Gaggia for Illy Plus - Introduction

Features

The Gaggia for illy Plus single-serve espresso machine brews authentic Italian espresso using the world-famous iperEspresso capsules. The result of collaboration between two of Italy’s most respected coffee and espresso authorities, the Gaggia for illy does not disappoint. This unique machine utilizes an advanced two-phase extraction process that delivers consistent, crema-rich coffee and espresso every time.

Designed with the home-user in mind, the Gaggia for illy Plus has a small, space-saving frame and simple-to-use push button controls. Thanks to a Mavea water filtration system, your beverages will always taste fresh. This unit has a Pannarello steam wand for one-stop cappuccino and lattes. Additionally, the cup stand can be raised or lowered to accommodate different sized cup and glasses. Consider the Gaggia for illy Plus if you’re looking for a convenient coffee solution. This single-serve espresso machine comes with a one-year limited manufacturer’s warranty.

Brewing

The Gaggia for Illy Plus has a 15-bar pump and stainless steel boiler for quick operation. To brew, simply insert your choice of iperEspresso capsule and press the brew button, located at the top of the machine. A programmable beverage volume button allows you to customize drink sizes. The Gaggia for Illy Plus automatically prepares and dispenses the beverage right into your cup. Spent capsules are discarded into an iperEspresso container, capable of holding up to 12 capsules.

iperEspresso Capsules

Illy’s iperEspresso capsules are pre-measured and packaged for convenient brewing. Illy has created these capsules to yield rich, persistent crema that lasts up to three times longer than comparable capsules and pods. The iperEspresso system is used in some of the world’s most prestigious hotels, restaurants and cafes

Steaming and Frothing

The Gaggia for Illy Plus has a no-burn Pannarello steam wand, capable of creating steamed and frothed milk for cappuccinos and lattes as well as dispensing hot water for teas. The steam wand can be swiveled, allowing it to accommodate different cup sizes.

Water Management

The one-liter water reservoir utilizes a Mavea Water Filter, a four-stage system that purifies and removes tap water impurities for great tasting beverages. The water filtration system also helps to reduce mineral and scale buildup.

Housing and Construction

The Gaggia for Illy Plus has a shiny black body made of ABS plastic. The famous iperEspresso flower is carved into the front panel of the machine. A height adjustable cup holder lets you raise and lower the stand, as needed, to accommodate different cup sizes.

When I found out that some customers were having difficulty with their Gaggia for illy machines I knew I had to do something about it. People who drink coffee brewed with iperEspresso capsules expect it to be a quick and hassle free experience. That's exactly how it should be. In this blog I'd like to address the issue some customers have had with priming their machines before brewing.

The Gaggia For illy Plus Single Serve Espresso Machine is similar to other coffee machines that use capsules, cartridges, k-cups or E.S.E. pods in that it can't brew without first priming its water system. This simply means that it needs to take a bit of water from the reservoir before it can brew. You will know that the machine needs to be primed if the hot water and brew button lamps on top of the machine are flashing.

If your Gaggia For illy needs to be primed, simply follow these steps to get it ready to brew again:

  1. Fill the water reservoir located on the left side of the machine with fresh clean water and replace it. Be sure to push firmly from the bottom of the reservoir to make sure it's inserted all the way. If you push from the top, there is a good chance that it will not be inserted properly.

Gaggia for Illy reservoir must be fitted in correctly to work properly from www.wholelattelove.com

  1. On the top of the machine, the espresso and steam button lamps should both be blinking.

Ready to steam
  1. Place a cup underneath the hot water wand and turn the dial on top of the machine to the steam position. Be sure to turn the dial until it clicks.
  2. The machine will begin siphoning water from the reservoir into the boiler and through the wand.
  3. Once enough water has been siphoned, the steam button lamp will shut off and the espresso button lamp will stop blinking.
  4. Return the dial to the off position.
  5. Your machine is now primed and ready to brew.

If you want to use your Gaggia for illy to make steam, follow these simple instructions:

  1. Press and hold the steam button for a few seconds and release it, it should start blinking.
  2. Once the buttons' lamp stops blinking, the machine is ready to steam.
  3. To begin steaming, turn the dial to the steam position until it clicks.

  1. Please note that before steaming, the machine will purge the remaining water in the boiler through the wand so it is important to purge into the drip tray or an empty cup before steaming so that the water does not go into your milk.

Purge into empty cup or drip tray.
  1. When you are done steaming, return the dial to the off position and press and hold the steam button for a few seconds. When you release it, the steam button and espresso button lamps should both be blinking.
  2. Turn the dial back to the steam position until it clicks, the machine will siphon water from the reservoir to prime itself again.
  3. Once the steam button lamp turns off and the espresso button lamp stops blinking, return the dial to the off position.

Gaggia for illy switch clicked to off position from www.wholelattelove.com

  1. Your machine is now primed and ready to brew.

If the steam or espresso button lamps are ever blinking on your machine, it is important that you either turn it off or prime it. While the button lamps flash, the machine's boiler is heating up and if left unattended, it can easily blow a fuse if allowed to do so for too long. Also, to ensure that the water you are using is fresh, whenever you are finished using the machine, remove and empty the water reservoir and purge the remaining water in the boiler through the steam wand.

By following these steps, you can keep your Gaggia for illy machine brewing without a hitch.

The Gaggia for Illy Plus Single Serve Espresso machine is the culmination of a joint venture between two of Italy's most respected coffee authorities. At first, Gaggia and Illy may seem like strange bedfellows but, upon reflection, the partnership makes perfect sense. Gaggia brings to the table its vast engineering expertise and rich history. After all, it was Achille Gaggia who invented the first espresso machine. With over 50 years of espresso innovation, Gaggia has earned its place as the #1 manufacturer of home espresso machines in Italy.

Gaggia's partner, Illy, has an unmatched reputation for delivering premium coffee and espresso; in fact, 2 million cups of Illy coffee are served daily in Italy, a true testament to the brand's popularity. One of Illy's most significant contributions to the espresso industry has been its invention of the revolutionary iperEspresso system. Unlike most single-serve systems, iperEspresso capsules use a patented two-step extraction process to ensure maximum flavor, aroma and crema extraction. Since the brewing process is self-contained within the individual capsules, you won't run the risk of contaminating your machine with residual coffee. iperEspresso capsules are available in medium, dark and decaf roasts.

So, what do you get when you combine the efforts of Italy's leading espresso authorities? The Gaggia for Illy Plus, of course!

This groundbreaking machine is designed especially for the iperEspresso system and it brews espresso so good you won't believe your drink came from a capsule. It's one thing to streamline and simplify the brewing process, but it's rare for single-serve espresso to taste as good as its hand-brewed brethrens.

BrewingStandard Operating Procedure
Once you insert an iperEspresso capsule into the machine and press the brew button, the Gaggia for Illy will pre-infuse the coffee to bring forth its full flavor and aroma. The espresso will, then, be extracted and dispensed from the capsule's patented e-valve. Coffee is never exposed to the Gaggia for Illy Plus, so there's no post-brew cleanup to speak of and your drink is guaranteed to be completely pure. After your beverage has been extracted, the Gaggia for Illy Plus automatically discards the capsule into a dedicated container, so you're free to simply walk away and enjoy your espresso.

Frothing MilkSteam it up
Like all Gaggia machines, the Gaggia for Illy Plus has pretty impressive steaming and frothing capabilities. In fact, Gaggia didn't scrimp on this single serve unit; it comes outfitted with the famous no-burn Pannarello steam wand. You'll be able to create rich steam and froth for lattes and cappuccino; it's the best of both worlds—the convenience of a single-serve machine with the steaming capabilities of a semi automatic.

The Details
Now that you have an idea of what the Gaggia for Illy Plus can do, here's how it does it...This machine is powered by a 15-bar pump and robust stainless steel boiler. The brew button is programmable to allow the Gaggia for Illy Plus to adapt to your preferences. You can set the brewing duration and subsequently drink volume by pressing and holding the brew button; this is one of the unique features that distinguishes the Gaggia for Illy Plus from its peers. Also exclusive to the Gaggia for Illy Plus is the adjustable cup holder and drip tray; it can be raised or lowered to make room for cups and mugs of all sizes. Water purification comes courtesy of a Mavea filter, which removes minerals from the contents of the one-liter reservoir to prevent scale buildup.

Gaggia For Illy Plus with iperEspresso capsulesIf you've ever wanted to try a single-serve espresso machine, take the jump with the Gaggia for Illy Plus. The compact footprint of this machine makes it perfect for home use or stash it in your desk at the office and be prepared when a caffeine emergency strikes! Laura Jager I purchased this machine as a graduation present to myself this last December and I am not disappointed. The quality of esspresso and the ease of use of the machine is fantastic. Make sure you stock up on the capsules because if you're like me you are going to turn into a espresso/cappuccino junkie. I love the fact that there is virtually no clean up and every shot of espresso turns out perfect. My college age daughter also enjoyed using the machine over Christmas and would love one in her dorm.

If you would like to know a little about the many types of espresso machines we sell, this would be a good video to get you started. This video covers the machines we sell and based on your lifestyle, what you like to drink, and ease of use. It will give you an overview of different espresso machines and help you determine which one best suits to your needs.

I would watch the video and focus on a particular kind of machine—prosumer, semi-automatic, and super-automatic to decide which kind is ideal for you. Then, you can go and look at individual models to get a better idea of exactly what you want. Of course, if you narrow it down to a few espresso machines and are still undecided, give us a call and we would be glad to help!

Solid Office Machine

Purchased this for use in my office, where I didn't want to deal with the mess of cleaning coffee grinds and shuttling back and forth from water source too often. Very convenient machine and it brews a nice espresso. Compact footprint. No brainer to use. Also, easy to program volume per shot, so you can dial in strength of brew. Froths well, though I don't use the steamer that often. My only complaints are: (a) the Illy coffee pods - Whole Latte Love stocks them all, but otherwise they are not widely available retail even after being on the market for at least a couple of years now, and (b) steam/froth function is finicky in that if you don't actually steam soon after the machine gets to steam temp it will want you to purge and get it back down to brew temp. Otherwise, great machine.

How Long Have I Been Using This Product?

More than 1 year

What's Best About this Product?

Convenience, brews a good espresso, large water container, looks cool in a Darth Vader sort of way.

The Coffee I've Tried With This Product:

iperespresso pods. I like the new Ethiopian and Brazil roasts the best.

Some Improvements I Would Recommend for This Product:

This espresso maker rocks. It puts out some of the best coffee I have ever had. My first machine a few years ago was a Fancis Francis, which had no crema at all and was a pain to clean. This unit pumps out shot after shot with virtualy no clean-up. I love the capsules. They stay fresh and are so easy to use. I only thing I don't like is the steam wand, as it takes too much time and has to be cleaned, so I just nuke the milk. I might purchase a stand alone milk frother in the future to make my life easier. This is an awesome little unit, and for the money it's a great way to get started in espresso making.

Excellent espresso with classic illy's taste and an exceptionally rich and persistent crema. The convenience is unparalleled. I especially like the fact that the espresso comes out of the capsule directly, not through a machine part. This means there is practically no clean up needed. The steam wand also worked great, although it does need cleaning. Overall, am very pleased with the machine, although would have preferred something other than the cheap plastic finish.

Awesome product. I've always used and loved Illy's pods, but the capsules with this gaggia machine gave truly outstanding espresso's. The crema has to be seen and tasted to be believed especially when it comes out the same time after time with a push of a button. The easy (cant be easier than none) cleanup was a pleasant bonus. All around just it.

I just received the Gaggia for Illy Plus as an early X-mas present. So far, I love it and am very pleasantly surprised with the taste of the capsules & how easy it is to use. I have been looking for a simple home machine & I really appreciate good coffee and was worried I would be sacrificing the flavor. I have several friends who have the Nespresso citiZ machine but personally I was not a huge fan of the coffee and not loving the "look" of the machine either. I prefer the taste of Illy Capsule coffee (again, it's personal taste) and I like how the machine looks and it does not take up a lot of space. I can not stress enough how easy it is to use and I also like being able to control frothing the milk- sometimes I want less foam...so, if you are looking for a simple home expresso machine and you don't mind using a wand to froth milk, I recommend it.

How does this machine and illy capsules compare to the Nespresso ones in terms of coffee quality? For the same price I am also looking at the C100 and milk frother which would accomplish the same thing. I'm sure it all comes down to a matter of taste, but I don't have an opportunity to try both in my area before purchasing. Any suggestions?

mjackson ♦ Max,

They are both very good coffees. I do think with the Nespreso you have a wider variety to choose from. Many people really like the convenience of the aerocinno from Nespresso. It does a nice job and is easy to use and clean. The Gaggia steam is more manual but also gives you more control. As far as taste I think the Illy may have a better taste but limited in choice.

What does "refurbished" mean, actually?

0

0

mjackson ♦ Franca,

Thanks for the question. We do get asked a lot what exactly that means. Refurbished means that it has been returned within thirty days of being purchased. For some reason the customer who purchased the machine has decided it is not the right machine for them. It is sent back, checked out and cleaned up, then it is sold as refurbished. So it is very much like new. It certainly is a good deal.

It is a nice machien capable of producing great drinks. It is easy to clean with Cleancaf or Dezcal made by Urnex. You just dissolve the solution in a cup of hot water and add to your tank then run it through the group and the steam arm. It is pretty easy to maintain. Let us know if you have any more questions.

I have watched videos of all types of machines. I have a keurig coffee maker and like it for convenience, but also use a french press. Saw the gaggia platinum v on the sales and it looks like a good deal. When you adjust it to make a larger drink(longer pull) will it taste like a better cup of coffee? I like a cappuccino and latte sometimes, but if I'm not really into flavored syrups, etc. can't decide if an espresso machine is really what I want. Suggestions? BTW it's fun to learn about.

Michael Rosso ♦ Phil...Thank you for your interest in the Gaggia Platinum Vogue. If you adjust it for a longer pull you are increasing the size of your espresso shot. If you want to make a drink that is more like a cup of coffee you can make what is called a Cafe Americano (they do taste great). To make a Cafe Americano brew your espresso shot into your coffee cup then add hot water from your steam wand to your coffee cup. The Gaggia Platinum Vogue would allow you to do this. If you have any further questions please free to call us at 1-888-411-5282 option 1. Happy brewing.
