Gaggia Espresso Dose - Introduction Video

Features

The Gaggia Espresso Dose features a dosage button that allows the user to set their preferred water volume dosage for one or two cups of espresso – a convenient twist on the classic semi-automatic Gaggia machine. Housed inside the warm silver ABS exterior lies a durable stainless steel boiler, the heart of brewing and steaming. Stainless steel is an ideal boiler material – it provides excellent heat retention for properly extracted espresso, and it resists scale buildup and deterioration. Not to forget about those cappuccino and latte lovers, the Gaggia Espresso Dose uses a Pannarello frothing wand so you can foam and steam milk easily.

Features & Benefits: Coffee

Housing and Construction

The control panel is located on the top of the machine, and features straightforward push buttons as well as the steam valve knob to control your brewing and steaming. The ABS plastic housing is durable and easy to clean – just wipe down with a damp cloth when needed. The Gaggia Espresso Dose’s stainless steel boiler is a standout feature, especially on a machine with such a small footprint. Even though the Dose is compact, it still provides superior power for making steam and hot water.

Brewing

The Gaggia Espresso Dose offers you three filter baskets to choose from – single, double, or pod – so select the appropriate one and insert it into the portafilter. Insert the portafilter into the chrome plated brass group head, and turn the machine on – it should take about 6 minutes to warm up. Once it’s warmed up, add coffee to your portafilter and tamp down using the included tamper. Replace the portafilter and press the coffee dispensing button. If your dosage is already set, it will stop when the dosage is reached; if the dosage is not set, press the coffee dispensing button again to stop the flow of coffee. Keep in mind that you should never dispense coffee for longer than 40 seconds.

Programable Water Dosage

To program your coffee dosage, add grounds to the portafilter and insert as you normally would. Press and hold the coffee dispensing button – after about three seconds the pilot light will start flashing, and the water pump will start up. Coffee will begin dispensing, so once you have your desired amount, release the coffee dispensing button to stop the flow of coffee. Your water dosage is now set.

Pods or Ground?

Coffee pods are pre-ground and pre-tamped single servings of espresso – you don’t have to worry about grinding, measuring, and tamping. While they are more convenient than using grounds, they also give you less control over each drink. It’s not a bad idea to try both pods and grounds to see which you prefer – the Gaggia Espresso Dose is compatible with both.

Features & Benefits: Frothing and Hot Water

Pannarello Frothing Wand

The Pannarello attachment on the frothing wand injects hot steam into your milk, making frothing and steaming for cappuccinos and lattes a cinch. Just press the steam switch, and wait for the temperature ready light to illuminate. Open the steam valve knob to release steam, and when you’re finished, close the knob and press the steam switch again. Remember to wipe down the steam wand when you’re finished to prevent milk residue from building up.

Hot Water Dispenser

The Gaggia Espresso Dose’s steam wand also acts as hot water dispenser – great for americanos, tea, or hot cocoa. Just wait for the machine to reach brewing temperature, open the steam knob, and press the hot water button. After you have your desired amount of hot water, press the hot water button again and close the steam knob. To prevent any damage to the boiler, don’t dispense water for longer than 40 seconds.

Features & Benefits: Care, Maintenance, and Other

Water Reservoir

To refill your 42 oz water reservoir, simply remove it by lifting it up from the back of the machine. Gaggia recommends using purified or bottled water in the reservoir to decrease the frequency with which you’ll need to descale. Check your user manual for detailed, straightforward instructions on how to descale your Gaggia Espresso Dose.

Cleaning

The drip tray and cover have a water level indicator, which rises as the drip tray fills. When it becomes visible, the drip tray is filled and needs to be emptied and washed in warm, soapy water. To keep your machine looking its best, use a damp cloth to wipe down the body of the machine. The seal inside of the brewing head should be cleaned, and the shower disk should be unscrewed and cleaned periodically depending on the frequency of use.

Included Accessories

The Gaggia Espresso Dose comes with a detailed instruction manual, portafilter, single shot basket, double shot basket, pod basket, filter, tamper, measuring spoon, and warranty.

Gaggia Espresso Dose Review:

What I Like about the Machine:

Color/ Looks

I really like the look of the Gaggia Dose. It has a solid ABS housing that has a nice silver finish. It will work well in many kitchens and certainly be a conversation starter.

58mm portafilter

The Dose comes with the commercial sized portafilter. It is constructed of chrome plated brass which is helpful in brewing a good shot of espresso. It has a double spout which allows for easy brewing into one or two cups.

Programmable Button

The Dose features a programmable button which makes brewing a breeze. You can program the button to brew as much or as little as you would like. On most machine that are in the same price point as the dose you have to manually start and stop the brewing process.

Easy to fill water reservoir

On a lot of espresso machines I often find that it is hard to fill the water reservoir. On the dose you have two options in which you can fill the talk. You can fill from above or you can completely remove the reservoir and take it to the sink, it will hold 42 ounces.

Boiler

The Dose has a 9 ounce stainless steel boiler. Most machines in this price range feature a boiler of around 4 ounces. Have 9 ounces in a nice feature to have because it will give you the ability to a bit more steam power than some smaller boiler machines.

What I would change on the machine

Portafilter

One thing that I do not like on the dose is the plastic spouts on the portafilter. This will not effect the quality of the brew, but it would be nice to see chrome plated brass pouts.

Panarello Wand

The steam wand is a great match from someone who is looking for an easy froth. The only downside of this wand is the lack of control. I would recommend purchasing the latte art wand. With the aftermarket wand you have the ability to use a panarello wand or remove the outer sleeve which will give you a single hole tip.

Customer Match/ Recommended Environment

The Gaggia Espresso Dose is a great machine for anyone who is looking to brew a quality espresso without breaking the bank. With easy to use push buttons and a commercial style portafilter the dose is a great machine for the price point. Match it up with a good burr grinder and you'll be brewing espresso for family and friends in no time.

If you would like to know a little about the many types of espresso machines we sell, this would be a good video to get you started. This video covers the machines we sell and based on your lifestyle, what you like to drink, and ease of use. It will give you an overview of different espresso machines and help you determine which one best suits to your needs.

I would watch the video and focus on a particular kind of machine—prosumer, semi-automatic, and super-automatic to decide which kind is ideal for you. Then, you can go and look at individual models to get a better idea of exactly what you want. Of course, if you narrow it down to a few espresso machines and are still undecided, give us a call and we would be glad to help!

Brew First, Steam First. Which is it?

Ok so you just received your new semi-automatic machine and are getting ready to make a nice cappuccino. You have watched the local Barista, done your online research and have quickly come to the conclusion that you are getting conflicting information on how to properly make a cappuccino or latte with your new machine. In some instances, you may have seen the drinks being made by brewing your espresso and then steaming and frothing your milk. Likewise, you may have also watched videos that show a latte being made in a glass cup where the espresso is being poured into the steamed milk. So which is it you might ask. "Do I brew first or do I steam first"?

The consensus with our team here is that it is better to steam/froth your milk first and then brew your espresso. This especially holds true when using a single boiler espresso machine like the Gaggia Classic or Rancilio Silvia. This serves three main purposes:

First, it is much more fast to make a latte or cappuccino by cooling the machine to brew after steaming then to wait for the machine to heat to steam after brewing. You can very quickly have the machine ready to brew simply by switching to the brew button and running hot water through the steam arm. The wand will change from producing steam to producing hot water very fast. Once you have hot water instead of steam you are ready to brew. This should take mere seconds with most mid level semis like the Gaggia machines.

Second, it is better for the machine and its internal components to be at the cooler brew temperature then the hotter steam temperature. In fact, Rancilio states in their manual that the steps mentioned in point one is necessary in the normal operation to prevent the machine from burning out heating elements and boilers.

Third, performing step one with the mid level semi-automatic machines is a great way to maintain a relatively consistent temperature when brewing. If you start brewing at about the same time after the steam turns to hot water you can maintain a consistent brew temperature with every shot. This is something known as temperature surfing which is a topic all of its own.

This is a much improved machine from my old system that had a pressurized basket. It has taken some learning to make real good shots but once you figure it out we have made some great coffee with this machine. My only dislike is the water tank, the site gauge is only on one side, for my kitchen the wrong side, and the darn over flow hole about an inch down from the top of the tank makes a real mess. The steam wand is easy to use and froths milk quick and easy. Enjoy your machine we do.

i owned this machine for 2 years. the plastic brew button broke about a year ago, but i was able to still use the machine by "mickey mousing" the switch. the machine still works well, i use it at least twice a day. we have certainly gotten our moneys worth. the spent grounds are wet because the dose doesn't have the valve to keep water out when you are done brewing. just a minor inconvenience. this is a good machine for the beginner, learning how to grind, tamp and brew. now i'm waiting for it to finally fail so i can talk my bride into getting a rancilio silvia!

This is the right machine for me

Overall I am very please with this machine and costumer service. I did have some leaking out of the box, but WLL was very good about getting my machine up and working, so they quickly replaced it for for. Since then My machine has been running super smooth. As long as I clean the valve every now and then, I dont get any leaking when in "steam mode". I am able to make espresso that is compare-able or better than the espresso I have made from commercial machines. They key to having good espresso is have fresh roasted beans, and to grind right before making the espresso. So I bought a MDF grinder, and I fine tuned the grind to fit my machine. The milk steaming ability was quite limited. I do not like the stock Pannerallo wand. It might make it easy to make foam, but it makes it impossible to make the ever sought after micro-foam bubbles that allow to make latte art, and taste suer silky and smooth. To fix this issue, I ordered a Saeco Pannarello wand. It fits perfectly of this machine, and when I use it with out the cover I have control to make milk with tinny micro bubbles or giant bubbles. The dose feature is completely useless in my opinion. I never use this feature because the dose never comes out exactly the same when using coffee. Maybe I didn't try hard enough... i dunno... But I like to eye-ball my shots, because sometimes they just come out a little differently. My only regret is I wish I had bought the machine that doesn't have the dose feature, and I would have saved $50 that I could have put towards the grinder or new steam wand.

How Long Have I Been Using This Product?

What's Best About this Product?

It can make amazing espresso, with practice. It can steam milk well, but you will have to replace the steam wand.

Some Helpful Tips For Using this Product:

Buy a grinder so you can fine tune the grind to the machine. Make sure it is a good grind FOR ESPRESSO, and that you can fine tune the grind size. It will make a Huge diffence. Be prepared to experiment a lot with grind size to find the best fit for your machine. I bought a Gaggia MDF, and did the Step-less mod, and then I played around until I found the sweet spot, and MAN! wow that espresso is full creama and flavor! If you want to make latte art, or just want good steamed milk, you must replace the wand. I foudn the Saeco wand to be the most practical, and it works great. I just use the wand with out the sleeve and it allows me to have great control of steaming quality. Clean the brew head after each pull so you dont get yucky bitter grinds in the fresh espresso. In general, just keep your machine clean all the time and it will keep working great. somtimes the machine will leak from the shower head, and that means it is time to clean the valve. Clean the valve and it will stop that silly leaking.

My Experience With Using This Product:

The Coffee I've Tried With This Product:

Illy, Lavaza, home made blend from whole foods, Roasting Plant fresh roasted coffee. I like to make my own blend from Whole Foods' fresh roasted coffee.... works great and I can buy just the amount I need for that week so I always have fresh roasted coffee.

Some Improvements I Would Recommend for This Product:

better steam wand.

Some of the Other Machines I've Used:

big giant amazing commercial machines (manual - fully automatic) in restaurants and a coffee I used to work at.

Gaggia Espresso Dose

Yesterday my Gaggia Dose made a pop sound after I had frothed my milk. It took several attempts to press the coffee but finally it did. This morning the machine turned, lights flashing as it warmed up but there was no steam. And when pressing the coffee the liquid was cold. What happened? Is this something that I can fix. I am pretty handy.

techkathy Jere - It may be the fuse. If the machine is pumping water for the coffee but the liquid is cold, click on the link below to get a new fuse.

Can this machine be backflushed? Otherwise, is it clean easily?

0

mjackson ♦ Waroros,

It can not be backflushed as it has no 3 way solenoid. It can though be cleaned and maintained fairly easily. You can certainly run a cleaner like Cleancaf through it and that will help keep the boiler clean. You can also follow instructions we have written up to clean the group head as well as the group valve assembly. Here are the instructions if you are curious.

Group Valve Assembly Cleaning Instructions

If you are able to get steam and hot water through the steam arm, but are unable to get water through the brew head, this will show you how to clean the Group Valve Assembly.

Please read the entire instructions before you start.

1. Unplug the machine and make sure it is cool before beginning.

2. Remove the reservoir, drip tray, drip pan and lay the espresso machine on its back.

3. Locate the shower screen. It is where you lock the portafilter handle to the group head. Use a short Philips head screwdriver to remove the shower screen.

4. Now look up inside the group head. In the center you will see (pictured below) the group valve.

5. Use a wide, flat screw driver to remove the group valve. There are two slots parallel to one another on each side. Turn it counter clockwise to remove it completely.

6. Behind the group valve you will find a spring and valve seat. The valve seat is the rubber stopper at the end of the spring.

7. Clean the stopper with a stiff brush. You can also clean your group head with a stiff brush and some descaler to remove coffee buildup. The group head pictured above is clean. Your group head should look the same after cleaning.

8. This is also good opportunity to clean the shower screen as well. The cleaner they are, the better your coffee will taste. DO NOT use a pin to clean out any holes in the screen. It can cause future clogs because it will enlarge the small holes. Make sure you can see through the holes. Be sure to scrub the screen well.

9. Now reassemble the group head in reverse order. Do not tighten the group valve too much or water will not exit the boiler.

10. Tip the unit back up and install the drip pan, drip tray and water reservoir.

11. Fill the reservoir and plug the machine in and you are ready to go.

I hope this helps and this is a great machine for the money.

Can you modify this machine by installing a Silvia steam wand like you could on the Gaggia Coffee?

0

TechMilanoItalia Ian, we have taken a look at the machine and it is possible to do, however we would not recommend doing this while still within the warranty period as it would void your warranty. The ball joint for the steam arm does have to be accessed from the inside and has to be disassembled to make the modification.
