Mark Jackson Katie, I don't think the cleaning is the problem. I do think it could be how much coffee you put in the filter, you may not have enough. It most likely is your grind it could be to coarse. The machine will work well. Try more coffee and a finer grind. Try and time your shot and see if is coming out to fast. It should take about 25 seconds. Also you may want to weigh your coffee and see how much coffee you are using. For a double shot I would suggest about 16 grams. I hope this helps and keep trying it should all come together with some experimentation.

Brian Hubbard I'm trying to replicate the Starbucks Chai Latte for my wife, she loves them. I have the concentrate from starbucks, but I'm at a loss on how to prepare the milk. I think I have to use the frothing cup, but I'm not really sure. How can I use this machine to make Chai Latte's? I'm pretty sure I have to steam the milk, but that is the extent of my knowledge. Do I really need this machine to just make Chai Latte's? Is there another way to steam milk without buying an espresso machine?

Michael Rosso Brain...You can use either the Nespresso Aero or the Nespresso Aeroccino to froth and steam your milk. Thanks and happy brewing.

elaine bryant I purchased this pump driven espresso/cappuccino make for my daughter for Christmas and it did not come with the coffee pod tool. Is it possible to purchase one and can it be used with this machine? I have one and use it all the time. Thanks, Elaine

WholeLatteLoveS S Did your machine come with two filter holders? If so the larger is for a double shot, the smaller is for a single shot and pods. If you do not have the smaller basket, you can call Delonghi for a replacement, as we do not carry Delonghi parts. You can call them at 800-322-3848

If you would like to know a little about the many types of espresso machines we sell, this would be a good video to get you started. This video covers the machines we sell and based on your lifestyle, what you like to drink, and ease of use. It will give you an overview of different espresso machines and help you determine which one best suits to your needs.

I would watch the video and focus on a particular kind of machine—prosumer, semi-automatic, and super-automatic to decide which kind is ideal for you. Then, you can go and look at individual models to get a better idea of exactly what you want. Of course, if you narrow it down to a few espresso machines and are still undecided, give us a call and we would be glad to help!

***see below. Simply put I see this as a great stepping stone machine. The price is perfect (if I were to buy one now as I received this as a gift). If you like espresso..I would recommend skipping the steam-driven and going with a machine like this. I have only made doubles. Usually I will make two before work and the speed of heating the boiler is excellent (having caused a small explosion with my old steam-driven one- i was wary when I removed the portafilter to make the 2nd double the first time i used the machine). I have read reviews criticizing the machine's ability to make a double...and I cannot comment on this. I can say that the quality is far better than steam-driven espresso and moka-style espresso. I have also read where the steamer is poor too...but as a simple straight espresso drinker again I cannot comment. Advice: I also have read where people do not like the rattling of the tank when the pump is working. I simply lift the lid of the tank during this process and the sound is greatly reduced. ***A brief background to put my review in perspective. I received this as a birthday gift...asking for a real espresso machine. I had a steam-driven machine that was getting old. When i received this gift, my dad had also bought a tamper...which to be honest I had no idea espresso was tamped.....so in sum I am a newbie to espresso...even though I have loved espresso for some time.

After 4 years of daily use, my Bar32 finally died. It made gurgling sounds and the water leaked down thru the machine instead of coming out where it's supposed to. I wanted to do surgery on it to see if I could fix it, but alas DeLonghi doesn't want us working on their machines because they put them together with weird screws.

Well built, and stylish machine for $150, but unfortunately the espresso is not hot enough. It might be okay for some (140), but I like my quad latte at 160+, and since I am using a shot of room temperature flavor, and 1/2 (nonfat) milk, even if I heat the milk to 170, I still end up with 140 degree latte that is luke warm about halfway to work. This is my only gripe after using the machine for a couple weeks.

How Long Have I Been Using This Product?

Less than 1 month

What's Best About this Product?

Ease of use, and excellent construction/style for a $150 machine.

Some Helpful Tips For Using this Product:

Read the section here about achieving the 20-25 second pull, it works, and remember this machine uses a "light tamp" because it has the idiot-proof filter. I find that this machine cannot pull water in less than 20 seconds, and I actually prefer a 30 second shot the best, and setting of 4 on caprese burr grinder gives that, and thick crema.

My Experience With Using This Product:

Coffee Lover

The Coffee I've Tried With This Product:

Starbucks Itallian Roast

Some Improvements I Would Recommend for This Product:

The temperature of the brewed espresso in (pre-warmed) cup is too low (140), even after pulling blank shots first. They should be in the range 160 - 164.

Krups FND111

After my X3 broke, it so happens that I had to buy a replacement in a hurry and this is all my local store had. I had vouched to never buy a Delonghi again after my old Delonghi broke right after the warranty expired. Well, after the X3, it is very hard to get used to this machine. The portafilter is very, very light, small, plasticky and worse of all, there is no way to knock the grounds out of it. I've tried everything and the only way to clean it is under running water and that means used coffee grounds into the drain. Also, if you need to make couple of espresso shots, you better buy several filter cups. In terms of espresso, for some reason it makes a weaker shot than my X3 and I've tried using Illy, Lavazza in Blu and Lavazza Qualita Rossa. The Qualita Rossa in my experience works best with this machine, I get somewhat a decent cup of espresso. It seems that the Lavazza in blu is too finely grounded to work with this filter and because of the filter size, I haven't been able to find a better quality replacement.

How often should I descale my machine and what should I use? click to open/closeopen and close answer
  • DeLonghi recommends using Durgol, and you should descale/decalcify about once every 3 months depending on your water quality. Some DeLonghi machines even have built-in message systems to notify you when it is time to descale. You can purchase Durgol by following the links below. Durgol Express is ideal for coffee makers, and Durgol Swiss Espresso is recommended for espresso machines.
