OverviewBack to Top
The appearance of the Krups FME4 is understated, but the powerful, 1100-watt FME4 is anything but retiring. This fully-programmable coffee maker utilizes an easy-to-read, brightly-illuminated digital display which you can use to program the clock, and you can use the timer to program a daily start time up to 24 yours in advance. Separate brewing and heating elements stabilize the flavor of the coffee, as does the duo action water filter. An audible signal lets you know when brewing’s complete, and you have the added safety of automatic shutoff and a warning indicator when the reservoir is empty. An LED display also indicates when you need to decalcify. The FME4 comes in black with a stainless steel front and glass carafe.
Use the four control buttons on the front of the FME4’s base to program and run the machine. The On/Off button turns on the machine and allows you to turn it off at any time during the brew cycle, or you can program the machine to turn off automatically after 1-5 hours. Use the Program and Hours/Minutes buttons in combination to set the clock and program the machine to automatically brew the coffee. The bright LED display is easily visible, and the 1-3 cup flavor control button gives you the freedom to make less coffee with the same hearty flavor. Select the 4-MAX option for a full pot.
The compact and symmetrical four-button setup is an eye-pleaser, but be prepared to consult the manual for more involved operations. The Program and Hours/Minutes buttons are used in combination for several tasks, including setting the clock, the automatic shutoff, and the Auto On feature, but beginners and aficionados alike will appreciate being able to program the machine to shut off automatically after 1-5 hours. The water reservoir is on the back, so it requires some maneuvering to fill it if you store it on the back of your counter; you might have to move it forward to flip up the reservoir lid. It can be a little tricky pouring the water around the enclosed tube that runs up the front of the reservoir, but if you’re careful, there’ll be no splashing. The external water level indicator is magnified, but it can still be difficult to determine how much water you’ve poured into the reservoir. Using the clearly-marked carafe to fill the reservoir should alleviate that problem. Overall, this machine gives you a flavorful pot of coffee while providing some of the most popular technological perks.
The Krups FME4 is curvy and stylish. Its compact black plastic and stainless-steel housing is visually pleasing, and the glass carafe handle is ergonomically designed. There’s an external see-through fluid level indicator on the side of the housing that lets you know how much water is in the reservoir, but you have to look at it from the right angle to see the numbers. You can open the removable, swing-away filter holder using the convenient soft release latch on the top right. And the separate heating plate and brewing heating elements help keep the coffee hot for hours and stabilize the temperature of the coffee, producing a better-tasting brew.
The glass carafe that comes with the FME4 has large-print fluid level indicators on the side. A no-drip pour spout in the rim of the carafe helps prevent spills, and both the carafe and the attached black plastic lid are dishwasher-safe.
The heating plate for the FME4 is coated and easy to clean. The separate heating plate and brewing units keep the coffee flavor strong after brewing.
Access the large water reservoir through its flip-back lid. There are no water-level markings in the reservoir, so use the carafe to fill it to the correct level. As a safety feature, a low water level icon appears in the LED display when the water reservoir is empty.
The FME4’s vegetable-based duo action water filter helps keep your water free of chlorine and lime. Water is purified as it runs out of the reservoir. Cleaning and maintenance are easier because less scale builds up in your machine, and chlorine is also filtered out, which gives you better-tasting coffee. The plastic filter holder curves to fit one way in the base of the water reservoir, and it features a handy, at-a-glance rotary indicator that lets you select the month in which you need to replace your filter. With hard water, change the filter every 80 brew cycles (approximately every 2 months); with soft water, change it every 120 cycles (approximately every 4 months). “CALC” appears in the FME4’s digital display when it’s time to decalcify. Using the water filter is optional, but you’ll want to descale the machine more often if you don’t use it.
Use the #4 paper cone filters that come with your machine. You can also purchase a permanent filter from Krups.
The Krups FME4 coffee maker comes with a glass carafe, #4 paper cone-shaped filters, duo water filter and holder, and instruction manual.
