Features

The newest generation of the vibration-pump operated, plumbable Expobar Brewtus espresso machines will let you brew and steam in perfect autonomy. The Brewtus IV-P is equipped with two independently operated boilers—one dedicated to brewing and the other to steaming operations. A very unique feature on this machine is that it is set up to use either a water line or work with included reservoir. Expobar has upgraded the Brewtus IV-P to include a control switch that will let you deactivate the steam boiler. If you will only be brewing espresso and do not need to steam, froth or dispense water, turning the steam boiler off and just running the brew boiler will allow the Expobar IV-P to heat up faster and reduce operating costs. This model can warm up to brew temp in less than 15 minutes. Once you activate the steam boiler, it will be ready to go in under 10 minutes.

Along with independent boilers, the Brewtus IV-P is also outfitted with a Gicar PID (Proportional-Integral-Differential) controller to monitor and maintain brew boiler temperature. Like all Expobar prosumer espresso machines, this unit comes with a chrome-plated brass E-61 brew group to maintain optimal temperature stability and deliver professional-quality espresso. The Expobar Brewtus IV-P is a high-end semi-automatic machine recommended for discerning espresso connoisseurs.

Dual Boilers

The Expobar Brewtus IV-P has twin copper boilers, each furnished with its own 1250-watt heating unit. Instead of one shared boiler, which must alternate between brewing and steaming temperatures, these two boilers operate independently of one another. Unlike heat-exchange machines, each of the Expobar’s boilers has been set to the ideal temperature for its unique function. Boiler environment will not fluctuate, when users switch from extracting espresso to steaming or frothing; this precision, in turn, delivers more reliable results, comparable or better than those achieved with commercial machines.

Improved E61 Brew Group

The Expobar Brewtus IV-P is equipped with the iconic chrome-plated brass E61 Brew Group. An intricate thermal siphon system circulates from the boiler through the group head to maintain temperature stability and create the ideal condition for espresso extraction. This model has been upgraded to feature Expobar’s new brew group, which has a hollow pre-infusion chamber for better espresso extraction. Hot water is directed through the brew group and once it makes contact with the shower screen, it floods back up into the pre-infusion chamber before being evenly dispersed through coffee grounds. The Brewtus IV-P also comes with a chrome-plated brass 58mm portafilter as well as a single and a double-shot filter basket.

Water Connections

This Expobar model can operate using the removable, 90oz reservoir or be connected directly into a water line. It comes with the plumb line that you can attach to the bottom of the machine and with it we include a 3/8" flare adapter that is ready to be attached to your water line. A lever under the machine lets you easily alternate between using water from the reservoir and plumbed line. To prevent against possible leaks, a solenoid valve is installed inside the machine that is in line with the plumbed water line.

Brew Boiler Shut Off

If you only want to use the steaming and hot water dispensing functions of the machine, you can turn off the brew boiler. To turn it off, just push and hold the "up" arrow on the digital display for 2 seconds, the display will then say "off." To turn it back on, push and hold the "up" arrow for two seconds.

Steam Boiler Switch

There is an additional control switch, located on the front panel of the machine; it operates the steam boiler. The Expobar Brewtus IV-P lets you run the brew boiler while keeping the steam boiler off. This results in faster warm up time and lower operating costs. But, should you decide to activate the steam boiler, within 10 minutes, this Expobar model can deliver powerful and consistent steam for lattes and cappuccinos.

Gicar PID Control

The PID controller is specifically designed for the Brewtus IV-P by Gicar, a renowned manufacturer of espresso machine controls. This control system utilizes pulses of electricity to ensure that the brew boiler is evenly heated and guard against temperature variances. The PID control can be used to adjust and regulate boiler temps to allow you to achieve optimal results for a variety of espresso roasts.

Three-Way Valve

The three-way valve will relieve the brew group of pressure post extraction. This will help to dry out the puck and allow you to clean the brewing components by backflushing the machine. The three-way valve empties directly and neatly into the drip tray. The Expobar Brewtus IV-P should be backflushed every 7-9 days to maximize performance and durability.

Electronic Boiler Refill Control

The Electronic Boiler Refill Control monitors water levels within your steam and brew boilers to prevent a dry boil. It will activate and refill the boilers with water from the reservoir or plumbed line if levels are low. It can also deactivate the boilers, if they are dry to guard against damage to the machine.

Progressive Pre-Infusion

Lift the brew lever up half way and you’ll activate the Expobar’s progressive pre-infusion feature. The machine will gently and methodically moisten the coffee grounds prior to extraction to ensure the most flavor and aroma out of your shot.

No-Burn Steam Wand and Hot Water Dispenser

The steam wand has been carefully insulated to remain cool to the touch, even while it’s in use. It features a single-hole commercial steam tip that can deliver non-stop steaming and as well as create micro froth when necessary. The Expobar Brewtus IV-P is also outfitted with a separate hot water dispenser that lets you make tea and Americano on demand. Both the steam wand and hot water dispenser are mounted on ball joints and can be rotated in any direction to accommodate different sized cups and pitchers.

Slip-Resistant Feet

This Brewtus comes with a set of four slip-resistant feet. They are made of heavy-duty plastic and rubber to prevent the machine from coming into contact with your kitchen counter. Since the Expobar Brewtus IV-P is elevated, under-machine cleaning and maintenance is easy to accomplish.

Housing and Construction

The body of the machine, including the cup warmer, drip tray and drip tray cover, is made of heavy-gauge stainless steel for increased durability. The Expobar Brewtus IV-P has a shiny mirror finish with traditional styling that gives it an understated elegance sure to be appreciated by espresso lovers.

Jason Smith I have pretty hard water at my house so I currently use bottled water for my espresso machine. I'm looking at the Expobar Brewtus and trying to decide between the 'P' and the 'R' versions. I can plumb water to the machine and while I can add filters to the line those won't soften the water. Any opinions on picking between the two machines? The 'P' would let me continue to use bottled water but I wouldn't mind plumbing and a quieter machine thus I'm also considering the rotary pump version but that would mean I'd have to plumb it with hard water. Thanks for any information you can offer.

Mark Jackson Jason, This is a great question. Probably not the answers you may expect. Bottled water may actually be hard as well if it is a spring water that has minerals in it. I would go with the R version and you can get a filter that softens the water. Here is one for example. http://www.wholelattelove.com/Bunn/easyclear.cfm?ConID=7 You can replace the Cartridge as needed. It will come with instructions based on how hard your water is and your usage. I think if you get the Brewtus Rotary and the Bunn filter you will be very happy. Call me if you have any questions.

darin hensley Does the grouphead temperature stay at a static temp, or is it dynamic with variables influencing it such as the room temp. and the amount of time the machine has been on?
1:31 AM 1-29-12
Mark Jackson Darin, Great question and thanks for asking. It will not be affected by many things. Once warmed up and turned on takes about 15 minutes it should remain stable. You may want to consider running some water through the grouphead. It is a fairly large amount of metal. You should do that before brewing your first shot. It will preheat the group head and then you will have stable temperatures. I really love the Brewtus and if you are thinking about getting one, you should.

darin hensley Does the PID monitor the the grouphead temp? How accurate 0.# is the thermostat for the brewer? And to what degree of accuracy does the PID show? Does this machine do pre-infusion?
5:53 PM 1-25-12
Mark Jackson Darin, Thid is what he PID does from our website- The Brewtus IV is also outfitted with a Gicar-build PID (Proportional-Integral-Differential) controller that will let you monitor and adjust brew boiler temperature. As with all Expobar machines, the Expobar Brewtus IV comes with a chrome-plated brass E-61 brew group that has been proven to excel at maintaining stable brewing temperature. For commercial-grade steaming and frothing capabilities, the Expobar Brewtus IV is a solid choice. So its job is to maintain exact temperatures in the brew boiler. It does so in a very precise way. There is not a monitor for the grouphead temperature. It does not read that it only gives you the expected brew temperature. It is very accurate and can be set to increments of one degree Fahrenheit. You can do pre-infusion and I have actually done a video on it. You can watch it here- http://www.wholelattelove.com/videos.cfm?playvidID=404. It is a great machine.

Michael Krejcik Hi - what is the advantages/disadvantages of the three expobar brewtus models? Thanks, Michael
5:21 PM 12-19-11
Mark Jackson Michael, The Brewtus is an awesome machine. The great thing is it can help you make consistently great shots. The difference is really in the water supply to the machine. The advantages to each machine as far as shot quality is there is no difference. The ability to plumb a machine is the convenience, the ability to put a water filter on line that you can change is also great. This is important especially if you live in a area with hard water. The advantage of the rotary pump besides being convenient is the fact it is quieter then the rotary pump. Please call if you have any questions.

kas boss Will the exobar brewtus brew a regular cup of coffee?
10:35 AM 1-20-11
Zack Smith Kas, With the brewtus machine you can brew a shot of espresso and then add the hot water to make it an americano or you can fill a full cup to make it a cafe crema.

What I Like About The Brewtus

Double Boiler The Brewtus has a double boiler. What this means is you have one boiler for steam and another boiler for brewing espresso. The great thing about a double boiler is it gives you great temperature stability for brewing espresso. It is interesting to note how the espresso taste can change when brewing at different temperatures, The Brewtus with a double boiler allows you to brew at exact temperatures shot after shot. The double boiler is one of the most coveted features among espresso fanatics and is found on only the best machines.
photo

PID The PID is what gives the Brew boiler the ability to brew to exact temperatures. PID stands for Proportional, Integral, and Derivative. Here is a simple explanation of what it does in regards to the brew boiler: a PID is a computerized, digital thermostat. It monitors and learns how your boiler heats. It then will accurately control any temperature you want it to maintain. The advantage is it is a variable you can control as you learn to make repeatable great shots.

E61 - The Brewtus IV is outfitted with a chrome-plated brass E-61 Brew Group. This type of group head is well known for its ability to help maintain exact or in this case calculated temperature stability. It does this by using a thermo siphon system that circulates hot water from the boiler to maintain group head temperature. The Expobar Brewtus IV machine now offers a concave pre-infusion chamber that allows the user the ability to control pre-infusion by using the lever. Many people feel that by experimenting with the pre-infusion you can really control the taste of the coffee.

Plumbing options We felt it was important to give the Brewtus IV many options for plumbing. We have covered all the bases. You can use it as a pour over with the vibration pump reservoir model. You can hook a water line directly to it with the Rotary pump model. This model is quieter and also will let you attach a water softener/filter system to protect your machine. You also have the option in a reservoir model that can be plumbed or you can use it as a plumb in version. So with this model you can use it either way and it is fitted with a vibration pump.

Construction and Durability We are very proud of all the positive feedback we get in regards to how much people love their Brewtus. Many of these people use their machine multiple times a day and love not only the great shots they get but also how well the machine works and holds up. We have done a great job of constantly improving the machine realizing that one of the most important things is the reliability and durability of the machine. We are proud of our efforts and how well the Brewtus line has held up for us.

What I would improve:

Size- The Machine especially in the plumbed in version may be a little larger in size and heavier then people expect.

Larger Cup Size Right now the Expobar IV It fits a 4 and inch cup underneath the spouts. It would be nice if it could fit a larger cup say about 7 inches for a larger travel cup or a 16 ounce cup. But it certainly is not a deal breaker because if it is made to take a taller cup it may not fit under a normal counter.

Recommended users:
Those at-home baristas that want to use a commercial style machine with commercial style quality. Also for those that entertain often. I really think is the machine for people who never want to suffer from upgradeitis or espresso machine envy as this is the best of the best for a home machine. I also think this is the machine for espresso lovers that treat espresso like wine. They want to taste, compare, experiment and maybe even rate. No matter how well the espresso rates this machine gets high marks from all who are fortunate enough to have purchased one.
