General Specifications

Colors: Silver
Size: 14.6"H x 12.5"W x 16.4"D

Features

The Gaggia Platinum Swing has a simple exterior, underscoring the impressive technology housed within. This model from Gaggia uses Rapid Steam Technology to provide ample power when switching back and forth between brewing and steaming. The boiler is made of stainless steel for ultimate heat retention and durability, and steam from the boiler is even used on the Gaggia Milk Island to make automatic cappuccinos and lattes.

Programming comes in the form of a click wheel similar to the one you use to program your iPod. Move your finger around the click wheel to scroll through options, which are displayed on the digital LCD screen above the circle. This digital LCD screen ensures that you’re always aware of programming options and what’s going on inside the machine, making the Gaggia Platinum Swing a straightforward machine no matter how much experience you have with super automatics.

Features & Benefits: Coffee

Control Panel Design

The digital LCD screen is located directly above the click wheel, and it displays instructions and programming options. The click wheel is the center of the control panel, and has a coffee cup in the center – this is the confirmation buttons. A column of buttons to the left of the wheel consists of a top button to reach the programming menu (it has an M on it) and a bottom button for coffee dosage and bypass doser (it has a coffee bean icon). The column to the right of the wheel has a top button with an icon of a steam cloud and activates steaming, a bottom button with an icon of a water droplet to dispense hot water.

Programming

So what are your options, anyway? You can adjust the volume of your drink, quantity of coffee to be brewed, coffee temperature, and pre-infusion. You can also set the menu language, energy saving mode, water hardness, and rinsing cycle. To keep your machine clean, you have access to the water filter menu, the descaling menu, and you can wash the brew group automatically.

Brew a Single or a Double

Use the click wheel to scroll through your coffee options – espresso, short coffee, or long coffee. Press the confirmation button once to brew one of that beverage, or press it twice for a double.

Rapid Steam Boiler System

The Gaggia Platinum Swing uses a stainless steel boiler that assures Rapid Steam function, so you can switch back and forth between brewing and steaming without downtime. Stainless steel is known for its heat retention properties, as well as for its durability.

Bean Hopper

The clear plastic bean hopper holds 8.8 oz of beans, so they’re always fresh and ready for your next brew. You can easily monitor bean levels just by looking in, or the Platinum Swing will alert you on the display screen when it runs low. Beans travel from the hopper to the ceramic burr grinder – this kind of grinder uses a stationary burr and a rotating burr. Beans are drawn in between and crushed consistently and quietly. To change the fineness of the grind, use the included tool to adjust the grind settings to coarse, medium, or fine.

Bypass Doser

For those time when you would prefer a blend other than what is in the doser, you can pour pre-ground coffee into the bypass doser and brew using that instead. Select your drink (espresso, short coffee, or long coffee) and press the coffee button until the pre-ground option appears on the display screen. Press the confirmation button, add a measured scoop of ground coffee into the bypass doser, and press the confirmation button again.

Espresso Plus System

The Espresso Plus System allows you to change the strength of your drink – even while you’re brewing. Turn the knob located on the cup dispenser to the left for a milder brew, and to the right for a more intense drink.

Opti-Dose System

Another way to change the strength of your drink is with Gaggia’s Opti-Dose System, which allows you to vary the amount of ground coffee in each shot from 7-10.5 grams. To change the dosage, press the coffee bean button and use the click wheel to scroll through your options.

Cup Warmer

Warm cups are an important part of a well-brewed espresso. They help preserve the temperature of the espresso, as well as preserve the layer of golden crema on top. The Platinum Swing’s cup warmer is heated using residual heat from the boiler, so when the boiler warms up, your cups warm up too. Placing your cups on the cup warmer also creates a great display in your kitchen or workstation.

Features & Benefits: Frothing and Hot Water

Frothing and Steaming

Use the Pannarello steam wand to froth and steam milk to perfection – just press the steam button and open the steam knob to the steam setting. The display screen will read “Brewing steam” as steam flows from the wand. Close the knob to stop the steam, and remember to wipe the wand down with a damp cloth after you’re done.

Hot Water

The steam wand also functions as a hot water dispenser – great for soup, tea, or an americano. Just press the hot water button, open the steam knob to the steam setting, and hot water will be dispensed. While hot water is being dispensed, the display screen will read, “brewing hot water.” To stop the flow of water, close the steam knob.

Gaggia Milk Island

For automatic steaming and frothing, the Gaggia Milk Island is a convenient option. It connects directly to your steam system, and froths up to 13.5 oz of milk at a time. Just turn the steam knob to the "Milk Island" setting to froth and steam.

Features & Benefits: Care, Maintenance & Other

Water System

The 57 oz water reservoir is removable from the back of the machine – just slide it out like a drawer. To keep your drinks tasting fresh, remember to rinse out the reservoir with mild soap and warm water before refilling it. The display screen will let you know when you’re running low on water.

Included Aqua Prima Water Filter

If your tap water is adulterated with chemicals and sediments, your espresso will taste of those impurities. Rather than recommend you use expensive bottled water, the Gaggia Platinum Swing comes with an Aqua Prima Water Filter, so your water tastes its best and you don’t have to descale as frequently. The machine will alert you when descaling is necessary.

Drip Tray and Cover

You can move the drip tray up and down to accommodate cups of different sizes – from 3” to 4.5”. The drip tray should be removed and cleaned when the machine alerts you to do so.

Removable Brew Group and Spent Grounds Box

Open the door on the right side of the machine to remove the brew group and spent grounds box. The display screen will alert you when the grounds counter is full, so you can empty it and rinse the container. The brew group can also be removed, and should be rinsed under running water to remove coffee oils and residue. You should also run a brew group rinse cycle about once a month – just press the menu button, scroll through your options and select “maintenance,” then select “group wash.”

Included Accessories

The Gaggia Platinum Swing comes with an Aqua Prima water filter, ground coffee measuring scoop, power cable, grinder adjustment key, water hardness tester, and lubricant for the brew group.

Kathy Tangney I am considering the Gaggia Platinum Swing. From looking over your website describing this machine, I understand it contains a water purification filter which must be changed occasionally. Our kitchen has a reverse osmosis water filtration system, so the water I would be using is already filtered. Does that mean I can use the Gaggia Platinum Swing without changing the filter? Thanks - Kathy Tangney

Michael Rosso Kathy...Thank you for your interest in the Gaggia Platinum Swing. Using the filter in the water reservoir is optional, and you would not need to use it when using RO water. Thanks

Sara Hylwa I was wondering for how long the sale on this product is going to continue? Thank you in advance for your answer. - Sara
2:22 PM 3-26-12
Mark Jackson Sara, We will honor the price for at least two weeks. It should continue for a while. The good thing is we always have sales and Gaggia is usually a featured item. It is a great machien and brews an amazing espresso.

jsilver Just got a Platinum Swing... gotta question about the crema... How do I get a thicker and "creamier" crema on the espresso?
11:29 AM 3-17-12
Mark Jackson J, There is a few ways to adjust the machien to get a better Crema. Use good beans like Lavazza, set the grinder at the finest setting make sure you follow the instructions. Set the grinder while it is running. Then set the dose at maximum. You want to brew a little over 2 ounces in order top get the best tasting shot. It should taste great at these settings. If you are not getting Crema at this point I would suggest seeing about different beans or call us for some help.

Jordan Williams The glass carafe for my milk island cracked and is unusable. Is there a way to purchase just the carafe without replacing the whole milk island?
9:30 PM 3-10-12
Mark Jackson Jordan, If you call our technical department they should be able to help you. I am not sure if it is available separately. They may be able to get you one of you can give them a call.
8:43 AM EST 3-12-12

Ian Drachman how do I make my coffee thicker, like I get at a professional coffee bar? The flavor is fine, but the coffee is thin, even though the crema is fine.
9:09 PM 2-23-12
Mark Jackson Ian, There are many things to adjust all within keeping in mind the limitations of the machine. You should set the grind at the finest setting, Have the strength at maximum and for an espresso only brew about 1.75 - 2 ounces at max. If you do this you should get a good espresso. If you brew more than that you will be getting away from brewing an espresso and really be making more like a regular cup of coffee. The maximum dose is 10.5 grams and that will let you make a 2 oz espresso that will taste right. Try changing your settings and let us know how it works out.

Frank Kostolitz What is the difference (other then the display) between the Gaggias Vogue, Swing and swing up?? Thank you, Frank
10:39 AM 2-16-12
Mark Jackson Frank, There are some differences as you can imagine. The vogue has some great features such as ceramic burrs in the grinder. It will brew a great espresso as they all will. It does not have a bypass feature so you can only brew what is in the hopper. The Swing models have rapid steam, temperature control, and more programming features well such as also setting the menu language, energy saving mode, water hardness, and rinsing cycle. The swing up also has a motorized drip tray that can move up and down. I hope this helps and let us know if you have any questions.

J. Michael Crawford My Platinum Swing just stopped pumping water through the system. It tries, the pump runs, nothing comes out, and then there's a big "psssst" at the end of the cycle. The brew group was stuck with coffee crust, which I've cleaned out, and now the brew group works smoothly. But no flow. I just ran a descale two weeks ago, including two cycles of cleaning the brew group with tablets in the bypass doser. The machine's flow has petered down to a few drops a few times in the past, but it always cleared up after a several cycles. I think it's possible the check ball is stuck, so started to take the brew group apart as per instructions for the Platinum Vision on this site, but I don't see how to find the check ball. Do the machines have different brew groups? Thanks for any help you can provide.

Mark Jackson Mike, I was getting ready to answer when you answered your own question. I would get a mavea water filter to help prevent all of this stuff from happening. Here is you answer as well so I will delete you next post and please let us know if we can help. J. Michael Crawford (mcrawf@nuomo.com) posted on Gaggia (gaggia@wholelattelove.com) Never mind! The top of the delivery spout comes off with the two chrome screws, and then it comes apart if you twist the three-finned top counter-clockwise. I disassembled the assembly, cleaned the metal pieces and o-rings (though I could find no residue or grounds), replaced everything, and the machine works. If you've already started an answer, I apologize.

Lindsey Quick Is the steaming wand fixed or can you move it to the side to place in a Venti sized cup?
10:40 AM 10-8-11
Mark Jackson Lindsey, You can use up to a 20 ounce steaming pitcher. It does have some movement but not enough to be able to maneuver a 24 ounce cup under the steam wand. This is a machine that works well and makes great shots. You should watch our videos on it and see what it is all about.
8:52 AM EST 10-10-11

David Ching How does this compare to the JURA Capresson Impressa ENA5? I really like the idea of the auto milk steamer/frother, but do they really work. How hard would it be to do the froth/steam via the wand instead?
10:10 AM 8-19-11
Mark Jackson David, The Platinum will make a better shot and it has ceramic burrs so it will also handle a darker bean better. I like using the steam wand because of the control. But the milk Island certainly makes your life easier. I do like the Gaggia for what it offers as far as shots go as well as the different milk options.
8:33 AM EST 8-23-11

Amy Kashiwa Does it come with a 1 year Extended Warranty or a 2 year warranty? I see both on your website. Also do you know if it will accommodate a taller to-go cup, about 6 1/2 inches. I have owned a Capresso C1500 and would like some guidance about the next machine I purchase. This one seems to have very good reviews.
11:23 AM 6-26-11
Mark Jackson Amy, That would be a little taller then what the machine can accommodate. It can take a little over 5 inches of cup height. It is a very good machine and makes a very good espresso for a super auto.

Milk IslandGaggia Milk Island Review:

What I like about this product:

  • Speed
  • The time it takes to have hot, frothed milk with the milk island is only about a minute.
  • Cleaning - If using throughout the day, simply rinse the carafe out and fill with regular water, then run some steam through the milk island with clean water instead of milk. When done for the day, the milk island can easily be disassembled and rinsed off with warm water in the sink.
  • Separate From Machine - Some milk frothing devices siphon milk through the machine which can cause problems if not cleaned properly. The milk island is completely separate from the machine and should you forget to clean the milk island over extended periods of time or the device some how gets damaged you are only replacing the milk island and not a $1000+ machine.

What I would change about this product:

  • Capacity - The carafe on the milk island only hold enough milk to make approximately two regular cappuccinos.
  • Initial Assembly

The base that the milk island sits on attaches to the bottom of the machine which can be awkward when first installing the device. I recommend leaving the milk island attached once it is on.

Customer Match/ Recommended Use:

The Gaggia Milk island is a wonderful accessory to the Gaggia Platinum series machines. The milk island produces good froth with little effort and is recommended for those that do not want to steam their milk manually. Due to its ease of use and hands free operation, the milk island is also very helpful when entertaining and making many beverages in a row.

If you would like to know a little about the many types of espresso machines we sell, this would be a good video to get you started. This video covers the machines we sell and based on your lifestyle, what you like to drink, and ease of use. It will give you an overview of different espresso machines and help you determine which one best suits to your needs.

I would watch the video and focus on a particular kind of machine—prosumer, semi-automatic, and super-automatic to decide which kind is ideal for you. Then, you can go and look at individual models to get a better idea of exactly what you want. Of course, if you narrow it down to a few espresso machines and are still undecided, give us a call and we would be glad to help!

Great machine, excellent espresso and cappuccino, great personalized customer service from wholelattelove. Everyone at our small office in Columbus, Ohio loves the incredible coffee and espresso. The grinder is quieter than most. Machine is very easy to clean. The milk island works well (shuts off automatically too) but it is kind of a hassle to clean; I prefer to manually steam milk with the steam spout. Recommend using distilled water -- if you can afford this machine, you can afford to use distilled water; maybe even buy a water distiller.

This was absolutely one of the best "toys" I have ever purchased. I love espresso drinks and use this machine daily (often multiple times a day) and from the beginning was incredibly easy to use and makes great coffee/espresso! I have NO experience as a barista or otherwise and it took me less than a week to have a "perfect latte".

After several years happily using our Saeco Incanto, that machine gave up the ghost. We chose this replacement for several reasons, among them reviews about ease of use, compact footprint, attractive appearance, and the milk island. Over all after a couple months of daily use, we are extremely satisfied with this machine. It is extremely easily adjustable for different strengths and amounts of coffee. It heats up very fast, and stays hot. It does take a little time to get used to the arrangement of buttons and the Ipod-like wheel for making some selections. At the same time, the stand-by feature is wonderful. The platform which raises and lowers to accommodate different sizes of cup is great. We decided not to spend the extra on the automatic version of that feature, and I don't regret it. The steaming wand is excellent, and steams and froths almost effortlessly. This machine looks great, and takes up a relatively small space for its features. The design allows the machine to roll forward or back, and to swivel left or right extremely easily, which makes filling the water tank and cleaning the drip tray or brew group easy. Even cleaning is far easier and faster than our previous Saeco. The brew group is easily accessible, as are all the necessary parts. On the other hand the milk island is a disappointment. We have never gotten the promised results from this. The milk island has to be scrupulous cleaned to work at all, and even then the results are disappointing. Like others we find the water tank capacity to be a little on the small side, but in my view it's a good trade off.

We have had it for 3.5 months and both my wife and I are very pleased. I use in the AM for my morning coffee for the road. She uses it for her cappucino in the morning and then we both use it for an evening espresso. The coffee quality is much better than my old machine. It is easy to use and it has what they call a Milk Island for frothing. This Milk Island is a really cool invention that makes the hottest milk that I have ever had from any automatic frothing system. The water filter is also a nice addition, it works like the Brita filter that I have at home. The water supply pulls out from the side and is easy to get at. The gridner is really quiet and beans do not get stuck in the grinder like my old machine. I'm just happy that my new machine is so much nicer than my old!!!

Question Submitted by TechStarS S
What is the E. Plus system? click to open/closeopen and close answer
  • The E. Plus system adds an extra level of control by letting you increase or decrease the flow rate of your espresso. A decreased (restricted) flow will give you a stronger, more robust flavor, since the water and grounds are infusing for a longer period of time. If you have a very robust bean, but want a mild brew, you simply turn the dial counterclockwise so the water flows faster.

Question Submitted by TechStarS S
How do I make a hotter cup of coffee? click to open/closeopen and close answer
  • You can increase the temperature of your drink anywhere from 10-20 degrees by adjusting the machine’s temperature settings and ensuring that all of your brewing components are preheated properly:

    1. If your machine has adjustable temperature, enter into the machine’s menu mode and choose the temperature setting you want.
    2. While in menu mode, verify that the rinse mode is turned on. The rinse feature runs a quick dose of hot water through the brew spout upon startup. This helps to warm up the internal components of the machine, and also rinses away any coffee build-up that might alter the taste of your espresso.
    3. Run water through your hot water spout and into your cup. This accomplishes two things- It helps to preheat the internal components and it heats the cup as well.

If you're talking espresso, and using ceramic cups, pre-heat your cup. 1 oz of espresso in a cold cup = 1 cup of tepid espresso.

Question Submitted by Tech Kathy
My steam wand still heats the milk but it won't froth click to open/closeopen and close answer
  • There are several possible causes of this problem. Please follow the instructions below to solve it.

    Solution 1

The most common solution to this problem is to ensure that the inner piece of the frothing wand is properly in place. To do this, follow these instructions:

Note: Your wand may look slightly different than the wand pictured in the diagram, but the same instructions apply.

    1) Remove the black plastic outer sleeve of the Frothing Wand (some models have a metal outer sleeve). If done correctly, the “sleeve” has been removed, but the inner wand with red or black washer, is still connected to the machine.
    2) The part of the sleeve assembly that you have removed is comprised of 2 pieces, the frothing sleeve and the center piece. The center piece can be seen if you look into the top of the wand.
    3) Using a pencil (eraser end), or similar shaped object, push down on the center piece until an audible “click” is heard. The “click” means that the centerpiece is back into the proper position. When in the proper position, the center piece visibly sticks out the bottom of the sleeve about ¼-inch. It looks like a bird beak.
    4) Now put the sleeve back on the machine and your machine should be ready to froth again.
Note: To prevent clogging, purge the steam wand after frothing milk and wipe off any excess milk with a wet cloth. We still recommend a thorough cleaning periodically as the milk can still build up inside the wand. The wand can easily be taken totally apart for cleaning.

    Solution 2

The second most common solution to this problem is that the pinhole near the tip of the Frothing Wand has become clogged. If this happens, the machine will heat the milk but no froth will form. To fix this, follow these instructions:

    1) Remove the black plastic outer sleeve of the Frothing Wand (some models have a metal outer sleeve). If done correctly, the “sleeve” has been removed, but the inner wand with red or black washer, is still connected to the machine.
    2) Hold the Frothing Wand in your hand so you can see the top portion clearly (the top being the part that usually attaches to the machine, and the bottom is the part that goes into the milk).
    3) There is a single pinhole on the side of the Frothing Wand about ¼-inch down from the top. It is very small—literally a pinhole. You will need to clear this out. A sewing needle or pushpin is small enough to fit through. Make sure this is thoroughly cleaned out.

    Solution 3

If the first two solutions do not work, you may need to replace your frothing wand. Visit our Parts page below to purchase a replacement.

As long as you are purging and wiping down immediately you should not have to remove after every use. I’d recommend soaking it in a dish detergent once a week for a ½ hr or so and then rinsing thoroughly. Hope this helps. Happy Brewing.

If you purge the wand and wipe it down immediately does it still need to be removed and cleaned after every use?

Question Submitted by Michael Yard
Why does my machine keep asking me to empty the dump box? click to open/closeopen and close answer
  • Your machine is designed to count how many shots you’re brewing and then tell you to empty the dump box when it reaches the maximum shot count. The machine does not weigh the dump box or use any sensors to verify if it is in fact full, so if you empty the dump box before it asks you to, it will continue counting.

For example, if it reads "empty dump box" when there is only one puck in there, then you simply need to reset the machine so it can begin counting your shots properly. To do this, just remove the dump box while the machine is on and giving you the "empty dump box" message. Then, leave it out for about 30 seconds so that the machine knows to reset the count to 0. Finally, replace the dump box and the message should go away.

If this does not solve the problem, contact us and we will help you test the micro switch to make sure it is working properly.
