When you combine DeLonghi’s innovative automatic milk frothing system and the convenience of Nespresso capsules, the result is the Lattissima EN680.M. The Lattissima has been designed to make brewing delicious shots and creating café-style drinks simple, and with a minimal amount of clean-up when you’re done. Nespresso capsules eliminate the need for grinding, dosing, tamping, and cleaning coffee grounds, while the removable external milk frothing system is easy to place in the refrigerator for storage or in the dishwasher for cleaning.

The DeLonghi Nespresso Lattissima 680 also features a powerful 19-bar pump to ensure a great espresso extraction, a passive cup warmer, and programmable brewing buttons for short and long shots, cappuccinos, latte macchiatos, and even hot water for tea. The drip tray and capsule dump box are both removable for simple cleaning, and the 40oz water reservoir can also be removed for filling. You can even push the drip tray back to accommodate glasses underneath the coffee spout.

The Lattissima’s styling matches all of this modern functionality, with stainless steel housing and a die-cast zinc, aluminum, magnesium, and copper alloy front (ZAMAC for short). Plus, it stands just 10.3” tall and 8” wide, making the Lattissima a compact and functional addition to your kitchen counter.

Features and Benefits: Coffee

Nespresso Capsules

What’s the big deal about capsule brewing systems, anyway? The easy answer is that single serving capsules are convenient – with no grinding, measuring, or tamping involved, all you have to do is select your favorite flavor and place the capsule inside the machine. These Nespresso capsules are specially designed so just the right amount of water flows through them during the brew cycle; then, they are automatically ejected into an internal dump box after brewing is completed. Their appeal also lies in the protection capsules provide by sealing the coffee from the harmful effects of moisture, light, and air.

Design

The first thing you’ll notice about the DeLonghi Nespresso Lattissima 680’s design is the coffee spout. Teardrop shaped, even your large cups should fit underneath – and if they don’t, simply remove the drip try for extra room. To the right of the coffee dispenser are illuminated buttons for cappuccino, latte macchiato, short espresso, long espresso, hot water, and standby. Each is labeled with a different symbol for easy identification. To the left of the spout is the hot water dispenser, which can be removed and swapped for an automatic milk system, which produces warm, steamed milk and perfect foam. The main on/off switch is located in the back of the machine. This intuitive design makes using the machine simple.

Brewing Espresso

The hardest part of brewing on the Lattissima is deciding which Nespresso capsule blend you prefer. The gently packed capsules’ colorful design will brighten an otherwise hectic morning. Once you’ve made your decision, open the lever located in the center, on top of the coffee spout, insert the capsule, and close the lever. Press the espresso or lungo (small or large cup) button, and the button blinks as the machine brews espresso directly into your cup. If you prefer a cappuccino or latte, make sure the milk system is inserted, and press the cappuccino or latte button. Milk and espresso are then dispensed into your cup. Once this is complete, lift the same lever again to eject the capsule into the internal container, and close the lever again. You’re all done!

Programming Options

The Nespresso 680 Lattissima comes with pre-programmed volumes for espresso, lungo, and hot water, but that doesn’t mean you have to stay with them! If you want to change the volume of your coffee, insert a capsule and press and hold the button corresponding to the drink you want to adjust. Release the button once the desired volume has been reached. The flow of water will stop and the button will blink 3 times to confirm the new volume has been set. Adjusting the hot water is even easier – just press and hold the hot water button until you have the volume you want. The button will blink 3 times, confirming the new volume. If you change your mind about the new volume, reset the factory settings by pressing the standby button for 5 seconds.

Cup Warming Tray

The Lattissima 680's stainless steel housing is complement by the passive cup warmer on top. Passive cup warmers work by using the residual heat from the boiler to warm the cups. The cup warmer on the 680.M is also a great storage place for your cups. Brewing your espresso into a warm cup preserves its temperature and flavor.

Features and Benefits: Frothing and Hot Water

Making Cappuccino and Latte Macchiato

Knowing how to froth and steam your own milk is undeniably a skill, but not everyone has the time and patience to perfect it. That’s where the patented milk system comes in. The machine recognizes when the milk container rather than the waterspout is inserted, and lights up the cappuccino and latte macchiato buttons as well as the espresso and lungo buttons. Adjust the frother regulator depending on the quantity you want, and the kind of milk you’re using (skim milk produces more froth than whole). Place your cup below the coffee spout, and move the milk spout so it is pointed into the cup. Select either the cappuccino or latte macchiato button, and your preference is dispensed into your waiting cup.

Caring for your Milk System

The automated milk system allows you to press and hold the button labeled “clean” located on the front of the milk system to the left of the spout in order to rinse out the milk. The 25 oz milk container can then be removed and stored in the refrigerator, or cleaned in the dishwasher. The only thing left for you to do now is use a damp cloth to wipe down the connecting tubes where the milk container was inserted.

Hot Water

The Nespresso Lattissima also dispenses hot water – great for tea, americano, instant soup, or hot cocoa. Insert the hot water nozzle in place of the milk container, and the espresso, lungo, and hot water buttons light up. This means it’s time to press the hot water button for up to 13 oz of hot water.

Features & Benefits: Care, Maintenance & Other

Removable Drip Tray and Dump Box

It’s easy to keep your Nespresso Lattissima clean with the removable drip tray and dump box. If you cannot close the lever after you insert your capsule, this means that the dump box is filled with spent capsules, so it’s time to remove and rinse the container. A drip tray level indicator shows when the drip tray needs to be emptied, so just remove the drip tray cover and rinse. You can also remove the drip tray to accommodate larger cups, an added bonus when dispensing hot water for tea.

Removable Water Reservoir

The removable 40 oz water tank is not dishwasher safe, so be sure to empty and rinse by hand – fresh water is important for a great tasting shot of espresso. When the water tank is empty, the milk recipes and coffee buttons will flash for 5 seconds to alert you.

Descaling

Descaling is necessary if you want to keep your machine operating in peak condition. This process removes the buildup of minerals in your machine’s brewing components, and only takes about 20 minutes. You should descale about once every 3-4 months, though the exact frequency of your descaling will depend on the hardness of your water.

If you would like to know a little about the many types of espresso machines we sell, this would be a good video to get you started. This video covers the machines we sell and based on your lifestyle, what you like to drink, and ease of use. It will give you an overview of different espresso machines and help you determine which one best suits to your needs.

I would watch the video and focus on a particular kind of machine—prosumer, semi-automatic, and super-automatic to decide which kind is ideal for you. Then, you can go and look at individual models to get a better idea of exactly what you want. Of course, if you narrow it down to a few espresso machines and are still undecided, give us a call and we would be glad to help!

Warning: This coffee is so good it will turn you off to others! We purchased this machine for our small office of 6 employees. The machine was easy to set up and use, right out of the box. The milk froth and coffee is excellent. The coffee is available in different varieties and strengths which suits all our requests. Try the sampler pack before you order to get an indication of what you like. The only thing we wish Nespresso offered is Hot chocolate pods for the machine. I've seen other requests for this online, so hopefully they will get the hint and add them to their website. Some people say the pods are expensive, but they range from .55 to .80 per cup. That's still cheaper than buying out, and you get MUCH better coffee. We have not descaled yet, but I did have to reset the machine because the milk frother was acting funny. But I think it's because someone hit the wrong button.

I drink Starbucks Venti 16 oz Lattes in a tall cup. Can the Lattissima 680 do this? - double shot expresso with milk to fill 16 oz cup?

A A Helen,

The 680.M can be programmed for different volumes of water/milk for each drink button. You may need to use two capsules of coffee for the best flavor, as they are really designed for 2-8 oz of coffee per capsule. You can set it to extract more water through, but the flavor would get diluted the more water you pull through one capsule.

what are the key differences between in the Latissima line? (680 "premium", 660 (older?), 520 ("plus")

I believe the 680 has a cup warmer and hot water--but any major differences?

thanks

mjackson ♦ Stephen,

Yes there are some differences. The biggest differences withe the 520 is no cup warmer, not as much programming for different drinks, and a smaller milk container. The 680 has a 25 ounce container and the 520 has a 12 ounce container. The 680 is a much heavier machine. The 660 does not have the same type of removable milk container. I hope this helps and let us knwo if you have any more questions. Here is a link to the Delonghi comparison page. http://www.delonghi.com/us_en/family/nespresso/

Have a great day and thanks for thinking of us.

We have had this machine for over three month and I think it is time to descale. The milk only comes out in smallish quantities compared to when we first got it. It takes three or four goes to fill a cup. Am I right in thinking this is due to the need for decalcifying?

mjackson ♦ It may indeed be the need to descale. I am not sure exactly. Nespresso provide all of the technical support for the machines that are made to brew Nespresso capsules. I would try the cleaning and descaling that is recommended for your machine. If that does not help try calling Nespresso at 1-800-562-1465.

Zack Smith Sony, Thank you for your question. The DeLonghi Nespresso Lattissima is able to hold 12-15 used capsules. This depends on the size of the capsules, if they are the longs or the shorts. With room for that many used capsules you will be able to go a longer time without emptying the container. The Lattissima has a 1 year warranty through DeLonghi. If you have any other questions please do not hesitate to contact our sales team. Happy brewing!
