Essential Info: The Krups FMF5 10-cup drip coffee machine combines sleek looks with technological perks. The FMF5 is a programmable brewing system that features a bright, blue-illuminated digital display, pause ‘n’ serve functionality, 24-hour advance programming, showerhead dispersion, and a stainless steel thermal carafe. This powerful, 1100-watt coffee maker also features a duo action water filter that screens out lime and bacteria, while the automatic decalcification indicator determines when you should clean the machine. A no-water indicator tells you when the water reservoir is empty, and an audible signal tells you when the brewing’s done. The FMF5 comes in black. Controls: Four control buttons on the front of the FMF5’s base operate the machine. The On/Off button turns on the machine and allows you to turn off the machine any time during the brew cycle. Use the Program and Hours/Minutes buttons in combination to set the clock and program the machine to make coffee up to a day in advance. The LED display is brightly lit and easy to read, and the 1-3 cup flavor-control button gives you the freedom to make a smaller pot of coffee with the same hearty flavor. Select the 4-MAX option for a full pot. Performance: Be prepared to consult the owner’s guide for some operations. To set the clock and Auto On, you need to use the Program and Hours/Minutes buttons in combination. After brewing, the stainless steel thermal carafe will keep your java hot for at least a couple of hours. The water reservoir is not marked with water level indicators, so check the magnified external water level markings on the side of the machine to find out how much water is in the reservoir. Getting to the reservoir, which is on the back of the Krups FMF5, can require some maneuvering, and you might have to move it to the front of the counter to open the flip-up lid if you store your coffee maker under a kitchen cabinet. Be careful not to splash yourself when pouring water around the enclosed tube that runs up the front of the reservoir. Construction: The Krups FMF5 is a light-duty machine that will look great on your counter. Stylish touches include the stainless steel carafe and the blue LED display. The external see-through fluid level indicator on the side of the Krups FMF5 is an advantage when you’re trying to figure out how much water is in the reservoir, though you have to be standing in the correct position to see the numbers. The double-walled vacuum carafe does its job well and keeps your coffee hot for hours after brewing. Carafe: The no-drip spout on the rim of the Krups FMF5 stainless steel carafe helps prevent spills. The removable carafe lid is designed to keep the heat in. The plastic ball in the top of the carafe lowers when it comes in contact with the filter holder and allows coffee to flow into the carafe. When you remove the carafe from the brewing position, the ball rises and prevents heat from escaping through the lid. Hot Plate: Thanks to a thermal carafe that keeps coffee hot for hours, there is no hot plate on the FMF5. Reservoir: Access the easy-fill reservoir through its flip-back lid. Use the carafe to fill the reservoir, which doesn’t have any water-level indicators. Water Filtration: You don’t have to worry about filtering your coffee before brewing, because the vegetable-based duo action water filter helps keep your water free of chlorine and lime. Water is purified as it runs out of the reservoir. Less chlorine gives you better tasting coffee and less lime scale. Less lime scale means you don’t have to clean the FMF5 as often and the machine runs more efficiently. The plastic water filter holder curves to fit one way in the base of the reservoir, and the rotary indicator on the water filter handle lets you select the month in which you need to replace the filter. With hard water, change the filter every 80 brew cycles (approximately every 2 months); with soft water, change it every 120 cycles (approximately every 4 months). “CALC” appears in the digital display when it’s time to clean the machine. Coffee Filter: The FMF5 comes with #4 paper cone filters, or you can purchase a permanent filter from Krups to hold the coffee grounds. Accessories/Re-order: The Krups FMF5 coffee maker comes with a glass carafe, #4 cone-shaped filters, duo water filter and holder, and instruction manual.
