Customizing all of the machine’s settings is made easy by the red LED display, guiding you through programming step-by-step in the language of your choice. This display will also let you know when you need to refill the bean hopper or water reservoir, run a descaling cycle, or empty the used coffee drawer.
If you love cappuccinos, lattes, and other café-style drinks, the Jura-Capresso Impressa J5 will serve as your own personal coffee shop. You have the choice to manually froth or steam your milk using the patented Dual Frother Plus wand, or you can have the J5 automatically steam or froth for you using the included FrothXpress. Both produce outstanding results in just moments, making the J5 an indispensable machine when entertaining guests who love espresso. You can even customize the coffee spout when brewing 1 or 2 cups by moving the dispensing nozzles closer together or farther apart, depending on your needs. Cleaning up is also a breeze, with a removable dump box, drip tray, and 71oz water reservoir. A Clearyl water filter is also included with the J5 to help prevent scale build-up and to keep your espresso tasting its best.
Getting Familiar
To guide you through brewing, programming, and maintenance, the J5 has a red LED display.
The display is located right above the beverage buttons on the front of the machine that control hot water, 1 espresso, 2 espresso, steam, 2 coffees, and 1 coffee dispensing. There is an icon next to each of the buttons, so remembering what each button controls won’t require a manual whenever you brew. All of these buttons come with pre-programmed liquid volume, strength, and temperature settings that are outlined in the product manual, but they can easily be reprogrammed to meet your tastes. The only setting that isn’t controlled by a button or dial on the front of the machine is the conical burr grinder fineness setting. To change the fineness, simply turn the adjustment knob in the bean hopper while it is running.
A rotary dial and push button on the top of the machine let you navigate all programming and brewing functions on the J5. To enter programming mode, simply press and hold the push button at the center of the rotary dial until the LED display reads “Rinse.” Then, turn the rotary dial to scroll through the different features and settings. When the J5 is not in programming mode, you can manually override the beverage button settings on a cup-to-cup basis using the rotary dial and push button.
Getting Ready
When the Jura Capresso Impressa J5 arrives at your home, you’ll be brewing after a few simple start-up procedures.
After you take the J5 out of the box, place it on a sturdy counter, plug it in, turn on the main power switch by the power cord, and then press the “On” button located on the top of the machine. Next, follow the instructions for activating the Clearyl water filter and priming your machine as detailed in the instruction manual. This process takes only a few minutes and will prepare the internal pump for brewing. Finally, fill the 71oz water reservoir with fresh, cold water, fill the hopper with your favorite beans and you’re ready to brew!
Making Your Drink
With the Jura Capresso Impressa J5, you can easily customize your coffee to meet your specific taste.
With just a push of any of the programmable beverage buttons, the J5 will brew the coffee size, strength, and temperature of your choice and dispense it right into your cup. You have the choice to brew using the presets for each button or to manually override the settings for just one cup. You can also program the beverage buttons to meet your specific tastes, so every time you brew, you get a consistent shot made just the way you like it.
To enter programming mode, press and hold the button at the center of the rotary dial on top of the machine. The word “Rinse” will appear on the LED display, and then turn the dial clockwise so the word “Buttons” appears. Press the center button to select this option and the words “Select Button” will flash on the display. Press the beverage button you would like to program and the LED display will then guide you though programming the strength, liquid volume, and temperature settings. You can choose from 4 coffee strengths (mild, normal, strong, xstrong), 2 coffee temperatures (normal, high), and liquid volume in .5oz increments up to 8oz per cup. When you choose the 2 espresso or 2 coffee buttons, the liquid volume you set will be doubled.
If you have guests over who prefer decaf coffee, or if you would just like to enjoy a late evening latte, the Jura Capresso J5 features a bypass doser. This allows you to brew using pre-ground coffee, so you can make an espresso using beans other than the ones in your hopper.
Topping it Off: Frothing & Steaming
The Jura Capresso Impressa J5 gives you the option to manually or automatically froth milk for cappuccinos, lattes, and more.
The J5 comes with both a Dual Frother Plus and a FrothXpress. The Dual Frother Plus is a 2-position steam wand that lets you manually froth or steam milk for café-style drinks. When the sleeve on the steam wand is up, it will create steamed milk and when the sleeve on the steam wand is down, it will create frothed milk. To start the steaming process, immerse the Dual Frother Plus in a pitcher of cold milk and press the steam button on the control panel once. In a few seconds, the boiler will heat up to steam temperature and the LED display will flash “Ready.” Press the steam button once again to start dispensing. The button is set to steam for 20 seconds and automatically shut off, but you can alter this setting to meet your needs.
When you’re busy entertaining, or if you prefer the convenience of having steamed or frothed milk dispensed into your waiting cup, the J5 comes with the FrothXpress system. The FrothXpress system features a milk tube and special nozzle that can be attached right to the machine once the Dual Frother Plus is removed. Once the FrothXpress is attached to the J5, place the milk tube into any container of cold, fresh milk and place your cup underneath its dispensing spout. Simply start the steaming process and milk for your cappuccino, latte, or macchiato will be ready in no time.
If you need hot water for an Americano, tea, or hot chocolate, the Jura Capresso Impressa J5 can also dispense hot water from the steam wand. Just place a cup underneath the steam wand and press the hot water button on the control panel. To increase or decrease the amount of water dispensed, you can turn the rotary dial on the top of the machine for a maximum of 15oz of water.
Shut Down
You can manually shut down the Jura Capresso Impressa J5, or program it to shut down after a preset amount of time has elapsed.
When you’re done brewing for the day, you can manually shut the J5 down by pressing the on/off button at the top of the machine. However, you can also program the machine to automatically run a rinse cycle and shut down after a certain amount of time has passed since you brewed your last shot, up to 2 hours.
A Word About Care and Maintenance
To keep your machine in top shape, make sure to empty the drip tray at the end of every day.
The LED display will notify you when the spent coffee drawer needs to be emptied, and it can be easily accessed and removed through the front service door of the machine. Make sure to empty the spent coffee drawer while the J5 is on so the machine knows it has been removed and cleaned out. This way, the J5 can reset, and the notification will no longer flash on the display. Make sure to also clean the steam wand with a damp cloth after every use to prevent build-up. You should run a little steam through the wand after every use as well, as this will expel any milk that might be inside the wand and prevent blockage.
To keep the Impressa J5 brewing at its best, there are some periodic cleaning cycles that have to be performed. If you do not install the Clearyl Water Filter, the machine will notify you when a descaling cycle has to be performed, typically every 2-3 months depending on water hardness. If you do install the filter, you will simply be prompted to change the filter. The machine will also notify you when a cleaning cycle needs to be performed using Jura Capresso cleaning tablets, and the LED display and instruction manual will guide you through this process.
