As a matter of convenience, the milk carafe can be disconnected and stored in the fridge until you’re ready to brew.

For those who love to entertain, the Gaggia Accademia’s intuitive interface offers a big advantage; it’s so simple to use your guests can make their own beverages! On top of its impressive features, the Gaggia Accademia is a modern, attractive machine that would look great in any kitchen. Beverage temperature, strength, and volume can be preset to your specifications. The same goes for milk selections, which allow you to choose from minimal, normal, or no froth options.

Brewing Benefits

The Accademia has a 15-bar pump and two powerful stainless steel boilers, which will let you to alternate between brewing and frothing without any down time. Additionally, Gaggia’s unique pre-brewing cycle infuses coffee grounds with hot water to help extract the flavor and aroma of your drink. The brew group is detachable for quick, easy cleaning and maintenance. The Accademia has a height-adjustable telescopic coffee dispenser, with a max height of 6.5” to allow you to accommodate a variety of cups, mugs, and glasses.

Grinder and Bypass Doser

This unit has a heavy-duty ceramic burr grinder, along with a double-lid, aroma saving bean hopper. Seven grind settings allow you to exercise a fair amount of control over the grinding process. The Accademia also has a bypass doser to cater to pre-ground/decaf drinkers. Both the grinder and bypass doser are accessible through the top of the machine.

Steaming and Frothing

This Gaggia super automatic has an automated one-touch Milk Management System that can deliver steamed or frothed milk directly into your cup, depending on the chosen drink. An external milk circuit ensures that milk does not enter the machine and the detachable carafe can be stored in the fridge for your convenience. An automatic cleaning cycle rinses the milk circuit after each use, to ensure that it is free of clogs and contaminants. Should you wish to steam/froth manually, you’ll be able to do so, as the Accademia has a steam wand/water dispenser.

Water Management

The Accademia has a generous 1.7-liter water reservoir; this unit comes with a four-step Mavea Water Filter to prevent scale and mineral build up. Users can control water hardness to ensure great tasting coffee.

The Gaggia Accademia has an alert system that will notify you if the dregs drawer or drip tray need to be emptied, or if the bean hopper needs to be refilled. The display screen will also warn you, if the machine needs to be descaled.

A Time To Clean

Let’s face it, espresso machines require regular maintenance. This type of maintenance also requires time. If you recall, I previously posted a blog entitled “Time Is Money”. I may seem a little obsessive about the issue of time but as I have mentioned before, I do NOT particularly like to waste mine.

Cleaning my espresso machine feels like I am doing just that, wasting time. It really bothers me to think about it though I know it has to be done. I know there are others out there that share these sentiments and that is why, again, it is wiser to go with a one-touch super-automatic espresso machine rather than a semi-automatic.

It is just a matter of time for any espresso machine to require a proper cleaning and descaling. I’ll spare you the boring details as to why we need to do this exactly but it is certainly vital to the functionality and longevity of your machine.

Urnex Cafiza formulated for cleaning your super-automatic espresso machine in a jiffy from www.wholelattelove.comThe nice thing about super-automatic one-touch machines is not only do they alert you when it is time to clean, but they also do the cleaning for you. All you need to do is add your descaling cleaning agent accordingly, put a decent size container underneath the spouts and push the self cleaning button. Once it is finished with its 15-20 minute cleaning cycle, you simply refill your water reservoir and you are good to start brewing again.

Oh and as un-manly as it may seem to read instructions, you may want to consider reading the owner’s manual for cleaning your machine. Why? Because they are not all the same and you don’t want to miss an important step. This cleaning should ideally be done roughly every 2-3 months depending on how heavily you are using your machine.

I would much rather have a super-automatic one-touch machine that cleans itself rather than going through the whole back-flushing process required for a semi-auto or prosumer machine. Not to mention the ease of removing the brew group for a quick rinse, and sliding out the dredge drawer for a quick flip into the garbage, a rinse and snap back into the machine.

Gaggia Accademia Super-Automatic Espresso machine saves time from www.wholelattelove.comI find super automatics overall simplify your life by saving time and effort especially where cleaning is concerned. Semi-automatics are too hands-on even when cleaning…and don’t even get me started with the mess a grinder makes. Ugh! I am literally getting sick to my stomach just thinking of that whole mess.

I am not necessarily a clean freak but I definitely do like my kitchen to be tidy. Coffee grinds all over my counter tops is NOT tidy! Not only does the super-automatic one-touch machine aid in keeping my kitchen clean but it saves me time!

Bettina McMahon I'm a total newbie here, so bear with me. I inherited an old ((2006) Bosch Benvenuto B20 machine from my parents when they bought a Gaggia. But now, even with regular cleaning and descaling, the coffee comes out of the nozzles unevenly and even comes out of the seam behind the nozzles. I can't find any way to remove this part to clean it. Is this a common issue? Do I need to have it professionally looked at or just not worry about it? I need an informed opinion. Any advice would be appreciated. I CANNOT go back to using a regular coffeemaker ever again, thank you very much :)

Things I Like About This Machine

- Stylish & Appealing

The Accademia has a sleek look and style. It would look magnificent in any situation. The overall design and stainless steel and steel construction is impressive and beautiful. This machine would fit very nicely in a kitchen that has stainless steel appliances.

- Ease of Use

Nothing is easier as a one touch machine and as a bonus this machine will also let you steam milk with the added steam wand if you prefer. You can dial in things such as strength, temperature and size of drinks. It allows you to create drinks exactly as you like and then by pushing a button you will to get the same drink every time. Programming is very easy as well as intuitive through the programming menu. So whether you prefer an amazing espresso or a delicious latte the wide array of programming options will get you exactly the taste you are looking for. As a side note, I also find the display on the Accademia fun to watch as the drinks are being made.

- Quality of The Espresso

Having used the Accademia in our office for the better part of a year I am constantly impressed by how good the espresso is. The ceramic burrs really do great job of cutting the beans evenly and finely enough for espresso. They also are much quieter as an added bonus. In addition, the grinder is situated directly above the brew group giving you fresh coffee with every brew. You can also dial in the grinder settings as well and dosage (amount of bean ground).

- Easy to keep clean

This machine really does a nice job of helping you keep it running smoothly. You will want to use the Mavea water filter that will soften your water by removing Lime and Calcium as well as giving you better tasting water. It also has built in rinsing and cleaning cycles that will happen automatically or the machine will let you know what you need to do via the control screen. The milk container actually does a rinsing cycle after every drink to keep things sanitary, so not really a lot to deal with as far as cleaning milk lines.

Things I would Improve:

- It would be nice if the water tank would come out of the side of the machine instead of the top.

- It would be nice if you could fit just a little taller glass then four and three quarters under the coffee spout.

Recommended Use:

This machine is for those people looking for a great machine that is easy to use and maintain. Because of the one-touch features, it fits those with a busy lifestyle. Compared to many super-automatics, it gives an exceptional espresso to those who may not have thought a super auto could do such a thing. The ease of use also is great for entertaining as you can still have fun while being the barista for your party. This machine is something that will appeal to those who value their time when they have guests over.

A Super Auto For Every Price Range

In last month's article, we took a look at a few standout semi-automatic machines for every price range. This time around, we're exploring super-automatic espresso for every budget. If you're in the market for a new machine, take a moment to check out our top picks below.

Economy Machine
The Saeco Vienna Plus, available in silver and graphite, is one of our most popular starter machines. While the Vienna Plus may not have all the bells and whistles found on higher-end machines, it is a solid super automatic suitable for daily use. Ideal for the value-conscious espresso lover, this machine is easy to use and maintain.

Surprisingly accommodating, the Vienna Plus can be programmed to brew 1-8 ounces of espresso. This model also features Saeco's famous OptiDose system to let you adjust the amount of beans ground per cup to customize the flavor and strength of your beverage. For full-flavored drinks, the Saeco Vienna Plus comes with a pre-infusion cycle that saturates grounds prior to brewing.

Don't let its price tag fool you; this machine has been outfitted with quality parts and features. Beneath the hood is a stainless-steel lined Thermoblock boiler, capable of quick and efficient operation. To the right of the control panel, you'll find an integrated conical burr grinder with 18 grind settings. A Pannarello wand makes for easy steaming and frothing; it can also dispense hot water for tea or an Americano. When it's time to clean your machine, the brew group pops right out. Just rinse it under a faucet, put it back in place and you're good to go.

Jura-Capresso Impressa ENA5Mid-Grade Machine
A step up from the Vienna Plus is the Jura-Capresso Impressa ENA5. In addition to letting you customize beverage strength and volume, the ENA5 lets you program drink temperatures. It is also equipped with Jura's Intelligent Pre-Brew Aroma System, a two-step pre-infusion cycle that ensures maximum flavor and crema extraction. There is a digital display that acts as an indicator, letting you know exactly what is going on with your machine. Maintenance alerts and programming features are clearly displayed for your convenience.

The mid-grade ENA5 offers the additional option of brewing with pre-ground coffee. If you're an occasional decaf or flavored coffee drinker, the bypass doser will let you prepare drinks from pre-ground coffee and prevent cross contamination with your regular beans. Like the Vienna Plus, the ENA5 has a conical burr grinder, but with this model there are six grind settings to choose from.

A stainless-steel lined Thermoblock boiler minimizes warm-up time and accommodates on-demand water usage. The Impressa ENA5 also eliminates minerals and scale from your tap water using an advanced Clearyl filtration system. The result is great tasting drinks and reduced scale buildup. A dedicated alert will even let you know when the filter needs to be replaced.

Its frothXpress system is another big advantage the ENA5 has over the Vienna Plus. This user-friendly system will automatically steam and froth your milk and dispense it directly into the cup. You can also manually steam and froth using the dual frother plus wand. If you're looking for a well-equipped super-automatic machine, the Jura-Capresso ENA5 may just be the one for you.

Gaggia AccademiaHigh-End Machine
Want to go all out? The Gaggia Accademia is a super automatic machine that's built to impress. This machine has been designed on a one-touch platform so you'll be able to make your favorite drinks with the push of a button. There are seven programmable drink buttons for espresso, caffe, caffe lungo, cappuccino, latte macchiato, and more.

The Gaggia Accademia lets you adjust coffee strength, temperature, and volume. Even the milk options are programmable with the Accademia; you can choose from normal, minimal and no-froth settings. The Milk Management System can add perfected steamed and frothed milk to your cup but since it functions on an external circuit, there milk actually never enters the machine. In addition, this one-touch machine has a stainless steel steam wand to let you manually steam and froth for lattes and cappuccinos; it also doubles as a hot water dispenser.

Gaggia's top-of-the-line machine super automatic has a built-in ceramic burr grinder with seven grind settings. As with the ENA5, the Accademia has a bypass doser to accommodate pre-ground coffee. This model operates on two stainless steel boilers, a vast improvement over both the ENA5 and Vienna Plus. With to boilers, you'll be able to alternate between brewing and frothing without any down time.

Best of all, the Accademia is exceedingly easy to clean and maintain. The milk system has an auto rinse cycle that cleans the circuit after each use to keep it free of residue and contaminants. Also, the brew group is removable so, like the Vienna Plus, the group can be rinsed under tap water. Dedicated maintenance alerts will let you know when the machine needs to be cleaned or descaled. The Gaggia Accademia is an investment that will deliver a world class brewing experience.

If you would like to know a little about the many types of espresso machines we sell, this would be a good video to get you started. This video covers the machines we sell and based on your lifestyle, what you like to drink, and ease of use. It will give you an overview of different espresso machines and help you determine which one best suits to your needs.

I would watch the video and focus on a particular kind of machine—prosumer, semi-automatic, and super-automatic to decide which kind is ideal for you. Then, you can go and look at individual models to get a better idea of exactly what you want. Of course, if you narrow it down to a few espresso machines and are still undecided, give us a call and we would be glad to help!

I'm In Love

With my new Gaggia Accademia and Whole Latte Love. First of all I ordered it on Thursday and it arrived on Friday... I live in rural PA... unheard of. Thank you!!!! Shipping, packaging and machine awesome. Still in the newlywed stages and customizing. Will post more when I get farther along in our "relationship." But I will say this... WLL (and Dan) were wonderful in answering all my questions and very informative in helping me make a great choice. Thank you!

Some Improvements I Would Recommend for This Product:

Just improving on the heating of the milk... that's it. That's been a recurring (don't even like to use the word) "complaint" but I knew that going in and understand why. I'm a doubleshot foam/whip guy so I'm not so peeved on the milk not being hot enough. I also can whip it up with the wand if I feel the need to have an uber-hot frappo-cappo-latte-macchiato cup of something delicious.

Great Machine

I love this machine, so easy, and great results. The only drawback is, as others have noted, the automilk frothing does a great job except its not hot enough, only about 100 degrees, not 160 as needed. Simple enough to finish with the built in wand, but would be nicer if automilk went to at least 140 on max setting.

Excellence

I've been eyeing these machines for a while and wasn't sure what I was getting myself into. I'm more of a coffee or Americano kind of guy but my wife is more into the milk-based drinks. She was skeptical of the purchase at first given her daily addiction to the seattle-based chain on every street corner. She was surprised at the quality, ease, and convenience. In fact she refuses to drink any coffee-based drink that doesn't get made with this machine now. The biggest gripe is something that has been well advertised on this and other websites. The milk dispensed from the carafe frother is not warm enough. We usually use the carafe to dispense the right quantity of milk and then use the steam wand to bring drinks to temperature. A minor inconvenience but again I knew this going in. Otherwise a nearly perfect machine.

This is very simple to set up and use machine. Took me 5 minutes to get it out of the box and running. Coffee flavor is outstanding. Easy to clean and keep it clean. Does the work for you, and for those of us very picky lets you do your own coffee. I am using it at least 10 times a day and coffee is always perfect. Almost Perfect

The Accademia arrived as our third super automatic, having started with a Gaggia Syncrony in 2004, moved on to a Saeco Incanto Sirius in 2008, and now this machine to kick off 2013. Cosmetics: I find this to be an attractive machine - silver, black, nice lines and a crisp LCD display. Pretty much what you expect from anything designed in Italy. It should look good taking up as much space on the counter as it does. Internals: The bean and water reserves are small, but this is for home use and so only require refills every 2-3 days with our usage levels. It has become a routine, rather than a surprise. The brew group is the same as that of my prior machines and I have never really had any complaints about them. The internal drip tray is also small, but getting in the habit of refilling/dumping everything every other day is not a problem. Programmability: The programmability of the device is quite nice. The buttons on the face of the device give you one button access to just about everything you would want to make with this machine. I strongly recommend taking as much time as required to get your settings to your liking, so that you can proceed with just the push of a button going forward. I also like that there is an "escape" option available to stop the machine during all phases of operation. On my Sirius, occasionally I would accidentally start a double cup and it was impossible to stop the second cup, without intervening before the first cup was complete. You can configure nearly every parameter you would want to configure. I wish you could set temperatures more explicitly than low/med/high. Coffee: No complaints. To me, this is far more a function of the beans that I use than the way the machine brews. I think all of the machines that I have owned have used the same mechanics - pushing steam through grounds. The crema produced in this machine is richer than in the last two machines - but I attribute this to it being new and tight. I think the Sirius that was just replaced was getting leaky and pressure was down - it has been relegated to office duty after it returns from repair. Milk/Froth: Consistency and texture from the autofrothing attachment are really nice. You can easily program the quantity to fit your cup sizes, which is a nice feature. Here is where the machine has it's glaring weakness - the milk temperature is simply too low. All the settings are maxed out and it still does not exceed 120F. Tepid. So, make a cappuccino and it is perfect but for the temperature, so you have to dip the steam wand in and bring it to the right temperature yourself. What should be a one step process has become a two step process with a human in the loop. This ought to be fixable with a firmware update, in my opinion. I am also convinced that is why the machine is so steeply discounted. I weigh the value of the discount against the 30-60 seconds of extra steaming required until I figure out if/how to reprogram this thing for the correct temperature and it is worth the inconvenience to me. SUMMARY: Best machine that I have owned to date and available at a decent price - considering the MSRP and the level of use it gets. If Gaggia could fix the milk temp, it would be perfect. Almost.

Ease of use, consistency, and versatility, once configured, is unsurpassed by any machine that I have owned previously. The build quality is very nice - and as an engineer I really appreciate a solid piece of machinery.

Some Helpful Tips For Using this Product:

Take the time to fiddle with the configuration settings. There are many and you will need time to tweak them. But once you have made that initial investment of time, you are paid back in full and them some with the ease of use.

My Experience With Using This Product:

Coffee Lover

The Coffee I've Tried With This Product:

Various - mostly of South Pacific origins from a variety of roasters/brands.

Some Improvements I Would Recommend for This Product:

Temperature control. Even at the hottest setting the Cappuccino is produced at never more than 120F. That is tepid. It should be at least 140F and preferably 150F to be acceptable. All of these machines are micro-controller driven, so programming set points for temperatures should be available (within a range) to the end user. If they are hard-coded into the firmware, then that is a design error in the programming. However, we should be able to reprogram these machines from our computers - or at least the repair facilities should be able to do so.

Two days, everything is easy and I am not a pro. The important thing was to read the instructions - not long and important information. Already made (pushed) each option. My first two UGH, after that they were GREAT. The first ttys was before I programmed the drinks. The drinks were great after programming

One word, AWESOME!

Ordered the Friday before Christmas and had the unit on Christmas Eve. Super Fast Service. This is my second Super Auto, my first a Jura Capresso F9 that we have had for 7 years and almost 9,000 drinks. I must say I am very impressed with this machine and the reviews are spot on. The good, well built, adjustablity is awesome, the froth I get is unreal compared to the Jura, no comparrison, not only is it easier to prepare, use, and clean, the amount of froth is incredible. The milk container is far superior. The magnetic tray and ceramic grinder also make this machine quieter than the Jura. The bad, as others have stated the milk temp is not adjustable, and is not hot. Unless you are looking to slurp it right down you will need to steam it to get it hotter. But this was also an issue with my other machine so no big deal and the amount of froth I get makes this machine far superior. Cup warmer is very small and doesn't stay on when machine goes to sleep, so I still wake up to cold cups. Drip tray is smaller than Jura but if you keep a cup under spout to catch rinse water it is not a huge issue, I was already doing this on old machine. Overall I knew what I was getting when I bought a Super-Auto even with the negatives and was OK with them. The pros, far outweighed the negatives and this machine is AWESOME! Very happy with customer service so far and am willing to buy more from them becuause of that. Also, the videos on line were a huge help and the main reason I bought from WLL.

Great espresso/cappuccino, easy to use!

we've had this machine for about 1.5 months now and absolutely love it! My wife and I recently got on a coffee/espresso-kick while traveling. I've always enjoyed good coffee, but have never been a coffee snob (I can even drink instant Folgers). My wife was always a watered-down-with-lots-of-milk-and-sugar coffee drinker. Over the last year or so I've weaned her off the sugar and away from instant coffee, she now really appreciates a good cup of coffee....sometimes even black. And recently while traveling we started to enjoy Americanos, espressos and cappuccinos. So I got the itch and decided to look at upgrading our drip coffee maker. I had only a few criteria: - good espresso - milk capability (latte, cappuccino) - very easy to use/clean I knew that the only way my wife would ever make cappuccino/latte (which she loves now) on a regular basis was if the process was easy. And I mean EASY! My wife will spend hours creating fabulous lunches for our children, crafts/gifts for our friends, wonderful treats for teachers and office staff, etc.......but she will not take 5 minutes to manually froth milk and make a cappuccino, let alone the cleanup. So, some quick research, and I discovered that super-automatic was the way to go. A little more research, and the Gaggia Accademia seemed to fit our needs and budget. 1.5 months later and we couldn't be happier with our decision and Whole Latte Love. Great prices, quick service, good instructional videos, and reviews! High points: - very easy to use! (one-touch) - milk frothing is pretty darn good, especially considering the ease (good micro-foam head) - temperature is perfect for drinking (very warm, but not hot) shortly after it comes out of the machine (set on hottest setting) - very little maintenance required during normal operation, just have a rag handy to give things a quick wipe-down, especially after milk-based drinks are made - pretty good programability on the drinks (amount of milk/froth, temperature, amount of water, strength of coffee) Only complaints (pretty much what others have said): - size of water tank is a bit small (4-6 8oz drinks) - size of drip/drain pans (4-6 cycles of turning the machine on/off, cleaning the milk lines, etc....) - size of the puck-holder pan (4-6 cycles) - heat of the milk for cappuccino/latte (it's adequate, if you drink it right away, but a little warmer would be nice) You probably get the idea, about every 4-6 drinks you have to empty one or more of the drip pans and/or fill the water container. Not a major issue, but it would be nice if it were slightly larger. I wouldn't necessarily want drain-water or spent coffee pucks sitting in the machine much longer, but another day or two would be nice. The bypass filler is convenient for ground decaf alternative, would have loved it if there was another hopper (for beans). Overall, the operation of this thing is amazing. The way it flushed the milk circuit every time, the quality of the froth, the ease of use. If want a variety of good drinks (espresso, americano, cappuccino) and a machine that is easy to use, look no further! This is a great machine!

Ease of use, programability.

Some Helpful Tips For Using this Product:

Keep the bean hopper full, if it runs out you will waste the last few beans as the machine will kick-out the partial puck without brewing it.

One year of enjoyment

We've owned numerous machines, but this one is the best by far. We've had it for right at a year, and it is still a solid as it was the day we took it out of the box. The crema is really special, we love bragging about it and showing it to our friends. Most of them think our place is the best espresso place in town. Hard to argue with them about that. My wife loves her espresso with just foam on top and I have a double cappuccino. Totally the best way to start our day. We joke about putting a note on the machine indicating in case of fire take the espresso machine first, important papers second... Doesn't get any better than this Gaggia Accademia.

Have owned several semi automatics and have become a bit of a snob about the excellent shots I can do. However, my wife gets annoyed with the grinds and the mess and the amount of space the grinder and machine take up. So, after watching the WLL video and several others on youtube, I took the plunge. This is an expensive machine, plus we live in Hawaii, so any return is an expensive proposition. After setting up, the first few shots were really awful. Truly bad. Because of the time difference, had to wait til the next morning to cal WLL. So, after no more than 2 or 3 minutes with customer service, to my great relief, we made some minor adjustments, and gotta say, this machine rocks! First, the shots are possibly better than any I used to do on my Gaggia classic. They are certainly much, much more consistent. Ridiculous crema. Very, very easy and consistent. It is true that the milk is a bit tepid at 120 degrees, but The steam wand brings milk to my preferred temp of165 more than twice as fast as my old semi automatic. My preferred morning drink is a double shot latte. Be sure to use shot glasses to program it to produce one ounce per "puck". Fast, easy, perfect every time. We had some people over yesterday., and it was a snap to produce cappuccinos, lattes, and regular coffee withvery little delay. We like this machine a lot, bet you will, too.

I own a Gaggia Platinum Vision with milk island and have had no real problems with it over the last 3 years; still produces fantastic coffee and espresso. I wanted to take the Platinum to our other home in NY and wanted a quality product to replace it with. The Gaggia Accademia was my pick, especially with it being on sale :). Ordered it on a Sunday and received it on Thursday, fast service. Set up was simple, fast, and I was able to get my first cup of coffee within 20 minutes of unpacking. Here it is now, a week after ordering this item, and I've used every feature on this machine. I'm very impressed with how easy it is to use. I'll update this review again after a few months of use.

CoffeeTransfusion Here's an update. I left for about 2 months and being gone that long I decided to completely shut down my Accademia and pull the electrical plug out of the wall socket; never know what can happen while away for a long time. Got back home the first week of Sep and fired up the Accademia. Had a few cups of coffee then began having a problem with it wanting to grind and brew all by itself without any buttons being pushed. Contacted customer service and sent it in right away. I was kept updated via email on what they were doing and notified again when they shipped it back to me. Got it back after being gone for about 2 weeks and still had the same problem. Customer service folks said they had kept it plugged in for a solid week and could not duplicate the problem. They suggested I make a video of it if the problem cropped up again and send it to them. I did that and they had me ship it back in at their expense. I got my machine back within a week and have had no problems with it since. Although I hit a little bump in the road, I'm a life long customer now of WLL due to their committment to customer service. Thanks guys, and I STILL love this Accademia.

I received this machine yesterday and I am completely in love with it! The set up was quite easy, once I managed to lift the thing onto my counter. My only complaint was the lack of specificity in determining water hardness. I have been experimenting with drinks of all kinds, but I cannot describe how beautiful the mug of caffe lungo with a fabulous head of crema was this morning. My 16 year old son has had two cappucinos so far today and is raving about the lovely foam on the milk. I hemmed and hawed about making such an investment, but I'm so glad that I did. As an fyi, I have standard upper cabinets and I could not open the water or bean containers fully. I bought a small piece of felt and placed the machine on that to make it easy to slide in and out when I need to refill one or the other (and, believe me, I've been doing some refilling!) . It's working great, so far.

I have been using Jura for several years. My last super automatic was an S9 Impressa Advantgarde. I had over 8,000 cups with it, but was getting frustrated with the brew group clogging. After a lot of research and talking with the staff here, I decided to give the Gaggia a shot. I am very happy. I agree with the prior critiques. The only real issue (albeit minor) is that you have to empty the drip tray pretty often (once every other day as opposed to once a week with the Jura) and the automatic frother doesn't make the milk as hot as I would like (about the same with the Jura). My first cup was a disappointment, as was my second. I thought I had made a terrible mistake, until I realized that I had not taken advantage of all the customizing that this machine allows. The dial on the front will allow you to determine the strength of your cup as it brews. Wow. I like a very strong cup, and now my Mom will be able to have her weak coffee when she visits without me having to take drastic measures. Awesome! I am still fiddeling with the customizing buttons to suit my every preference depending on each occasion. This will take a while because I can make six different customized drinks (3 with and 3 without milk). This is much better than my S9. Also, the automatic frother is superior and easier to operate and (especially) clean than the Jura...by far. Further, you can do it yourself if you want, which is not available with the Jura. If you plan on making numerous cups of coffee (without milk) in a day, the Jura's large drip tray may carry the day. However, if you don't mind dumping the drip tray after a half dozen cups or so, then Gaggia is the way to go.

Gave this as a 40th Birthday gift, and boy was it a hit. I might as well have just been honest and given it to myself, because I was as excited to use it. It performs flawlessly, couldn't be easier to use, and looks great on the counter. It is an expensive machine to be sure, but I feel I got what I paid for. The build quality is great, lots of metal, and it is quite a bit quieter than the Gaggia machine it relpaced (that machine lasted for almost 10 years and thousands of cups, and still works in fact). The milk system couldn't be easier and the auto-cleaning works great. I agree with some other reviewers that the milk could be a bit hotter but it hasn't been a big issue. It can't hold all that much wastewater or used grounds, but the smaller reservoirs keep the machine size compact. I couldn't recommend this machine more, and am very happy I bought it from WLL. One tip: I was concerned because the overall height of the machine with the top doors open exceeds the space between my countertop and my upper cabinets. However, a felt furniture "slider" cup on each foot of the machine enables me to effortlessly slide the machine out far enough on my counter to clear the upper cabinets, and then when the beans or water are filled, the machine slides right back into place, so it is no problem whatsover.

In most respects, this is an excellent super automatic. It looks great. It makes very good espresso. It is easy to use. The milk system is designed to be simple, self-cleaning, and very convenient ... with one caveat described below. It is highly customizable. Aside from the high price, it is a top notch machine. However, it has one flaw, which some may find fatal. It simply cannot produce hot milk drinks. Milk is dispensed at just 120d F. WLL tells me this is the result of the milk system design; milk does not come in contact with the steam long enough to heat up sufficiently. It is _not_ an adjustable parameter. The steam from the steam wand is sufficiently hot, so the problem isn't the boiler temperature. Because the steam works so well, it is simple to steam a drink to the proper temperature. However, this makes the system much less automatic than the term "Super Automatic" suggests. It adds a manual step, 30-60 seconds, and wand cleaning to what should be a one-step process. In all other respects, the system is excellent.

Lets get past the price first….It is a really expensive machine…No doubt about it..With that said,it is worth every penny. The machine works like a charm, the coffee is first rate, the grinds are smooth and made in a very quiet manner unlike my prior GAGGIA machine. As a very nice bonus, the machine cleans itself after each use which is a nice treat for those of us with kids who don't ever clean up after themselves.. All in all,, tremendous machine, swallow hard on the price and then thoroughly enjoy the coffee…..If you time it right you can find the machine on sale here at WHOLE LATTE LOVE….

Great machine, looks beautiful, feels like a tank, and makes delicious espresso and milk based drinks. My favorite is the Latte Machiatto, press one button, and you have a beautiful, delicious drink at just the right temperature. Self cleaning milk carafe is an indispensable feature, makes the morning Latte a piece of cake to make just when you need it to be, before the caffeine! I find the looks, programability, and quality of the drinks far superior to my Jura ENA9, which is also a very nice machine, but in a whole different league in my opinion. Of course it's also almost $1,000 less expensive as well...Can't go wrong with this one, buy and enjoy!

We've had the machine for less than a week now, but our family has been exploring it depth and so far, after about 50 drinks ( that pace will subside when the novelty wears off), we're very happy. It's really well made: sturdy, thoughtfully designed and good looking. Italian engineering at its finest (think Ferrari, not Fiat). Haven't quite gotten the exact proporation of espresso to milk right yet on a reliable basis, but I'm confident that will come. Easy to clean. I've read some reviews where the drinks are not hot enough, but they're fine for us, even the ones with a lot of milk. Not scalding, but definitely hot. Water container could be bigger, so it needs to be refilled fairly often, but it's simple. All in All, a solid "A" so far (as it should be for the price). Conclusion: This is a great machine for someone who loves espresso or lattes, and knows a good one from a bad one, but doesn't want to become an expert barista (too much time, equipment and mess for our family of six.) If you can cede control over most of the process, you get a really good espresso drink of your choice. I'll write in again after a month or two to see if we're still as happy as we are now.

Solid machine with lots of advanced features. Brews excellent drinks and very easy to use. However there are several key design flaws that you should be aware of before purchasing or you may be disappointed. 1 - if you like your Latte drinks really hot you will need to use the manual frother. The automatic function does not get the milk very hot a all 2 - You will need to change the drip trays (there are 2 of them) very often - every 4 or 5 drinks. The drip trays are too small and the machine produces a lot on waste water which also causes you to refill the water tank too often. The water tank should also be larger. Helpful if the machine is near a sink or you will have a mess. To me these issues are a major flaw and the primary reason i rated the machine a 3. 3 - Using the bypass chute to insert pre-ground coffee creates a mess on the brew group and spills coffee ground all over the inside of the machine. It apparently is not aligned and coffee misses the chute. If you don't use the bypass this should not bother you.

I’ve been a Jura fan for many years and still think that overall they make a great product. I got a bit tired of sending in my machine every couple of years to be cleaned and tuned. One of things that attracted me to the Gaggia Accademia was the fact that it is one-touch like my Z5 but also has a removable brew group. I’m hoping that this will prevent me from having to send my machine in as much. From all I’ve read a lot of problems with the performance of a fully automatic espresso machine is caused in the brew group. Theoretically being able to remove the brew group and clean it should help prevent problems due to coffee build up. I’ve only had the machine less then a year, but I’ve haven’t had any problems yet, so the jury is still out. As a side note, although I love the one touch system, I have enjoyed being able to froth my milk manually from time to time which was a feature that my Jura machines didn’t offer. So far so good.

I purchased two of these machines(Acadamia) , one for home and one for the office. I couldn't be happier. My staff has really picked up the pace with the extra energy they posses now, and I am not losing them twice a day while they run to Starbucks. Office morale is way up. Having this at home is great also. Makes getting out of bed much easier. Have had no problems with the machine, and it makes great coffee. The milk system is fantastic and carefree.

This is my 1st Super Automatic and I love it! I was doing research on other Automatics and decided on the Gaggia Accademia and couldn't be happier. It makes great coffee, lattes and cappuccino, froths milk perfect and I love the Milk Management System with a detachable carafe. It is very easy to maintain and it's built like a safe. The only con would be like any other Super Automatic, the coffee could be hotter, but it's not that bad.

After many years of owning multiple machines this will be my 5th machine and my 2nd super automatic. To say that I am pleased with my machine would be an understatement. This truly is a one touch machine. On the front of the machine you have several beverage options. Each beverage is programmable. You can adjust the volume, the temperature, and the strength. With milk based drinks you can adjust the temperature, the volume, and the amount of froth. Personalizing the drinks is easy to do with the large color LCD display screen prompting you through every step. This allows you to adjust each drink for your personal preference. The ease of use is great. The water reservoir is located on the top left side of the machine while the bean hopper is located on the right. In between you have the cup warmer and the bypass doser which allows you to use preground decaf while your bean hopper is full with caffeinated beans. The brew group is removable so it is easy to clean, along with the drip tray and the dump box. Gaggia has produced a great machine that is simple to use and performs well. It produces a great shot of espresso with perfect crema.

This is the perfect machine for my small home office

This is the perfect machine for my small home office, especially for the WOW factor when I prepare lattes for my clients and contractors for meetings. The milk attachment so much better than I could have possibly imagined. Extremely intuitive machine when it comes to programming. Gaggia makes a beautiful and solid product.

I have been researching espresso machines for some time. We wanted a machine that could make cappuccinos and lattes like we were getting at the local coffee shop. I was excited to see this machine and all the programming that it had. The ability to make 7 different programmed drinks is what sold me. I was also impressed with the look of the machine. We have had the machine for a couple of months now and can't imagine living without it. I am able to make the perfect latte every morning by a simple touch of one button. The machine is so easy to use and everyone is enjoying it. The cleanup is so easy. The milk container even has a automatic rinse and cleaning cycle. Bottom line, great espresso easy to use and no mess, I'm a huge fan.

Just upgraded from a Delonghi 3500 and I could not be happier. The Accademia has a great front panel which allows for easy brewing. There are several drink options which will allow you to choose between espresso, cafe, cafe lungo, cappuccino, latte macchiato, and latte. You can go into each drink settings and adjust temperature, volume, and strength. The milk container is easy to use and you can place back in the fridge after you have made your drink. Overall the machine is very easy to use and has many programing options which allows for many varieties. The milk froth for my cappuccino's is perfect!

Academia is for cappuccino lovers!

About the Gaggia Academia: I have been using Gaggia Titanium machines at home and in the office for several years, owning 5 of them! I recently bought an Academia & I love it for cappuccino! Milk pitcher pops in and out of frig to keep fresh, & Academia cleans the milk jets each time you make a cup, eliminating the manual process of cleaning which takes time with Titanium, so made me drink cappuccino less. Tradeoff: Academia's smaller water container means filling more often than Titanium, but that is an acceptable tradeoff in exchange for obtaining superb and easy cappuccino! With the larger water tank on the Titanium, and considering Academia's heftier price (3x compared to Titanium), the Titanium is still best for the office crowd -- they tend to drink it black anyway, so Academia is sort of "pearls before swine" in that case. BUT, it you are a cappuccino lover, splurge on the Academia for yourself, and you will never regret it!

How Long Have I Been Using This Product?

Less than 1 month

What's Best About this Product?

The Coffee I've Tried With This Product:

part of the fun of coffee is experimenting with many different whole beans from many places and different roasts

I just got my Gaggia Accademia and I am super stoked. It's my first espresso machine so I'm totally new to all this. I got it hoping to recreate the Café crème just like we had at Brasserie L'Europeen in Paris. I'm not all to sure how to even make it because online sources vary even between if it's made with heavy cream or steamed milk and with various ways to make it. All attempts at what has been recommended online has been a failure. I'm hoping there's an espresso expert at Whole Latte Love can help me with the EXACT settings and ingredients I would need to try to replicate the amazing Café crème. I bought the Lavazza Super Crema and Illy Medium Roast and am hoping those are the right kind of beans...I heard they were awesome. I'm a total beginner, so step-by-step instructions to get it just right would be sooo helpful! Thank you so much in advance for any help you can provide!

techkathy The most important thing in replicating the coffee would be the coffee itself. Do you know which brand or type of coffee they used? Set the dosage to the maximum (3 beans). Set the grind in the middle and try a few coffees. If the coffee is too weak then turn the grind setting down to a finer grind. With a little experimentation you should be able to get pretty close to the coffee from Brasserie L'Europeen.

I have only had my Accademia for a few weeks. I purchased a reconditioned model. While it is making great drinks and my whole family LOVES it, it seems that the "add bean" message is not working. Up to now, we have been experimenting with different beans, and I've added beans when the bean level was getting low, or when I could tell by the grinder sound that the beans were getting low. Today, I brewed a coffee knowing that there were not enough beans in the hopper and the machine went through the whole grinding

techkathy Are/have you used beans that are a bit oily? An oilier bean can leave some build up in the grinder and trick the torque sensor into thinking there are still coffee beans being ground when there are none.

Karen Wright No - we've been careful about doing that. Mostly we've used Filicori Zecchini Gran Crema Forte and have also used some beans custom roasted from a local shop. Staying in the medium to medium/dark roast.

I have owned my Accademia for four months. I descaled my machine yesterday same as always. Put everything back together. Today I can not make coffee over 6 ounces where it use to be much more. The tray next to the spent pucks is full of water. This is happening with every setting, less espresso, less cafe lungo etc. I have not changed any settings. I turned the machine off and then set it back to factory defaults and am still having problems. Suggestions?

Sanfam ♦ If you have a lot of water leaking into the drip tray, there are two key possibilities--First and foremost, check the grind! If the grind is too fine, water will skip the coffee and take the path of least resistance...right into the drip tray. Alternatively, try reducing the dose (the "bean" setting in the drink preferences) and attempt to brew again. Finally, don't forget to regularly and thoroughly clean the brew unit, making sure to lubricate the moving parts of it with a food-safe grease (the Gaggia-branded lubricant and PetroGel are both perfect choices!)

I also have a whole bean espresso question for use in my new Gaggia Accademia. I like a stronger, richer coffee. I've been drinking "caffe's" from the Accademia...so 5-6 ounce pulls of the strongest (three bean) setting set two notches finer than the most course grind setting. I don't like a "winey" or "tangy" taste, as I've experienced from the Klatch "worlds best espresso" or "Belle" I like the Vivace beans better but still get some of that same taste from both the "Vita" and the "Dolce". I just tried the Lavazza "Super Crema" and find it to be similar to the "Dolce"...maybe not quite as rich and complex though. A little underwhelming. I've used Peet's "Espresso Forte" and thought it was pretty good but too oily, I think, for long term use in the Accademia. I am now wating for some Filicori Zecchini "Gran Crema Delicato" and "Gran Crema Forte" to arrive in the mail so that I can give them a try. I'm wondering if you might have any other recommendations based on my desire for a rich, stronger cafe from the Accademia...but without being either tangy/winey or too bitter. Should I stick with 100% aabica beans? I've heard good reviews about Lavazza "Qualita Oro" and "Qualita Rossa" as well as Intelligentsia "Black Cat" and Illy medium roast espresso beans. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

A A As you have found out, Louis, everyone's taste is going to vary. You mentioned some great beans (in my opinion) and also some very expensive beans (Vivace). In our compare-o-matic, if you compare coffee the same way you would compare machines side by side, it will give you a better idea of the characters of the beans. I have set up a comparison of some of my favorite beans, as I think you and I have pretty similar taste.

Let me know what you think! Of all of those, Taormina is my current go to for milk drinks, Caffes, Americanos, or just straight Espresso. I hear it going around more and more in the sales office, so I think other people are starting to get won over by this bean!

Louis Katen Thanks for all your advice Chris. Being that I'm in Seattle, I've dropped by the Cafe D'arte retail store here a few times and have tried the Taormina, Capri, Parioli, and Firenze...as well as the Filicori Zecchini Delicato and Forte. I've also tried LaVazza Super Crema and Klatch Belle and Worlds Best Espresso. I didn't care for either Klatch bean at all. Very winey and not very rich to me. Super Crema I also did not like...not very rich, winey, aftertaste that I didn't care for. Delicato was nice but not rich enough and had a slightly winey and bitter aftertaste to me. The Gran Crema Espresso Forte I like. It is my second favorite at this point. Not winey, not too bitter of an aftertaste, nice complex taste in my mouth. Taormina is really nice. I felt it was a little too dark for me. Interestingly, not really bitter though... Parioli was too tangy for me, and Firenze a little too winey. I feel, at this point, that the Cafe D'arte Capri is my favorite. Just slightly lighter than the Taormina, not bitter, not winey, deep, rich, and complex flavor. Really delicious! Most of my comparison has been, as I mentioned before, a 5-6 ounce pull with a grind set in about the middle...three notches from the finest grind setting. Hottest water temperature setting, too. I also routinely make lattes and both I and my wife like the Capri (and Gran Crema Espresso Forte) this way too. So, my conclusion...I really like both the Filicori Gran Crema Espresso Forte and the Cafe D'arte Capri. Both are delicious. There is something special about the Cafe D'arte that make is especially rich, almost dark, but not bitter and not winey. It's my favorite by just a hair. Thanks again for all suggestions.

I tried the automatic whole bean sampler and most were light to medium. Is there a darker roast bean that will work ok in the Gaggia superautomatic Accademia?

A A James,

The Grand Crema Delicato in that pack is usually regarded as a fairly intense coffee. If you are looking for something darker, I would suggest Filicori Zecchini's Espresso Forte, Illy Dark Roast, or Cafe D'Arte's Taormina.

Can you guys tell me about the ease/quality of using the bypass hopper? I like a good decaf drink at night so this is a very important feature to me. Does it produce quality espresso and is it easy to access/clean, etc?

A A Wendy,
The bypass doser is on the top of the machine, but at the very front of it. Getting to it is very very easy. Considering that it drops directly into the brew group, you would only need to wipe out the shoot once in a while, as cleaning the brew group is part of the simple general maintenance of the machine. While you don't have control over the grind of the coffee (unless you are grinding the decaf yourself), the machine still brews the coffee the same way it would beans from the built in grinder.

I love my new Accademia! Just wondering, though, how it may compare with the Jura Capresso J9 or S9. I've seen the video review on the WLL web site (for the J9). Seems like a great machine, too. I'm wondering if it truly can get the frothed milk hot enough for a latte with just the push of a button. Also, just a general comparison with the Accademia. Thanks

I enjoy using all three machines, they are are easy to use, good looking machines and have options for one touch cappuccinos! The pricing on the Gaggia is significantly better. Enjoy you new Accademia!

I loved the Accademia for the short period I owed it. The only reason I returned it was that it could not get the milk hot enough for my latte and my wife's mocha. I would keep the carafe in the refrigerator and loved the idea of popping it into the machine and just pushing one button. The problem was that I could only get the mile about 110 degrees at best and that was really from the coffee. Compared to the usual 160 degrees for the milk and then adding the hot espresso makes the Accademia pale in comparison. To get hot coffee, I would have to then use the steam wand to get it to temperature. I have a Gaggia Titanium SS and have had it for years. Its not a totally automatic (I froth the milk with the wand and then push the button for the coffee) but it does have a large reservoir when compared to the Accademia.

Sanfam ♦ With the Accademia, one point to be aware of is that the frother will typically raise the temperature of the milk by 70F. This means that starting with refrigerated milk, you'll see nominal frothed milk temperatures of anywhere between 110F and 120F. To help correct this, you can either to allow the milk to warm up to room temperature before using the carafe's steaming function, use the built-in steam wand to pre-warm it to roughly room temperature or microwave the milk just a little bit to start with, or use room-temperature stored ultrapasteurized boxed milk. The latter is more typical of the European usage habits and is what the machine is configured to expect. Unfortunately, there is no way to correct for this in the settings.

Hi,
I purchased a new Accademia about 5 months ago and am happy with it overall. However, we recently noticed that the coffee seems a little bitter, even though we haven't changed the settings and are using the same kind of beans (illy). I'm getting the descaling message, but I got that same message less than a month after I last descaled the machine, so I assumed it was an error. Could that be the problem? If so, why would I need to descale so soon after already doing it? Also, I noticed that the machine does not give us any warning when it is out of beans. Is that fixable?

1

Vote

1

Sanfam ♦ The descaling message can pop up for a few reasons, both due to time since the last descaling and the amount of water dispensed. The machine will typically ask to be descaled after a certain amount of water has gone through it and should then reset both timers, but I have heard of circumstances where it appears that the (roughly) 3 month (unfiltered)/6mo (filtered) timer was not reset as part of the descaling cycle. I wouldn't worry about it too much unless it becomes a regular event.

As far as the bitterness is concerned, I'd suggest checking the grind setting. In the first few months of use, the burrs may wear down slightly and need some re-adjustment to compensate. You can also try adjusting the brewing temperature of the coffee, dialing it down slightly. Last, make sure the brew unit is fully rinsed clean and has nothing on the metal filter screen on the top-half. Any buildup there can cause weird brewing issues.

Regarding the grinder, this is typically associated with running it at very fine grind settings. Unlike older machines which had a much larger mechanical, measured doser, this machine intuits whether or not it has coffee by the speed at which the burr is spinning. If the grinding burr is slowed by the buildup of fine or oily grounds around it, fit can only assume that it is passing coffee, even when it isn't. Running the grinder at a coarser setting and using a dry roast are your best ways of combating this. No matter the case, DO NOT run any grinder cleaning products through these machines, as they can lead to all sorts of nasty clogs that would require a repair to correct.

I hope this helps!
