Features

This is a one of a kind fully automatic commercial style espresso/cappuccino machine. The embossed copper and bronze is luxuriously finished with lacquer. When you look close you can see how the machine has been hand made by its Spanish craftsman. The eagle is removable or it can be turned to face any direction. This espresso machine has programmable coffee dispensing and can brew and steam at the same time. This makes it a perfect choice for home use, an office environment or even for a low volume commercial application like a deli or bakery. The internals of the Athenea are just as impressive as the exterior. Making it easy to produce commercial quality espresso. Accessories include a chrome plated brass portafilter, tamper, single shot filter basket, double shot filter basket and a 7 gram coffee scoop.

Please Note: Regulations for commercial use vary between states. Be aware of your local requirements. Machines carrying an NSF approval are labeled as such. Please visit our policies page for warranty information.

Features & Benefits: Coffee

Commercial Size and Style Portafilter Handle

Made of chrome plated brass for excellent heat stability which is essential for producing top quality espresso.

Commercial Brewing Group

The Expobar Athenea has a chrome plated brass brew group with a thermal siphon and pre infusion. This means that it is always at the proper temperature for brewing. The pre infusion gently soaks and conditions the coffee before applying full brewing pressure to help extract all the flavor from your coffee.

Commercial Design Heat Exchanger Boiler System

The all copper boiler has a capacity of 1.8 liters. It has an internal heat exchanger that prevents the water used for brewing from coming in contact with the water stored in the boiler for steaming and hot water dispensing. With its commercial style design you can brew and steam or dispense hot water whenever you want to. This is especially important when entertaining or when used in a commercial application.

3-Way Solenoid Valve

The 3-way solenoid valve is a commercial feature that relieves the water pressure off the coffee when the brew switch is turned off. This serves two functions; it dries out the coffee to prevent dripping and makes it easy to knock the coffee out of the portafilter with one knock. It deposits this water into the drip tray.

High Quality Controls with Temperature Ready Light

The easily programmable controls are a breeze for anyone to operate. There are four buttons, that when programmed will measure the amount of coffee going into your cup and shut off by its self. This allows you to focus in on creating the perfect froth while the machine takes care of the espresso. There is also a main power switch and ready light that lets you know when the machine has achieved the proper pressure for operation.

Programmable Buttons

The Expobar Office Athenea has a 5-button touch pad for activating the pump and programming your favorite drinks. Four of the buttons are available to program to automatically dispense the desired volume of water.

Cup Warmer

The cup warmer on the Athenea will hold up to 9 espresso cups. It is made out of stainless steel and gets its heat directly from the heat off the boiler.

Features & Benefits: Frothing and Hot Water

Hot Water Dispenser

The hot water dispenser is wand that is mounted on the right side and is controlled with the knob directly over it. The wand can be positioned directly over the drip tray so it is easy to set your cup under it for preheating.

Steam Wand

The steam wand is on the left and is long and is high enough off the counter to easily fit any frothing pitcher without having to tip it.

Features & Benefits: Care, Maintenance & Other

Multiple Safety Switches and Controls

If the water level in the boiler gets low the electronic controls sense this and turn the pump on to automatically fill the boiler. If the reservoir runs out of water a CPU board will turn off the heating element to prevent overheating. A manual reset high temperature switch is located on top of the boiler as a secondary safety switch.

Boiler Pressure Control

The boiler temperature/pressure is controlled through a professional grade pressure controller. It senses the pressure in the boiler and turns on the heating element in the boiler as the pressure drops.

Maintenance

Back flush the Expobar at least every few days. For commercial application you should back flush it at the end of every day. It is a simple process that takes only a few minutes. Put a blank filter basket into the portafilter (supplied) and add a tablespoon of cleaner. Install the portafilter into the machine and turn on the pump. The pump will be noisy as it start and will start to quiet down as the pressure builds. When the pump has quieted down, turn off the brew switch and the cleaner will be blown up into the brew group, through the 3-way solenoid valve and down into the drip pan. Do this until the cleaner that is being directed into the drip pan is just free of coffee colors. Finish the process by rinsing out the brew group.

Housing Construction

Constructed of real copper and bronze. All of the pieces are embossed and lacquered.

Warranty

One year parts & labor warranty

If you would like to know a little about the many types of espresso machines we sell, this would be a good video to get you started. This video covers the machines we sell and based on your lifestyle, what you like to drink, and ease of use. It will give you an overview of different espresso machines and help you determine which one best suits to your needs.

I would watch the video and focus on a particular kind of machine—prosumer, semi-automatic, and super-automatic to decide which kind is ideal for you. Then, you can go and look at individual models to get a better idea of exactly what you want. Of course, if you narrow it down to a few espresso machines and are still undecided, give us a call and we would be glad to help!

Can Expobar machines use espresso Pods? How do they compare to other semi-auto untis in the same price range? I have looked at so many yet I'm about as clear as mud. I'm an engineer so like what I've read, but just want a little better opinion from the experts who sell so many different types of machines.

Whole Latte Love Staff Expobar machines are not designed as pod machines, but it is possible to brew pods with them by using the Gaggia pod filter basket. Because of the high quality brewing components, Expobar machines are designed to make an excellent shot of espresso. This is best done by using your own freshly ground coffee rather than pods. Pods do offer added convenience when brewing, but with a highly capable machine like the Brewtus II, you will always get the best results if you can perfect the grind and tamp yourself.

I just have a question regarding my espresso machine. The coffee that comes out of the machine is not that hot. Is there anyway I can control the temperature? Or should I leave the machine switched on for longer period before I use it? I usually switch it on for 5 minutes, make a latte and switch it off.

Whole Latte Love Staff There are a few things that will help get your espresso hot. The first, which you mentioned, is letting the machine heat up a little longer before you use it. Make sure that the temperature ready light comes on before you try to use the machine. After the machine says its up to temperature, you’ll also want to run a "blank shot". This is simply activating the brew function while the empty portafilter is in place to allow hot water to come through the brew group and portafilter. In addition, you should preheat the cup you’ll be brewing into with hot water. Cold brew groups, portafilters, and cups will absorb the heat from your espresso, making it colder and reducing the amount of crema you get. Preheating all of these components prevents that from happening and helps you to get the perfect shot.

I have an expobar commercial machine which I purchased from you a couple of years ago and it leaks when the espresso is forced through.

Whole Latte Love Staff If you have a leak pouring over your portafilter during brewing, it leads me to believe that you need a new group-head gasket. You can purchase this part directly through us by calling us at 888-411-5282.

It has been taking longer to froth a pitcher of milk lately. A thermometer in a cup of water from the porta filter indicates only about 180 degrees. Do I need to increase the temperature and if so, how?

0

Vote

0

Whole Latte Love Staff The temperature of the water in your cup is fairly normal - although the machine brews at a higher temperature (around 200F), after its exposure to air and absorption of some of the heat from your cup, 180 is right on target, so I don’t think it’s a temperature issue. It sounds like you may simply need to give your steam tip a good cleaning. Just add a spoonfull of Cafiza (what you use to backflush) to a cup of hot water and let the steam tip soak for a while. As some preventative maintenance, after steaming your milk you should blow some additional steam out of the wand to ensure nothing is stuck in the wand. If you’ve tried this and are still experiencing problems, give us a call at 888-411-5282 so that we can more thoroughly diagnose the problem.

How do i remove the shower screen to clean it.

0

Vote

0

Whole Latte Love Staff To remove the shower screen on the Expobar, you’ll need to use a flat head screwdriver. Insert the flat side of the screwdriver on the right side of the group head, between the shower screen and brew group, and apply gentle pressure to start prying it out. Then do the same thing on the left side of the group head to prevent bending the screen. You can request a set of detailed instructions on cleaning the shower screen a brew group by calling us at 888-411-5282.

I have a problem with my espresso machine. When I try to turn it on, it immediately trips the GFI switch on the outlet. I occasionally have to reset an interior switch in the machine, but this is a different problem. Any suggestions? Thanks.

I bought my Expobar from you about two years ago. Lately, I've noticed that when pulling a shot, water is leaking out where the portafilter meets the brew head. The only way to avoid this is to crank the portafilter in really hard to the right. Even so, the problem seems to be getting worse. Can this be fixed?

0

0

Whole Latte Love Staff It sounds like you simply need to replace the brew group gasket, which is generally necessary every year or so. Please contact us at 888-411-5282 so we can send you this part and instructions on how to replace it.

Should I be removing the filter basket every day from the portafilter for thorough cleaning? How do you easily do this given how secure it fits...is this what the stubby flat screwdriver i see mentioned is for?

0

Vote

0

Whole Latte Love Staff You don’t have to remove the filter basket every day for cleaning, but I would recommend rinsing and wiping the filter basket out every time you’ve knocked out your spent grounds. However, the filter basket should be removed every month or so for deeper cleaning. You can usually remove them with a fingernail, but a butterknife or flat screwdriver will do if it’s really snug - just be careful not to bend the basket with your force. Then simply add a teaspoon of Cafiza (what you use to backflush your machine) to a cup of hot water and let the filter baskets soak for 10 or 15 minutes. Also, hold the filter basket up to the light to see if any of the holes are clogged. If you do notice this, you can clean the holes out with a toothpick and then soak the baskets as recommended.

Whole Latte Love Staff This machine is meant for home use and is a great addition to any kitchen. The only thing you’ll want to make sure of is that it will fit where you want to put it, since it is fairly tall - it stands 30"H x 11"W x 14.5"D.
