DeLonghi EC155
Hi, we just bought our machine a week ago and have yet to have it make great espresso. The machine appears to run thru the coffe so fast the end product is something more like weak coffee to light tea. What are we doing wrong?

The DeLonghi EC155 is the most affordable pump-driven semi-automatic espresso machine we offer. This little powerhouse packs 15 bars of pump pressure, so getting a good extraction is simple and fast. Delonghi’s patented Sempre Crema Filter helps ensure you’ll get a layer of rich crema on your shots, and the EC155 also comes with a filter basket designed for use with ESE (Easy Serve Espresso) pods to make brewing even simpler.
A dial on the front of the machine controls all of the functions on the DeLonghi EC155, from brewing to steaming to hot water. For making cappuccinos, lattes, and other espresso-based milk drinks, the EC155 features a steam wand with an attachment that makes steaming and frothing milk a breeze. Maintenance is also easy, thanks to a removable 35 oz water reservoir, drip tray, and straightforward cleaning cycles.
The DeLonghi EC155 lets you create delicious espresso 2 different ways. You can use the Sempre Crema Filter to brew using your favorite ground coffee beans, and depend on a smooth layer of crema every time you brew. The EC155 also comes with a special filter basket for use with ESE pods for added convenienceno grinding, dosing, or tamping needed.
A dependable pump means consistent, well-extracted espresso shots and lots of steam. The DeLonghi EC155 features a powerful 15 bar pump to create a consistent extraction every time. Its also self-priminga rare feature for a machine at this price point. This feature means you dont have to worry about complicated set-up when you first get the machine or after a long period without being used.
A dial on the front of the machine controls the EC155 and it features 5 different settings. From left to right, they are steam, power off, power on, coffee/hot water dispensing. Indicator lights are also located around this center dial and will illuminate when the machine is on and when the machine is at proper brewing or steaming temperature.
Great heat stability and durability are the major qualities of a stainless steel boiler. They are less vulnerable to pitting and damage from scale build-up. Not only does the EC155 have a stainless steel boiler, it also has 2 separate thermostats so that the proper temperature is always reached for brewing or steaming.
If you love cappuccinos, latte, and other café-style drinks, youre in luck. The DeLonghi EC155 has a special frothing attachment that helps you steam and froth milk with ease, so you can create almost anything youd find at your local coffee shop. To steam, turn the knob to the steam icon and wait for the temperature ready light to illuminate (next to the word OK on the control panel). Once illuminated, the EC155 is ready to steam. Just immerse the tip of the steam wand in a pitcher of cold milk, turn the steam knob located on the top of the machine, and froth away. Make sure to clean the wand after every use, once it has cooled down.
If you want to enjoy a cup of tea, hot chocolate, or a bowl of delicious instant soup, the EC155 can dispense hot water right from the steam wand. Just turn the control knob to the coffee/hot water dispensing icon at the same time as you turn the steam knob. When the desired amount of hot water is reached, just turn the steam knob to stop the flow of water.
The DeLonghi EC155s 35oz water reservoir is located on the back left side of the machine. With such a large capacity, you can make multiple espresso shots and steam without having to refill. Plus, its removable, so cleaning and refilling is a snap.
No one wants espresso to drip on their countertop. The EC155 has a removable drip tray, so you can clean up after a day of brewing, or entertaining guests. Just remove and rinse with warm water and non-abrasive detergent to clean.
The EC155 is housed in durable black and silver plastic that is easy to clean and maintain.

If you would like to know a little about the many types of espresso machines we sell, this would be a good video to get you started. This video covers the machines we sell and based on your lifestyle, what you like to drink, and ease of use. It will give you an overview of different espresso machines and help you determine which one best suits to your needs.
I would watch the video and focus on a particular kind of machine—prosumer, semi-automatic, and super-automatic to decide which kind is ideal for you. Then, you can go and look at individual models to get a better idea of exactly what you want. Of course, if you narrow it down to a few espresso machines and are still undecided, give us a call and we would be glad to help!

I figured at this price point it was a roll of the dice. I would have spent more but I was afraid I wouldn't use it enough to justify it. So far, I have been surprised. Most criticize the steam quality. The short arm is fine if you use a small single serve pitcher. After practicing, I can get great froth and hot milk every time. The espresso is good, with decent crema. Certainly good enough for lattes (which is what I mostly drink). A bit small and light. Seems like it might be fragile. But so far good... if not great! I definitely think it's important to follow the instructions to the letter.

Milk Froth (other than the price)
Practice frothing. Don't blast full steam ahead, ease up to about 1/2 to 3/4. Keep tip just below the surface where you're producing small bubbles not large ones. Get the right size pitcher -- and a metal tamper for grounds.

I don't really have any that wouldn't drive up the price of this unit.

I agree if you set yourself up to believe in the machine and use it as you are supposed to this can be a fun machine to own as it actually does work.

This machine will produce an excellent espresso IF the grind is perfect. I am disappointed with the plastic used for the coffee wand. It used to be all metal.

I have to agree with the reviewer who says that the coffee comes out so fast, regardless of grind, that you get no flavor and no crema. I had bought this machine for our vacation home, thinking that I could go low-price for the occasional usage. But this thing is basically a piece of cr*p. Even with minimal usage, the steam pump died, and that must have been after pulling fewer than a couple of dozen shots. I could have sent the machine back under warranty, but I was so disappointed with it that I just let it sit in a corner gathering dust. Today I decided to call the service center to get an idea of what it might cost me for shipping and repair, and they were totally unhelpful, refusing to give a guess as to the repair or shipping costs. Well, after a bit of internet research I determined that round trip shipping costs would be between $30 and $40. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that the repair cost would most likely bring the entire outlay to more than 50% of the cost of a new machine. If I actually liked the machine, I might have decided to go ahead, but as it stand it looks like this appliance will be set out on the curb with other the other trash. Adding insult to injury, when I tested it out the other night (because I wanted to refresh my memory about what wasn't working) the damn thing burnt my pinky finger when I was putting it away. It must have been out of spite.

The portafilter is a small 54mm size and will not accept the standard amount of coffee grounds that I would otherwise put in the 58mm portafilter under my Gaggia.

The machine has been a big disappointment. My drip coffee maker makes a richer coffee than this machine. I use a very fine grind and pack the coffee in and it drips out so fast that the coffee couldn't possibly be as rich as it should be. I have written to customer care with no response. Perhaps my machine is defective.

I would like to amend the comments I posted in a review Nov. 25, 2009. In that review I expressed frustration with the short frothing wand which I believed caused the milk to overflow the pitcher by the time it became hot. I recently discovered that by using a slightly smaller pitcher and opening the steam control valve a smaller amount instead of full blast I am able to steam the milk very easily and quickly without creating an overflowing pitcher. I really like this machine and stand by the favorable comments in my previous post. I'm very happy with my recent discovery that allows me to take full advantage of the steamer. I'll admit to some degree of operator error on that one. :-)

I had brought my old tired Krups machine to work because I didn't want to get a nicer, more expensive machine (like a super-automatic) broken. It was fine for cuban coffee but that was it. I bought the DeLonghi based on reviews and price and what a gem it turned out to be! Best crema I've ever gotten out of almost any machine. For the price, I've never been happier. PS. Thanks WLL for the free espresso cups and saucers!

I'm very happy with the quality of the Espresso this machine makes. I read the other reviews before selecting this model, and I agree this machine produces a surpisingly good quality brew for an affordable price. It heats up rapidly and in a short time I can make 2 double espressos before heading out the door in the morning. I do find the steam wand to be very frustrating to use. I had read that the distance between the counter top and the tip of the wand was very short, and I solved that problem by turning the machine so that the wand protruded beyond the counter top. The issue I have yet to solve is that the wand is so short I need to fill the frothing pitcher within an inch of the top. Then by the time the milk starts to get bubbly hot the frothing pitcher begins to overflow. If I reduce the volume of milk in the pitcher the wand is too short to steam the milk. With that rather large exception, the machine does produce a wonderful shot of espresso.

Magnificent espresso, but had to return it after 4 months. I'd done all the maintenance, descaled just last month, but no water would move through the head, other than the occasional drip. Pulled it to pieces, scrubbed everything clean [which I'd done just last month, and nada. I returned it to the store who replaced it with a new one. I'll see how long this one lasts.

This is a great machine, I love it. Makes a great shot. For the price its worth it. Even if it should go in a year and need to be replaced, which I don't believe it will, its worth the $99 when you compare to money saved from Starbucks! One note though, This website lists the portafilter diam as 54mm, its not. I bought a 53 mm filter based on that info and found out its to big. I borrowed a friends calaper and measured the Insied Diam of Single and Double shot basket. It is 52 mm. The built in tamper on this unit is 50mm. They don't sell a tamper smaller than 53 mm on this site. The built in tamper feels cheap and could break after a lot of usage. So I am going to have to hunt down a 50mm tamper somewhere or somehow make my own. One other note. I can get the milk to forth, but not on the first heatup of the steamer. I usually have to froth milk till green light goes out, shut of steam and wait till light comes back on and finish up frothing. If I do that I get great froth.

The plastic Jet Frother needs to be removed to clean by unscrewing and I suspect those plastic threads won't hold up by continually removing and replacing. A press-on frother with an inside gasket would probably have a longer life.

A A If you are using your own grinder, I would suggest making the grind a little bit more fine. If you are using pre ground coffee, you can tamp it down a bit to slow the water down in the grounds to get a more robust extraction from it.
I just received my EC 155 last night. The unit that the portafilter attaches to is not aligned. Is there a way to move it without ruining the machine so that the holes where the espresso comes out will line up with the larger holes on the drip tray? or is this defective? Also wondering how the baskets lock into the portafilter? I assume there must be a way to lock them in so that they don't fall into the trash or knock box every time you empty the used grounds.

mjackson ♦ Stacy,
Not sure exactly what you mean by all the questions. Here is what i can help with, Lock the basket in place using the thumb slide right near the basket, In your manual it is picture 13. I do not think it is defective and the holes lining up is not important. I hope this helps
Does this machine have the capability to make regular coffee as well as espresso? Or just espresso and hot water? Thanks,

Michael Rosso ♦ Caitlyn...Thank you for your interest in the DeLonghi EC155. This machine is not really designed to make "regular coffee". However you can make Cafe Americanos, which I believe taste better that regular coffee. Thanks
Michael Rosso ♦ Jug...Thank you for your interest in the DeLonghi EC155. It does not come with a permanent water filter. It does use metal brew baskets in the brewing process. I hope this information helps, however if you have any other questions please contact us directly at 1-888-411-5282 option 1. Thanks.
I am trying to find a combination machine that makes espresso (so i can make starbucks-type drinks at home) and regular coffee for my husband. All the ones I see seem to have terrible ratings. Do you know of a good one that is moderately priced?
I currently have a Nespresso but it doesn't make espresso for my latte drink the way I like, i.e., it is not strong enough.
Thanks !!

mjackson ♦ Kristin,
You may want to buy a reasonably priced good espresso machine like the Gaggia machines, You can then make a great espresso and steam milk. You can make an Americano using the Gaggia as well . An Americano is espresso poured on top of hot water in order to dilute it some and it is then just like a cup of coffee. Some people even like them better then regular coffee. You can get hot water form the Gaggia, or even microwave a cup . By reasonable cost I assume you mean under 200 dollars. If you are considering spending more then there are other options such as a super automatic which start at around 400 dollars and they can do both. I hope this helps and let us know if you have any more questions.
Hi !

Thanks!!!! Can't wait for some awesome espresso!!!!!!!!!

mjackson ♦ Eric,
Congratulations on your new purchase and your new machine. The Delonghi will use a 54 mm tamper. I hope this helps and have fun with your new machine.
I tried making my first latte, and I couldn't get the process down for frothing the milk and making the espresso. I made the espresso first, which was great and perfect, but the frother spued out hot water not steam. My old maker could do both at the same time. Apparently this one can't.
Question: Do I froth the milk first in a cup. then pack the coffee in the machine and make the espresso? I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong to get steam, not hot water.
Thanks for you help.

Michael Rosso ♦ Richard... You will need to brew your espresso first. Then wait a few seconds before you froth and steam your milk. Remember you will need to purge your steamwand of residual water before you start to steam. Thanks.
My DeLonghi EC155 has started dripping pretty steadily from the frothing wand when I brew espresso. Also, the ready light never comes on any more, although I have tested the temp of the water and it gets up to at least 174°. The espresso output drips when I am using the frothing wand. If I want the milk to get pretty hot, it also tastes a bit watery. I have had it 4 years, and it is possible that it is just wearing out. I wonder if there is a gasket or something I can replace. If not, and I have to get a new espresso maker, should I stick with this which used to make decent enough espresso and cappuccino (and I have extra filters and such already), or should I upgrade. I have a new capresso infinity burr grinder and I don't want to replace that yet, but I could afford $200 or a little more for the espresso machine.

Michael Rosso ♦ Barbara...It sounds like the steam wand valve needs to be replaced. Looking at your price range for a new machine I would suggest either the Gaggia Color or the GAggia Pure with a pressurized brew basket. Thanks
Hello,
We own a DeLonghi EC 155 espresso maker. One convenience we've discovered is that the frother spigot doesn't reach far enough down into the frothing pitcher due to the short length of the steam tube. Is it possible to buy a longer replacement steam tube that would fit this model?
thanks,

mjackson ♦ Russell,
I am sorry there is no way to extend the wand. It is ideal for a 12 or 20 oz pitcher. It is designed to create foam easily. You should not have to put down the wand rally far in the pitcher. It should work well and I hope this answers all your questions.
there is still water left in the coffee filter holder. did I not grind the coffee enough?

MikeR No, with a machine like this, that does not have a 3 way solenoid valve, it is perfectly natural to have a 'mud' of sorts, or water on top of the grounds after brewing.
mjackson ♦ Dorothy,
There will probably always be a little water left in the filter. The important thing is your shot timing and how the espresso tastes. You may want to try adding a little more coffee in your basket. That will decrease the amount of space between your coffee and the bottom of the grouphead. If your grind is to fine your shot will come out to slow. I hope this helps and let us know if we can be of any more help.
