With the Krups Duothek Stainless Steel Therm, the double-walled, brushed stainless steel carafes are anything but afterthoughts. Specially designed to preserve coffee freshness and flavor, the carafes lock heat in and air out. The machine’ s two independent brewing systems enable you to brew 20 cups of the same coffee or two different coffees simultaneously. The deep brew technology of the Duothek Stainless Steel Therm adjusts to maintain flavor whether brewing a full pot or as little as 1 – 3 cups. With no timers and no programming, this machine is straightforward, easy to use, and especially useful for parties or gatherings where large quantities or different types of coffee are needed.
Controls:
Controls for Krups Duothek Stainless Steel Therm consist of simple switches located near the bottom of the machine, between the two carafes. There is a separate boiler and control system for each carafe. A lighted on/off switch for each side indicates when brewing is underway. The left carafe has an additional switch allowing you to select between 1-3 and 4-10 cups to adjust water flow over ground coffee and create a more flavorful cup.
Performance:
With its stainless steel carafes, Krups Duothek Stainless Steel Therm adds a little flair to the workhorse role of a dual coffee maker. The machine is capable of brewing large quantities of one coffee, or full pots of two different types. The adjustments for brewing smaller pots of coffee in the left carafe function very well, and produce a cup of coffee consistent with those brewed in larger batches. In addition, the thermal carafes preserve the flavor and heat of the coffee, keeping it tasting fresher longer. As a package, these features make the Duothek Stainless Steel Therm an excellent performer.
Construction:
The brewing units have a black plastic housing with brushed metal stainless steel carafes. The black and stainless machine has very few buttons, making a sleek, simplified look. Interestingly, the coffee filter holders do not directly connect to the central unit. Instead, they sit directly on the carafes, providing less room for heat to escape. The water level indicators are situated between the two carafes, making them very easy to gauge. A storage area on the back of the machine is included to house the cord.
Carafe:
The two 10-cup carafes are heavy duty without being heavyweight. They have double wall interiors to keep coffee hot without a direct heat source and large plastic handles that are easy to grip. They also have a rounded spout (without the usual indented lip) to help you point when you pour. This somewhat surprisingly makes for easy pouring with minimal drips. On the other hand, screwing on the carafe lid requires a bit of patience. It seals well, but may not screw on very smoothly at first. Initially, you may feel that the threads are not aligning properly, or that the seal is not tight. The lid does in fact fit securely, but it’s really a matter of feel and familiarity with the parts. You don’t want to overly tighten the lid either, or it will be very hard to remove later.
Hot Plate:
There is no need for a hot plate because of the thermal carafes.
Reservoir:
With the reservoir lids in the up position for filling, the Krups Duothek Stainless Steel Therm stands tall. You will need a minimum of 19” of vertical space. There are two separate reservoirs located behind each carafe, accessible through a single lid. To fill, simply open the door on top and pour in the water. On the front of the machine and in between the two carafes are two separate water level sight indicators, one for each reservoir.
Water Filtration:
No water filtration system is included. Using bottled or filtered water is recommended to improve the flavor of coffee and to lengthen the life of the machine.
Coffee Filter:
The Krups Duothek Stainless Steel Therm comes with #4 paper cone filters. You can also use a standard goldtone filter if desired.
