If you’re looking for a coffee maker that is akin to the kind you’d find in a restaurant in terms of durability and capability, look no further than the Pro Line 12-Cup Coffee Maker. As part of KitchenAid’s Pro Line appliance series, you know you are getting a machine that’s built to perform. A lot. In fact, it has a laundry list of professional-quality components and the bells and whistles we love - literally. For example, when you haven’t put enough water in the machine, a bell will indicate you need more. The machine will also beep to tell you the water reservoir is near full so you don’t overfill it. The machine will also beep when the coffee is done brewing. And you can turn the sound down or off  if you don’t want your machine talking to you.

Beyond its sounds, the Pro Line has automatic shutoff and a programmable brew timer and clock (so your coffee is ready and waiting for you when your roll out of bed) complete with flicker protection which holds and protects this information in the event your power surges or flickers, so you don’t have to reset everything. It also has digital icon indicators including reservoir level, message tone sound level and water filter change needed. Another cool feature is its “time since brewing display” gauge that lets you know at a glance how old that pot of coffee is.

All this functionality makes the Pro Line a gem. That fact that it comes in such a good-looking package is icing on the cake. Housed in a heavy-duty die-cast metal and beautifully finished in nickel pearl gray or onyx black, the Pro Line is as sturdy as it is handsome. Accenting the piece is its stainless steel brew basket that holds the removable coffee filter basket and highlighting the machine is its modern looking control panel with bright blue digital display. Put it all together, and the Pro Line coffee maker will make an exceptional addition to any entertainer’s kitchen or small office.

Controls:
The user experience is what the Pro Line is all about, starting with pre-programmability.
Program the time, when you want your machine to turn on, and how loud you want your message tones to be and it’s all displayed on the blue display panel in the center of the machine. Another light-up control you’re not likely to find on very many machines is the time since brewing display that lets you know how fresh that pot of coffee on the burner is. 30,60, 90 and 120-minute quadrants light up to let you know how long ago you made that pot of coffee.

Beyond all that, this machine talks to you too. Beeps sound when the reservoir is not full enough, almost full and when it’s done brewing. Speaking of smart, the Pro Line also has automatic shut off. Two hours after brewing, the machine turns itself off, just in case you forget to. This protects not only you, but its heat pump from burning out, and the leftover dribble of coffee in the bottom of the pot on the hot plate from crusting up and needing to be chiseled out of the carafe.

Performance:
The Pro Line is a commercial caliber machine that is built to work in any kitchen or small office setting. You can brew 4 to 12 cups of piping hot coffee at a pop with this machine. And brewing happens fast and furious, thanks to the professional grade 1350-watt stainless steel heat pump. And unlike many noisy home machines, the Pro Line has the Quiet Finish Brewing system to reduce the noises you normally hear while brewing.

Construction:
Die-cast metal housing is what makes this machine so strong and solid. Better make sure you have your spinach before you try to move it, because it’s not budging. And as powerful as this machine is, it’s by no means visually offensive and space hogging like a big commercial machine. Finished in nickel pearl gray or onyx black, its good looks will compliment any modern kitchen.

Carafe:
The Pro Line comes with a 12-cup glass carafe. It has a water-required to amount-of-coffee-desired fill line which is easy to follow. (You need more to start brewing than you will ultimately get once brewing is over based on the fact that coffee grinds will retain water.) The carafe has a durable black plastic handle that’s affixed solidly to the side of the pot. The lids are removable for easy cleaning and interchangeable with the extra orange decaf lid that comes with the machine.

Hot Plate:
The Pro Line’s hot plate has an independent temperature control.
A dial on the bottom front of the machine (right below where the carafe sits for brewing) controls the temperature of the hot plate, allowing you to keep your coffee warm or piping hot. In addition, the hot plate will shut off automatically 2 hours later. Neat extra: the Pro Line also comes with an interchangeable orange coffee pot lid – just like you see in restaurants on the decaf pots.

Reservoir:
While the reservoir sits in the back of the machine, it fills from the top front for easy access.
Easy to read icons let you know how full your reservoir is. A bell will go off when you are approaching full, so you don’t overfill the machine and spew water everywhere.

The water filters to the back of the Pro Line, passing directly through the removable water filter, and then gets warmed by the heat pump before dripping through the coffee grinds in the coffee filter and into the pot. The Pro Line will not operate with less than 17 ounces of water (4 1/2 cups of coffee). If you try to run the machine on less water, it will beep at you (the equivalent of getting your knuckles smacked with a ruler).

Water Filtration:
The Pro Line comes with an advanced ion-exchange water filter.
Filtering the water removes chlorine and other contaminants that adversely affect the flavor of the coffee. Filtering your water also keeps it softer so you don’t have to descale your machine as often.

The filter is good for 25 gallons of water before it needs replacing, as indicated by the little icon  on the display panel. Of course, using the filter is optional, but a better quality of water will make for better tasting coffee.

The filter sits in the rear of the machine, and can be dropped in or pulled out by its finger hole through the trap door on the top rear of the machine.

Coffee Filter:
The Pro Line takes standard flat-bottom paper coffee filters, but can use a reusable gold tone filter.
Whether you’re using a paper filter or the gold tone filter, simply pop it into the removable coffee filter basket that rests inside the stainless steel brew basket. The plastic filter basket comes out for easy cleaning or emptying of the filter full of used grinds.

Accessories/Re-order:
The Pro Line comes with a replaceable water filter, coffee, orange decaf carafe lid, 7 ounce coffee scoop, filter basket, and ten #4 paper filters. It also comes with a detailed user manual.

The Pro Line comes with KitchenAid’s remarkable 2-year hassle-free warranty, which means should anything go wrong with the machine, KitchenAid won’t fix it. They’ll simply replace the whole thing – no questions asked.
