Features

The Jura Capresso Impressa J5 is one of the most stylish super automatic espresso machines on the market today, with a silver plastic panels, chrome accents, and your choice of black or white side panels. It puts Jura Capresso’s innovative espresso technology at your fingertips with 4 programmable beverage buttons, an adjustable conical burr grinder, pre-infusion cycle, coffee strength settings, and more. A stainless steel-lined thermoblock ensures water is always ready for brewing or steaming, and the 18-bar pump will get a great extraction from your espresso every time you brew. Customizing all of the machine’s settings is made easy by the red LED display, guiding you through programming step-by-step in the language of your choice. This display will also let you know when you need to refill the bean hopper or water reservoir, run a descaling cycle, or empty the used coffee drawer.

If you love cappuccinos, lattes, and other café-style drinks, the Jura Capresso Impressa J5 will serve as your own personal coffee shop. You have the choice to manually froth or steam your milk using the patented Dual Frother Plus wand, or you can have the J5 automatically steam or froth for you using the included FrothXpress. Both produce outstanding results in just moments, making the J5 an indispensable machine when entertaining guests who love espresso. You can even customize the coffee spout when brewing 1 or 2 cups by moving the dispensing nozzles closer together or farther apart, depending on your needs. Cleaning up is also a breeze, with a removable dump box, drip tray, and 71oz water reservoir. A Clearyl water filter is also included with the J5 to help prevent scale build-up and to keep your espresso tasting its best.

Getting Familiar

To guide you through brewing, programming, and maintenance, the J5 has a red LED display.

The display is located right above the beverage buttons on the front of the machine that control hot water, 1 espresso, 2 espresso, steam, 2 coffees, and 1 coffee dispensing. There is an icon next to each of the buttons, so remembering what each button controls won’t require a manual whenever you brew. All of these buttons come with pre-programmed liquid volume, strength, and temperature settings that are outlined in the product manual, but they can easily be reprogrammed to meet your tastes. The only setting that isn’t controlled by a button or dial on the front of the machine is the conical burr grinder fineness setting. To change the fineness, simply turn the adjustment knob in the bean hopper while it is running.

A rotary dial and push button on the top of the machine let you navigate all programming and brewing functions on the J5. To enter programming mode, simply press and hold the push button at the center of the rotary dial until the LED display reads “Rinse.” Then, turn the rotary dial to scroll through the different features and settings. When the J5 is not in programming mode, you can manually override the beverage button settings on a cup-to-cup basis using the rotary dial and push button.

Getting Ready

When the Jura Capresso Impressa J5 arrives at your home, you’ll be brewing after a few simple start-up procedures.

After you take the J5 out of the box, place it on a sturdy counter, plug it in, turn on the main power switch by the power cord, and then press the “On” button located on the top of the machine. Next, follow the instructions for activating the Clearyl water filter and priming your machine as detailed in the instruction manual. This process takes only a few minutes and will prepare the internal pump for brewing. Finally, fill the 71oz water reservoir with fresh, cold water, fill the hopper with your favorite beans and you’re ready to brew!

Making Your Drink

With the Jura Capresso Impressa J5, you can easily customize your coffee to meet your specific taste.

With just a push of any of the programmable beverage buttons, the J5 will brew the coffee size, strength, and temperature of your choice and dispense it right into your cup. You have the choice to brew using the presets for each button or to manually override the settings for just one cup. You can also program the beverage buttons to meet your specific tastes, so every time you brew, you get a consistent shot made just the way you like it.

To enter programming mode, press and hold the button at the center of the rotary dial on top of the machine. The word “Rinse” will appear on the LED display, and then turn the dial clockwise so the word “Buttons” appears. Press the center button to select this option and the words “Select Button” will flash on the display. Press the beverage button you would like to program and the LED display will then guide you though programming the strength, liquid volume, and temperature settings. You can choose from 4 coffee strengths (mild, normal, strong, xstrong), 2 coffee temperatures (normal, high), and liquid volume in .5oz increments up to 8oz per cup. When you choose the 2 espresso or 2 coffee buttons, the liquid volume you set will be doubled.

If you have guests over who prefer decaf coffee, or if you would just like to enjoy a late evening latte, the Jura Capresso J5 features a bypass doser. This allows you to brew using pre-ground coffee, so you can make an espresso using beans other than the ones in your hopper.

Topping it Off: Frothing & Steaming

The Jura Capresso Impressa J5 gives you the option to manually or automatically froth milk for cappuccinos, lattes, and more.

The J5 comes with both a Dual Frother Plus and a FrothXpress. The Dual Frother Plus is a 2-position steam wand that lets you manually froth or steam milk for café-style drinks. When the sleeve on the steam wand is up, it will create steamed milk and when the sleeve on the steam wand is down, it will create frothed milk. To start the steaming process, immerse the Dual Frother Plus in a pitcher of cold milk and press the steam button on the control panel once. In a few seconds, the boiler will heat up to steam temperature and the LED display will flash “Ready.” Press the steam button once again to start dispensing. The button is set to steam for 20 seconds and automatically shut off, but you can alter this setting to meet your needs.

When you’re busy entertaining, or if you prefer the convenience of having steamed or frothed milk dispensed into your waiting cup, the J5 comes with the FrothXpress system. The FrothXpress system features a milk tube and special nozzle that can be attached right to the machine once the Dual Frother Plus is removed. Once the FrothXpress is attached to the J5, place the milk tube into any container of cold, fresh milk and place your cup underneath its dispensing spout. Simply start the steaming process and milk for your cappuccino, latte, or macchiato will be ready in no time.

If you need hot water for an Americano, tea, or hot chocolate, the Jura Capresso Impressa J5 can also dispense hot water from the steam wand. Just place a cup underneath the steam wand and press the hot water button on the control panel. To increase or decrease the amount of water dispensed, you can turn the rotary dial on the top of the machine for a maximum of 15oz of water.

Shut Down

You can manually shut down the Jura Capresso Impressa J5, or program it to shut down after a preset amount of time has elapsed.

When you’re done brewing for the day, you can manually shut the J5 down by pressing the on/off button at the top of the machine. However, you can also program the machine to automatically run a rinse cycle and shut down after a certain amount of time has passed since you brewed your last shot, up to 2 hours.

Top of Page

A Word About Care and Maintenance

To keep your machine in top shape, make sure to empty the drip tray at the end of every day.

The LED display will notify you when the spent coffee drawer needs to be emptied, and it can be easily accessed and removed through the front service door of the machine. Make sure to empty the spent coffee drawer while the J5 is on so the machine knows it has been removed and cleaned out. This way, the J5 can reset, and the notification will no longer flash on the display. Make sure to also clean the steam wand with a damp cloth after every use to prevent build-up. You should run a little steam through the wand after every use as well, as this will expel any milk that might be inside the wand and prevent blockage.

To keep the Impressa J5 brewing at its best, there are some periodic cleaning cycles that have to be performed. If you do not install the Clearyl Water Filter, the machine will notify you when a descaling cycle has to be performed, typically every 2-3 months depending on water hardness. If you do install the filter, you will simply be prompted to change the filter. The machine will also notify you when a cleaning cycle needs to be performed using Jura Capresso cleaning tablets, and the LED display and instruction manual will guide you through this process.

If you would like to know a little about the many types of espresso machines we sell, this would be a good video to get you started. This video covers the machines we sell and based on your lifestyle, what you like to drink, and ease of use. It will give you an overview of different espresso machines and help you determine which one best suits to your needs.

I would watch the video and focus on a particular kind of machine—prosumer, semi-automatic, and super-automatic to decide which kind is ideal for you. Then, you can go and look at individual models to get a better idea of exactly what you want. Of course, if you narrow it down to a few espresso machines and are still undecided, give us a call and we would be glad to help!

Do not buy this machine! The frothing wand exploded off the machine several times, sending boiling hot milk and steam up into face and over hand holding cup! The attachment for stem was on securely, pointing down (not off to the side). It had done this several times sending the stem bolting into the cup. I thought it was something I was doing, but after the third time, this is a DANGEROUS machine...could have put out an eye, broken the cup, bad burns on face and hand!!!

I have liked everything about this machine except for its reliability and Jura customer service. AFter about 3 months of use, I began to get the message "empty coffee grounds" when the tray contained no grounds or water. After 9 months of total use the message remained constant which meant that I could no longer use the machine. Jura has attempted to repair the machine on 4 different occasions. i had not had a working machine for 4 months. Although Jura will again pay shipping to repair the machine, I am ready to punt and purchase a different machine of a different brand.

I had a Capresso C1500 for about 6 years. It started leaking and making weak coffee. So, I got the J5 as an upgrade/replacement. I have now own the J5 for about 2 months. It is definitely an improvement over the C1500. Pros - It makes really hot beverages - Two types of frothing method: 1. Traditional way; 2. FrothXpress way - Programmable everything (e.g. water temp, strength of coffee, amount of water..etc) - Self-rinsing before startup and before shutdown. - Convenience. Cons - Cheap Plastic Shell (Especially for a machine costing $1800!!) - Extracting the espresso too fast. (But this is with all Super-autos) - Does not have a traditional steam wand. (the wand came with it is not really a traditional one you find with other machines) - Cleaning the wand properly after use. (You really have to soak it and make sure the little holes on the wand are clean. Or else it will not steam properly) I think maybe because now I am a bit more experienced in making espresso and understand the details that goes into it that I find I am looking for more in a machine. Yes, this is a very good machine that produces good coffee/espresso. But now I am wanting to go a step higher and get a "God" shot of espresso. The J5 (actually all super-autos) will not give you that. What this machine will give you is convenience. The shots are hot and are good. It will give you good froth but not the true micro-foams you find in traditional semi-auto machines. I still love the machine and feel that the espresso it produces is better than 80% of the retail coffee shops. I would recommend this machine to people who are into coffee/espresso and knows at least that good espresso does not need to taste bitter. This machine will satisfy probably 90% of the coffee drinkers out there. For the other 10%, the coffee snobs, this machine probably will not do. It does not produce "tiger stripes" shots (at least I am not able to do it). You can not control tamping. The steam wand is not traditional and in my opinion not that powerful. Does this mean I am a coffee snob?!? But really, I can not complain too much it is still a wonderful machine. I am starting to contemplate more of a prosumer type of espresso machine. One that is semi-automatic and you really need the end user's experience/input to produce that "god" shot (e.g. Tiger Stripes crema). Well, I will use this until it dies. Then I will go the next step....

I was interested in espresso, and my wife wanted something that could make the caffe crema that we have had elsewhere. After living with the trusty Capresso grind and drip for some years, we knew we didn't want to fool around with the standard espresso ritual, especially in the morning. We roast our own beans, and enjoy the diversity, so pods were out. A super-auto seemed to be the thing, but they were all too expensive. Luckily I had a chance to acquire a J5 at a fire sale price. I have to say that I'm very pleased with it. Most espresso fanatics will tell you that a super-auto can't make good espresso. I think that is an exaggeration. There's no question that a traditional machine can make better espresso, but the J5 produces a perfectly decent drink. It's the combination of convenience and quality that makes the J5 work for us. You may have to twiddle the settings a bit -- for instance, we find that our beans brew best at "Normal" temp; "Hot" brings out a little too much bitterness in the beans we use. It's hard to beat being able to press a button and get a shot or a suisse in a few seconds, no mess, no distraction. In fact our coffee consumption has definitely gone up! I had thought of buying a separate traditional espresso machine, but I find that so far the J5 (and an Aeropress for the occasional manual cup) is all we need. Other observations: the controls are reasonably straightforward and easy to use. The machine looks good and is relatively compact. The grinder is much quieter than the old grind+drip. This machine produces a startling array of whirs, clunks, and buzzes, but so far no maintenance problems. We rarely drink milk drinks. In fact I have yet to try one with the J5. So I can't at this point say anything about the frothing capabilities.

What's Best About this Product?

Decent and predictable cup quality, maximum convenience.

Some Helpful Tips For Using this Product:

If you aren't happy with the first cups from a J5, adjust the grind and temperature. (I'm not sure how much leftover grind sits in the machine, I would make at least a couple cups on a new grind setting before judging it.) It can make a lot of difference.

Some Improvements I Would Recommend for This Product:

I agree that hardwiring the two double cup buttons to XSTRONG is a bit strange. I'd prefer to have the full programmability of all 4 buttons. The printed manual has all the illustrations up front, rather than inline with the text. This is beyond bizarre, and really should be fixed. Fortunately it doesn't affect the machine's operation any!

At this writing I’ve owned the J5 for two weeks and have produced approximately 100 shots of espresso/coffee. Having stated that as a qualifier, I’ve found this super automatic espresso machine to be outstanding in performance, ease of use, and quality of espresso produced. The controls are simple to understand and use – there are detailed descriptions of these available across the internet, the manufacturer’s website even includes a number of very informative videos. Considering the financial commitment associated with this machine, I was more than a little hopeful that it would produce quality espresso in a straight forward and timely manner. It does this with aplomb. Regarding its operation, the J5 heats quickly (around 60 seconds) then is ready to run the rinse cycle (also quick, at around 10 seconds). Once the rinse cycle has completed it’s ready for action. I won’t go into detail about the individual espresso/coffee settings (again, this info is readily available elsewhere) other than to say the controls work exactly as described. Each button is customizable, both permanently and as a one-time override. A very wide range of volume and strength is attainable by adjusting these controls. The morning routine: I was quite concerned about the total end-to-end time for brewing in the morning before work, and I have to say in this regard I am very pleased. I’ve configured the J5 to automatically turn on as I’m showering/shaving etc, so when I arrive in front of the machine it’s ready to run the rinse cycle. If you’re interested in ensuring the warmest possible espresso/coffee, I recommend running an additional rinse cycle to heat up the internal components a bit more, this combined with preheating your cup really produces a nice hot cup. In the mornings I brew 8 oz. of café crema. The whole process, including a rinse cycle after brewing (the machine prompts for this after hitting the on/off button), takes about 3-4 minutes. This time would be cut by at least half if you were brewing the standard 1-2 oz espresso instead of the higher volume café crema. If you’re interested in immediate cleanup, the drip tray and dreg box are easily removed and rinsed – both will hold a substantial volume however, so daily cleaning of these items is not required. A word on espresso quality: Okay, after covering some of the operational highlights, here’s the real question – of what quality is the espresso/coffee produced? The short answer is…OUTSTANDING! Producing quality espresso consistently is where the J5 really excels. I’ve used two types of espresso so far, Lavazza Pienaroma and the Organic Espresso available from CoffeeAM.com. The standard 1-2 oz espresso shots produced using both of these beans results in an amazing amount of crema (1/4 inch) and a fantastic taste. I’ve also used a locally available pre-ground decaf espresso in the by-pass doser with good results. It’s difficult to describe a quality taste in a written review, but the espresso shots produced by the J5 are simply outstanding. It’s difficult to continue enthusiastically describing features of this machine without sounding like a shill for the manufacturer…but a few more things are worthy of mention: • I’ve used the frothXpress attachment for making cappuccinos and lattes a handful of times and it works well, much better than I expected, and is easy to clean. I have not used the optional Dual Frother Plus. The hot water is nice and hot, and works extremely well when used as a cup warming aid. • I’ve had no issues with the conical burr grinder or any of the other brewing components. They work well and operate within very acceptable sound levels. • Commenting specifically on the espresso/coffee temperature, I can say that while using the “hot” setting, a rinse cycle to heat up the internal components, and preheating the cup with hot water, the output is very acceptable – no need to be hotter. • Brew duration seems to be heavily effected by the grind setting. For example, a fine setting using dark oily beans induces very slow brew times. If these types of beans are used, a grind setting between medium and coarse seems to work best; this produces a great crema and normal brew duration. Oily beans should also be air dried for 4-5 hours before adding to the hopper to allow the excess oils to dry. • Included with the J5 is an excellent owner’s manual and very handy instructional DVD. Reading/viewing both is highly recommended. Con?: For reasons I have yet to determine, both 2 cup buttons brew at the “extra strong” strength setting only. Although I don’t consider this a major fault, it seems very odd that the volume setting is configurable and the strength is not. Finally, as stated above, I’ve owned this machine for only about two weeks, so I can’t yet comment on durability or longevity. However, the build quality and performance so far would seem to portend high marks for both.

This is my first experience with a Jura machine. I've had a Saeco Vienna for 5 years previously. We're returning the Jura. First, this machine copes very badly with oily beans. At the default settings, it makes pucks about 1/10 the normal size (with no warnings or other notices) and produces extremely weak coffee. The grinder just fails to work entirely. If you set the grind to the most-coarse setting and the strength to XSTRONG it manages to produce a decent single espresso. However, the double espresso ("2 espressi") preset does not allow one to set the strength, and as a result the shot from this setting comes out weak. Same with the Caffe Crema settings. Too weak to drink. My 5 year old Saeco can grind these beans easily and always produces good shots from them. But the reason we bought this new machine was the frothing abilities. Impressions here: FrothXPress (attached from the factory): decent froth (not great), a bit of a pain to clean up (you have to fill your milk container with water and run it bath and forth a couple times). Wife says the tube is extremely ugly, but the convenience is nice if you're making a lot of cappuccinos. Manual frothing wand: a disaster. After attaching, this one exploded off the machine (twice within two minutes of frothing), dropping into the frothing pitcher and spraying milk in every direction. Also, it's a bit short. This Jura is quite messy--the pre-infusion will often spatter coffee outside the cup, and if you look up into the machine after removing the dump box you see quite a lot of grounds and other dirt you'd expect all the "automatic cleaning" features to, well, clean. I had high hopes for this machine, and the design is absolutely beautiful, but I'm much happier with my old machine and will keep using it instead.

The j5 is newest in the family of jura capresso. It won an award for its flawless design and is as versatile as the z5's for a little less sticker shock. the major difference between the j5 and the z5 is wattage, capacity, thermal milk unit and one touch latte and cappuccino interface. with all the machines you are basically getting the same insides...what you are paying the extra for is convenience(and some extra amenities here and there)! the higher the model, the easier it is to get what you want. Yes, through experimentation you can find subtle differences in the coffee from one machine to the other (ie ive found that the f9 releases a little too much water into the espresso, giving a weakness in flavor compared to the z5). test them all out, its worth the added research to find the one that fits your needs. also check out jura's website capresso.com .

everything, its easy to operate, cleaning is a SIMPLE TASK for those of you out there who complained you have to refill the water or clean out the dredge tray. HELLO?!!! its the same if you bought a puppy, you have to clean up after it duh. its really not that hard, take two seconds out of your day to do something menial, are you really that lazy?

Some Helpful Tips For Using this Product:

if you want a "hotter" cup of coffee there is a way to override the preset temperature of 192 degrees. but really for espresso that is the optimal temperature to enjoy your drink at anyways. you should start with a warm cup to begin with, and as for rinsing your machine when it turns off and on, not only is that cleaning out the system, but it is pre heating your elements so that less heat will escape giving you the best cup of espresso possible. oh and one more thing. there is no way to get this item cheaper. they mandate their prices, so good luck finding the priced varying more than a dollar. the only way companies can sway you to purchase from them is with the amount of free stuff they give and how good the warranty/service is.

Some Improvements I Would Recommend for This Product:

i do agree that the machines should be able to hook up to a main water line or from the refrigerator. but at the same time, these are not commercial machines! if you want one of those go spend 5-8 thousand and let me know how easy one of those are to have in your kitchen. the water tank on the jura's are easy to fill and they are removable. how much easier can you get?

  • In order to get the maximum strength/flavor from your machine, follow these steps:

    1. Depending on your machine, increase the fineness of your grind by changing your grind setting to a low number or small dot.
    2. Reduce the water volume to 2 oz.
    3. Adjust the amount of ground coffee used for each shot (up to 18 grams at the maximum setting).

  • You can increase the temperature of your drink anywhere from 10-20 degrees by adjusting the machine’s temperature settings and ensuring that all of your brewing components are preheated properly:

    1. If your machine has adjustable temperature, enter into the machine’s menu mode and choose the temperature setting you want.
    2. While in menu mode, verify that the rinse mode is turned on. The rinse feature runs a quick dose of hot water through the brew spout upon startup. This helps to warm up the internal components of the machine, and also rinses away any coffee build-up that might alter the taste of your espresso.
    3. Run water through your hot water spout and into your cup. This accomplishes two things- It helps to preheat the internal components and it heats the cup as well.

If you're talking espresso, and using ceramic cups, pre-heat your cup. 1 oz of espresso in a cold cup = 1 cup of tepid espresso.
