Features

Further proof that good things come in small packages, the Gaggia Brera is a fully equipped super-automatic espresso machine with a compact footprint that will leave you with plenty of counter space.

The Italian-made Brera has been thoughtfully designed to maximize user convenience. The dregs drawer, drip tray, and water tank all within reach, accessible from the front of the machine for quick and easy cleaning and maintenance. Gaggia has even simplified machine programming and beverage selection with the Brera. Push-button controls and an LED display with illuminated icons make it easy to navigate through your options, which are plenty with this Gaggia super automatic. Coffee aroma, strength, and volume are all customizable; additionally, the ceramic grinder takes advantage of the Gaggia Adapting System to adjust the rpm and guarantee the correct quantity of coffee grounds.

The Brera is an aesthetically pleasing machine with a contemporary stainless-steel front panel and chrome-plated accents; the side panels are available in black or silver to complement your décor. Functionally, the Gaggia Brera is great for entertaining as it can accommodate a wide variety of user preferences. If you prefer to serve guests pre-ground decaf coffee, or specialty coffee you can do so with the bypass doser. For special treats, macchiatos, cappuccinos, and lattes can be made easily and quickly, since the Brera comes equipped with a stainless steel Panarello wand and Rapid Steam Technology. Consider the Gaggia Brera if you’re a little short on space but don’t want to compromise on convenience and espresso quality. This model comes with a two-year limited warranty.

Grinding

An airtight, UV-proof 8.8oz hopper lets you safely store coffee beans. When you’re ready to grind, the Brera comes with a ceramic grinder to ensure grind consistency and reduce heat transfer—resulting in flavorful and aromatic coffee. For your convenience, the Gaggia Adapting System automatically adjusts grind time and rpm to deliver the desired coffee quantity, regardless of whether you’re using light, medium, or dark beans.

Bypass Doser

This Gaggia model comes outfitted with a bypass doser, allowing you to skip the grinding process and brew with pre-ground coffee. The bypass doser is a great option for decaf or flavored coffee drinkers.

Programmable Features

An Optidose function allows you to customize the aroma of your coffee; choose from light, medium, and strong brews. You can also make- an espresso or café lungo with the push of a button; beverage volume is programmable and the Gaggia Brera will “remember” your preferences for future use.

Water Tank and Filter

The Brera has a 1.2-liter water reservoir. A Mavea Intenza water filter (not included), with a four-stage filtration system, removes impurities and prevents scale buildup, to prolong the lifespan of your machine.

Ann Cummins I wnat to buy a new super automic espresso machine, black, top price of 1500. Must not clog with dark oily beans and the temperature of the coffee must be very hot. I have had three Jura machines in the last eight years and have to had two serviced because of the oily beans so I am not impressed with that brand and they said there was no way of encreasing the temp of the coffee. What would you recommend?
12:22 PM 5-15-12
Mark Jackson Ann, I would take a good look at the Gaggia Platinum swing or vision. They will brew a great espresso and it will be hot. I really have been impressed with the espresso from that machine. I think it will solve your problem of hot coffee as well as making a better espresso. Because it has ceramic burrs it also will handle a dark oily bean better. I still would not use a really dark bean anyways as it does not have a great flavor in my opinion.

John Palomaki Hi. I'm very interested in this machine based on its specs and positive reviews on this site. However, on Amazon.com, there are some reviews that point to flimsiness in the build, especially in the front panels. It also shows in some of your videos. Why is that? How sturdy are these machines?
9:36 PM 5-11-12
Mark Jackson John, I agree you should be interested as it does brew a good shot. I do not think it is a flimsy machine. It does have a lot of plastic, but so do many machines that cost much more. It certainly is not a heavy machine but it does and should work well as any other machine. It is compact and lightweight but I still think it is a great price for a very good machine. I hope this helps and thanks for the question.

John Panetta is there any warranty on the referbished Gaggia Brera (am i better off buying the new one...), do they ever break, and if they do, can i repair
7:00 PM 12-10-11
Mark Jackson John, The refurbished machines come with a 6 month warranty. New comes with a two year warranty. Right now with the pricing the way it is you may want to consider a new one. They do have a good track record and maintaining your machine and good soft water certainly helps. We can do a lot of trouble shooting over the phone and if need be it does need to come back to us for repair. I do have a lot of faith in the Gaggia brand and think you will be happy with the machine and the coffee it produces.

Deidre Myers I have had several grind and brew coffee makers over the past 5 years and thought I would move up to a super automatic. It appears from your reviews/blogs that you highly recommend the Brera; however I am concerned with its quality. A number of reviews on other sites are very unhappy with durability and longevity for its price (most having problems within a year). I would like to know what the average life of a Brera is (assuming 4-8 shots per day) and how you would rate the Brera to the Jura line -which has better overall quality reviews across sites. Even though you have a wonderful sale on Gaggia right now, I don't want to pay $670 for a machine for 2 years. BTW, your site is really very good and it is nice to see videos for reviews and demonstrations. Thanks! Deidre Myers
9:38 PM 12-3-11
Mark Jackson Deidre, I am glad you like our site and thanks for the question. The Gaggias have a long history of building quality machines and we have many customers who purchase multiple Gaggia machines for different locations. Regardless of brand, I think the best way to keep your machine working for a long time is to make sure you give it soft water or filtered water and keep up with the maintenance that is recommended. We have people that have done that and brewed in excess of 20,000 cups on Gaggia machines. So there is a lot of success with them and it does seem with the right care you should get years of good coffee. I do agree the Jura is a good machine as well. I would say 5 years at least would be a low average life on the machines.

Elizabeth Mancuso Is the dimension 17.5" the total depth of the machine including the tray? Approximately what is the depth of the box itself? I like all the features, is this the best compact machine under 1,000?
3:41 PM 10-10-11
Michael Rosso Elizabeth...Thanks for your interest in the Gaggia Brera. The 17.5" depth goes from the back of the machine to the front of the drip tray. The box measure 13.5"x16". This a great machine at a great price under $1000.00. Thanks.

P Bienert Loving my new Brera. One thing that's not clear - do I really need to keep the plastic dome over the grinders on? I noticed the manual and pictures show the grinders with no plastic dome. Is this just something added for our market? Thanks.
12:30 PM 9-3-11
Mark Jackson I would keep it on it helps keep the beans fresher as well as making sure nothing falls into the bean hopper.

Sharon Bickel I'm thinking about taking the plunge to an automatic espresso machine, and like the compact design of the Brera. I've been using a little Krups manual machine for years to make a large latte in the morning--first thing when I get up. So my question has to do with this-- say I walk into the kitchen at 6am--and I'm assuming the Brera is in standby mode.... How long does it take to warm up before I can brew and froth? Sharon PS I'm also confused about the water filter. Where does it go? Is it optional? I have well water at my home, so I'm thinking its probably a good idea, right?
10:23 PM 8-16-11
Mark Jackson I think you are making a wise choice. It will take about three minutes to warm up. It does not have a stand by mode nor does it need it. Just shut it off after you use it. The water filter , get the Mavea goes in the water tank and yes I would get the filter.

Max Newberry How does this machine compare with the Gaggia Titanium?
3:25 PM 7-26-11
Zack Smith Max, Both the Gaggia Brera and the Gaggia Titanium are great machines. The big difference between the two is the programing. On the Brera you have a back lit icon display screen and on the Titanium you have the full LCD display. The Titanium features 3 programmable buttons with temperature control while the Brera has 2 programmable buttons and no temperature control. Both machine will put out a great shot of espresso at a great temperature. If you have any other questions feel free to give me a call and we can figure out which machine would best suit you.

Heather Reagan I purchased this machine from you about 3 to 4 months ago. It has/had been wonderful! Easy to use, clean, etc., love it!! Anyway I have a problem that I haven't had luck on finding information on in the manual, and when i surf the internet I've not found my answer, but saw only people's complaints about Gaggia's tech support, so I wanted to try you first, I apologize now. Here's my problem, please let me know what you can tell me on resolving it. It's still under waranty, but I think it would be an easy fix if I knew what the problem was. It is not dispensing water. If you press the button for a shot, it grinds the coffee beans and you hear the brew group making the normal working sounds, then water runs only into the drip tray from inside the machine, then the ground are dropped dry into the puck container. On start up it sounds like it does it's normal pre rinse but no water comes out the dispenser it again somehow runs strait from inside the maching down into the drip tray. There are no cracks or damage and I haven't ever adjusted the grind knob in the hopper, nothing unusual happend to the machine. The manual gave a few things I could do and I did all except clean the dispensing unit, because I couldn't find in the manual how to disassemble that part of the machine. It almost seems like unless that's somehow horribly clogged, it's like just a water tube is disconnected in the back, but I'm afraid to start disassembling things that may void my warranty. I use it for 2 to 4 shots a day so it hadn't sat without use or anything. Please let me know any advice you can offer. My experience with wholelattelove has been superior, and everyone seems very knowledgable so I decided to try you before calling Italy! :)
4:04 PM 7-12-11
Mark Jackson You may want to try cleaning your brew group including the outlet and check ball. Give our tech support a call and they should be able to help. I will email you some instructions and that should help as well.

Robert Edge Currently have a Carreza that seems to be dying after a lot of use,so now debating the Brera or a Titanium. I am attracted to the 2 heating elements in the Titanium. My question is, does the Brera have any features superior to the Titanium? Is Brera's grinder better? etc..
9:54 PM 7-6-11
Michael Rosso Robert...Although the Gaggia Brera has only one heating element it produces steam very quickly, because of it's Thermoblock Boiler and Rapid Steam Technology. The grinder in the Brera has ceramic burrs, while the Titanium grinder has steel burrs. Thanks.

If you would like to know a little about the many types of espresso machines we sell, this would be a good video to get you started. This video covers the machines we sell and based on your lifestyle, what you like to drink, and ease of use. It will give you an overview of different espresso machines and help you determine which one best suits to your needs.

I would watch the video and focus on a particular kind of machine—prosumer, semi-automatic, and super-automatic to decide which kind is ideal for you. Then, you can go and look at individual models to get a better idea of exactly what you want. Of course, if you narrow it down to a few espresso machines and are still undecided, give us a call and we would be glad to help!

I’ve tried them all…Jura, Saeco, Delonghi. Decided with all the great sales on Gaggia I’d have to give them a try. Hands down the Gaggia Brera makes the best espresso that I’ve had out of any super-automatic I’ve owned. From what I understand about the Brera is that it has a superior grinder (ceramic burrs, self adjusting) then most of brands which apparently makes a big difference in the quality of your espresso. I can tell you one thing…the grinder is definitely much more quite then my Delonghi machine. Quite honestly the Delonghi I sounded like a jet airplane starting up every time the grinder ran. I would certainly recommend the Brera to anyone looking for a reasonably priced super automatic that makes great espresso.

One thing I learned on my trip to Italy is that Gaggia is pretty much a household name over there. Not being a huge fan of espresso and cappuccinos before my trip, I had the revelation while I was there that we as Americans are really missing the boat when it comes to drinking our good old drip coffee. That said, I knew nothing about making espresso and thought that I would have to become a trained barista and purchase a $3000 machine to make espresso that came even close to what I was getting in Italy. Being that I had a budget of less then $1000 dollars and my 55 hour a week work schedule kind of put a halt on me becoming a barista I decided to take my chance with the Brera. I can say with all honestly that the Brera makes as good, if not better, espresso then I was getting in Italy and believe it or not it literally is as easy as the press of a button. I’m extremely happy with my purchase and I’m now addicted to cappuccinos and haven’t had drip coffee at my house in the six months that I’ve owned this machine.

This is my third Gaggia super-automatic in as many years (not due to any problem with the machines, just due to my life circumstances). I'm an Army officer finishing up a deployment overseas, and I had the Brera shipped out to me just a few days after it became available on WholeLatteLove. Most of the larger bases over here have a coffee shop of some sort, but our tiny, remote base does not, and I couldn't stand the thought of a year with nothing but Army chow hall coffee. The small footprint is perfect, since I live in close quarters. It sits atop my mini-fridge in my room. It is super easy to use, right out of the box. Others have given a less-than-perfect rating of the instruction manual, but I found it to be clear enough (especially after the instruction manual for the Titanium, which was truly awful) and mostly unnecessary, as the Brera is SO easy to use. As with my other Gaggia machines, this makes fabulous espresso (and caffe lungo), and it's easy to make near-perfect microfroth with the panarello wand. I only have two minor complaints. First is that the steam wand is not as mobile as the ones on my other machines (Titanium and Platinum Vision), and that made it a little awkward at first getting the milk pitcher under it, but I'm used to it now. Second, the water reservoir is TINY. It's fine when I'm just making my own morning coffee, but when I'm making several for my colleagues, it's kind of a pain. Overall, though, I like this machine well enough that if it makes it back to the States, I'm thinking of keeping this one for my kitchen, and giving my Platinum vision to my cappuccino-loving sister-in-law.

I second the rest about the quality of coffee and the flexibility of the bypass, but I'll add a few suggestions for folks who have this thing who want something fast and delicious besides coffee: 1. Hot cocoa! Add a heaping tablespoon of dry mix and maybe a big of syrup to a mug. Pour in milk to about 5/6 full. Submerge the frother arm to above the metal line and steam the mix to a boil - don't let it foam up! Don't forget to stir regularly to get the mix regular. Garnish with whipped cream and a cookie, and or a twist, fold in some rumble mint schnapps! 2. Indian Chai: Try a similar prodedure as above using a metal tea ball loaded with a few crushed spices indluding a green cardamom pod, a few cloves, a bit of cinnamon bark, a few black peppercorns, maybe a bit of star anise and of course some fine black Indian tea like nilgiri. I get my ingredients dirt cheap at the local Indian grocer. Sometimes I'll put some sugar or sweetener in too before I steam. I them let it steep for another couple of minutes before drinking.

Wanted an espresso machine that was simple to use but still had some key features. Love having a bypass doser so that I can make my wife decaf so that she is less irritable. Really easy to steam milk with. Our counter space is very limited, so this smaller sized machine is perfect. Shots come out HOT...no more heating our drinks up in the microwave after we brew them like our old machine. Stainless steel front panel looks great against the black sides and top.

I must say Gaggia has put a lot of thought into this machine making it simple, easy to use and well built. Both the reservoir and dump box remove easily from the front of the machine to fill (in the case of the reservoir) or to empty (in the case of the dump box). This task is easy to accomplish, even though the machine sits under kitchen cabinets. The drip tray is large, can be easily removed without having to open the machine, and has baffles that help prevent spillage while emptying it. What a relief to know I shouldn’t have much to wipe up on the counters and floors. The bean hopper has a very nice rubber seal that fits around the lid to help keep the beans fresh. I also noticed that there is a disk in the hopper that shakes, making sure the beans fall into the grinder and don’t get backed up. The finest grind setting on the grinder produces a nice crema. The spout for the coffee is adjustable in height which helps prevent the crema from breaking up if it falls too far into the cup. The Brera short height fits nicely on the counter under the cabinets and allows easy access to the bean hopper. It is solidly built and has a great stainless steel front. Overall, very happy.

I recently bought this machine to replace my Saeco Vienna Plus. This machine makes a great shot of espresso and has great steaming ability. The steam wand makes it very easy to create micro foam. I wish that the steam wand had vertical motion but the horizontal motion works well and it is easy to steam and froth my milk. Another benefit of this machine is that the brew spout is adjustable so I can fit many different sized cups under the spout. The espresso out of this machine is great. It allows for the adjustment of the strength of the coffee. I prefer to have a medium strength while my wife tends to like a string brew. With this machine we can both adjust our preferences with the optidose function. I have had my machine for 3 weeks and i am very pleased with the performance and the overall ease of the machine.

I have had enough of my semi automatic. I am always on the move and the Brera allows me to be able to brew my morning shot with the push of a button. I can walk away from the machine and when I come back my shot is waiting for me. Another feature I enjoy is the simplicity of the steaming system. I was never able to create a great milk froth but with this machine it is easy. Glad I finally purchased a super automatic, it is defiantly a necessity for my life style.

We had waited a long time to get a machine and had tried the coffee out of a Brera at a friends house. We had also watched the videos and finally decided to get one. We LOVE it. We really like the ability to brew one cup at a time and there is really no need to brew a pot of coffee. I am getting to enjoy espresso and like the milk steaming if I want to try something a little more fancy

I have owned a few machines in the past. I was not really happy with the espresso out of my super automatic. The person I talked with on the phone asked me what I liked to drink and I said espressos. I said I was willing to try another super auto as my life is more hectic now with a family and time constraints. I got my machine and it was easy to get started with it. The salesperson was right - I really like my espresso and have been pleasantly surprised with the quality of it.

Just received my machine earlier this week. This is my first super automatic machine and i couldn't be happier. From out of the box to my first shot of espresso this machine does it all. The display screen is a great feature because it is fool proof. If you need water the machine will let you know. The adjustable brew spout is a great feature if you are using different sized cups. Steam feature is easy to use and makes it easy to produce great milk froth. I could not be happier with the machine and will recommended it to all my friends. Thanks Whole Latte Love!
