Features

The Café Retro espresso machine sparkles with the looks and sound construction of the good ol’ days, but features some of the latest innovations desired. So even if the semi automatic conjures a nostalgic feeling, convenience and efficiency allow this espresso maker to keep up with today’s fast-paced life. Perhaps best of all, the machine is easy to use and affordable.

Espressione is a well-respected Italian company with three decades in the industry, and the experience shows in its attention to detail. The smart design includes an adjustable steam wand and hot water dispenser that leaves plenty of room to fit different sized cups beneath it. A durable lever operating the wand works like the arm of a slot machine and gives you great control when steaming drinks. When used for steaming milk, the attached “Maxi Cappuccino” frothing device makes creating a light and fluffy froth easier for those new to the craft. The Café Retro also includes two different types of portafilters, one a pressurized version that lets you pick and grind your own beans before brewing, and the other a portafilter designed for the Easy Serving Espresso system. This system helps reduce cleanup because the portafilter uses pre-packaged pods of espresso served in single shots. Other clever features include a slender drip tray with a handle for easy removal, a cup warmer with rails to prevent cups from falling, a removable stainless steel drip grate, and a housing compartment for the cord.

Inside the machine, the 24 oz aluminum boiler is durable and heats up rapidly. A vintage-style temperature gauge on the front panel reassures you the boiler is hot enough for making quality drinks. The sturdy inner workings of this espresso machine will help make the Café Retro part of your espresso experience for a long time to come.

The Retro is available in four catchy colors—red, orange, silver, and black. Other accessories include single and double-shot filter baskets for the ground coffee portafilter, a 7g coffee scoop, and tamper.

Features & Benefits: Coffee

2 Portafilters

The Café Retro includes two chrome plated brass portafilter handles. One works with the ESE (Easy Serving Espresso) system for quick and easy use with less mess. The portafilter uses pods that are single serve prepackaged shots. The other portafilter is a non-pressurized 58mm portafilter that comes with single and double-shot filter baskets.

Boiler

The 8 oz boiler is made entirely of aluminum, which means it is highly resistant to corrosion. Aluminum also is a metal that heats up quickly, ensuring water in the boiler is the proper temperature when ready to make high quality drinks.

Toggle Switches with Indicator Lights

There are two sturdy toggle switches, including one on/off switch and another switch letting you alternate between the brewing component and the steam wand. When the switch is in the brewing position, you may also use the hot water dispenser to make tea, hot chocolate or hot cider. Each switch has a corresponding indicator light. One light shows when the machine is on and the other light indicates when the steam wand or brewing function is ready. The light will remain on until the boiler is up to brew or steam temperature. When the light goes off you are ready to brew or steam.

Cup Warmer

Preheating your cups is essential for quality espresso. The Café Retro holds up to six espresso cups on its cup warmer, and features two rails to prevent the cups from falling. It is a passive cup warmer heated by the residual heat of the boiler.

Features & Benefits: Frothing and Hot Water

Hot Water Dispenser

An adjustable hot water dispenser makes it easy to fill any size cup for Americanos, hot chocolate or tea. There is no delay between dispensing hot water for drinks or after brewing.

Steam Wand

The Café Retro has a stainless steel steam wand that comes with an attached Maxi Cappuccino frothing tip. The tip sucks in air and injects it into the milk for quick and easy frothing. It takes just a little under a minute for this function to be ready after brewing espresso and only about 30 seconds to re-heat when steaming multiple drinks.

Features & Benefits: Care, Maintenance and Other

Water Reservoir

The removable clear plastic reservoir has a line to mark the maximum capacity. It holds 23.5 oz and is removed from the back of the machine. This amount works well for a user who has four to five cups a day. Refilling the reservoir regularly is always a good idea for making the freshest tasting coffee.

Temperature Gauge

The Café Retro has a dual temperature gauge on the front control display. This gauge allows you to view the temperature in the boiler both for brewing and steaming.

Housing Construction

The machine is constructed with a steel body with thermo proof painted metal finish. The removable drip grate is stainless steel and the drip pan is plastic.

If you would like to know a little about the many types of espresso machines we sell, this would be a good video to get you started. This video covers the machines we sell and based on your lifestyle, what you like to drink, and ease of use. It will give you an overview of different espresso machines and help you determine which one best suits to your needs.

I would watch the video and focus on a particular kind of machine—prosumer, semi-automatic, and super-automatic to decide which kind is ideal for you. Then, you can go and look at individual models to get a better idea of exactly what you want. Of course, if you narrow it down to a few espresso machines and are still undecided, give us a call and we would be glad to help!

This is the third time I am buying an Italian kitchen appliance and I am almost done buying anything Italian after this. I used to have the cheapo Krups steam machine that worked fine for 8 years before I decided to "upgrade". Got a Gaggia manual lever press (factory 16) that looked absolutely fabulous, but it developed problems after 4-5 years. First the thermostat went, which was ok, I could just switch it on and off. Then the lever wouldn't work. I mean, how can a MANUAL machine stop working?? The authorized repair place in San Jose sat on it for 3 months and couldn't get any parts or info from Gaggia. So now it sits in an attic. That's when I got the Espressione Cafe Retro in Red. Again, looks gorgeous, and "reasonably" priced at below $400. A year later the thing develops no pressure at all. Even through the year, it was very finicky, depending on a very particular grind consistency. A little coarse and the coffee is disgusting, and a little fine, and there's more leaks around the portafilter than the dykes around NoLo during Katrina. I had a deLonghi toaster oven crap out on me in a year as well. Italians all study Michaelangelo and Leonardo, but few seem to study engineering. I mean, these are the simplest appliances there are, especially a toaster oven. And yet it won't work for more than a couple of years!? Stick to German or American appliances. I think my next machine will be back to the cheap steaming Krups.

Espressione Cafe Retro

I'm a little disappointed. The coffee flavor is fair. My Retro leaks when it heats up, both initially, and especially when I heat for steam. At least it leaks from the ring, so I can catch it in a cup. It did this even when brand new. It's messy. It leaks about one espresso cup full of water while heating for steam. The pressurized porta-filter aperture plugs up sometimes (the filter part) and then doesn't work. I don't know how to clean it. My wife hates it because of the mess. I think it's OK, but I paid too much for it. I'm still going out for good coffee.

How Long Have I Been Using This Product?

What's Best About this Product?

It looks cute, like a little robot. Heats up pretty quickly.

Some Helpful Tips For Using this Product:

I was excited by the idea that I could get a machine that could do both pods and loose coffee, but the engineering is just not there yet. Next time I'll buy a machine that does only one or the other.

My Experience With Using This Product:

Coffee Lover

The Coffee I've Tried With This Product:

Lavazza and locally roasted espresso, ground at the shop.

Some Improvements I Would Recommend for This Product:

It's over-priced at $400. It's worth maybe half that, in my opinion. Also, the Retro should really have some pressure relief built-in in case the filter gets plugged, but it doesn't. The first time it plugged, the porta-filter twisted off and got coffee everywhere. It plugged mid-way through a cup of coffee. Now I watch the machine _very_ carefully.

Best Performing Retro Machinei n the Marketplace

I follow what is stated in Consumer Guide and concur with their review completely which gave it a BEST BUY award. BUY THE MACHINE it's fabulous. "The Espressione Cafe Retro is an elegantly styled unit that is both easy to use and efficient. Available in four different metallic colors (red, black, orange, or silver-now white also), the Cafe Retro sparkles thanks to a hint of glitter in its thermo painted metal. As its name suggests, this unit has a Retro look--with two silver toggle switches and corresponding mini bulb lights to indicate power/readiness and function (steam or espresso). There is also a thermostat indicator (with both Fahrenheit and Celsius markings) on the front, which lets you see the exact temperature for optimum brewing and frothing. The Cafe Retro is equipped with quality parts, starting with a solid heavy-duty steel body and chassis with rust inhibitor, a powerful 18 BAR pump, heavy-duty 0.7-liter (24-ounce) aluminum boiler, and 1050-watt heating element. You also get two chrome-plated brass porta filters--one for use with ground espresso and the other suitable for use with pre-filled pods. This machine is incredibly easy to use; just pre-heat the machine by flipping the on toggle switch, insert the appropriate filter, and when ready, flip the second toggle switch to activate brewing. The boiler needs no recovery time so you can brew multiple cups in succession. The removable water stand holds 3 cups of water. The Espressione Cafe Retro 1385S is also equipped with a maxi cappuccino wand, which delivers a powerful jet of steam for expert frothing. The wand can also be set to dispense hot water for tea or cocoa."

Decent, but maybe not as great as it should be

This machine is stunning on your countertop. The lever to start steam is retro, and feels good to pull on. The basket is fairly cheap, though. When knocking out grinds, expect the screen to fall out, due to poor design. The temperture gauge is accurate, and helpful. Overall I am pleased with the machine, but lack of a 3-way valve makes for troubles down the road. Mine had to be sent back after 6 months of daily shots, due to a loss of pressure. The drip plate often dislodges itself. The water resivoir is small-ish (only allowing 2 shots and 2 steams before emptying. The cup warmer is fairly useless. 6.5/10 for a slightly better-than-average machine.

How Long Have I Been Using This Product?

6 - 12 months

What's Best About this Product?

The steam lever is handy. The thermometer is good.

Some Helpful Tips For Using this Product:

The second shot made, in a row, always backs up when loosening the basket, so be prepared to clean grinds off your countertop.

My Experience With Using This Product:

Connoisseur

The Coffee I've Tried With This Product:

Costadoro Espresso

Some Improvements I Would Recommend for This Product:

Better drip plate. Higher quality basket should be used. This one feels flimy, and the screen often drops out when knocking used grinds free. A larger water resivoir would make the machine better as well.

I'm trying to replace the group gasket on my Espressione Cafe Retro machine can someone tell me how that is done. looked online and it said that a screw needs to be removed underneath the filter. I have the gasket and I see where it is supposed to go, I just can't figure out how to remove the old gasket and install the new gasket. There is a round fitting in the center of the filter with four holes on it. I tried turning it but it doesn't budge.
Thanks for any advice
Ron

How do I know what espresso machine to get?? :( I'm new to drinking coffee and espresso, but love the taste of espresso.
I'm considering the Espressione Café Retro Black, but am wondering if this only makes a single shot at a time, and can you make a cup of coffee as well?

Please help!
Karen :)

All the machines will make single shot or double shot. Check out the Gaggia in the same price range. You can make an americano which is like a cup of coffee. It is hot water and espresso. The brewing process is different and the grind is different for regular coffee. Call if you have more questions.

We do not carry the Delonghi model so I am not sure. I do like the Delonghis if you can find that one as far as build quality goes. The Espressione is designed in Italy and both machines feature Italian design and engineering. I hope this helps and give us a call.

I have a Cafe Retro. I need a replacement for the black plastic extension for the steam wand. The threads are worn on mine and it blows off when I try to steam milk. I would also like a plastic insert for creamier cappuccino. The machine came with one, but I seem to have lost it. Do you sell any of these items?

I mainly make latte's and mocha's. My Pavoni pump is on it's way out, and I'm looking for a machine that will make hot mocha's easily. Is this a good machine for that use? Can it steam milk easily?

It is a good machine and certainly had a great look to it. It does for the price have a very good boiler size. It is 24 ounces and does have a good amount of steam power. It also comes with pressurized and non pressurized portafilter capability. I think it is a good value and a fun machine to use.
