ridgeless basket for silvia

After using the rancilio silvia for more than a year at least twice a day, dialing in settings and going through tons of espresso making drinks for friends and family, I have to say that this basket completely changed the quality of my shots. I'm not a big believer in tweaking things to this extent, I mean, can a basket with such a small difference in shape really make that much of a difference? I mainly bought it for the fact that more coffee fits in it, and that is more to my taste. What I found out is that the silvia LOVES this basket. What happened for me with this basket is that I could put about the same amount of coffee in the basket, but have the overall height be much lower than with the standard ridge basket. i always kept my tamps just below the ridge but I now firmly believe that the silvia wants more space in between the dispersion screen and the tamp. My pulls never have any holes or water channels as they had in the past, even though I worked hard to overcome them in every way. This basket lets the water more evenly soak in and I can only think that it's the space that did the trick. I love it and think the silvia should simply come with this basket instead. Best, nikos- NC, USA

So can I assume that this basket will work with the Rancilio Silvia V3 Stock Portafilter?

Sanfam ♦ While this basket *should* fit all Rancilio portafilters, we've heard from some customers describing that they encountered some difficulties using this with the Standard (non-Commercial) portafilter, namely that it was slightly too tall. While it will certainly fit the Commercial portafilter, the V3 Standard portafilter may be slightly too shallow. I'd advise contacting our sales department to look for another basket should you be interested in a third-party replacement product.

Do you know if this would work with the FrancisFrancis! X3 espresso machine? If not, do you sell a double shot basket that would work with it? Thanks!

I recently purchased the Ridgeless Basket, but find that regardless of how fine I grind the coffee, or hard lightly I tamp it, the espresso comes out EXTREMELY slowly (i.e., takes several minutes to produce a shot). It's almost as if either the perforations in the basket are too small, or the pressure in my Silvia is insufficient. Advice?

mjackson ♦ Harold I am not sure if that is the problem or exactly what the problem is. My fist thought is the grind to fine?

What kind of machine are you using ?

Those are important for me to know. I have not heard of any baskets with the holes to small, but that does not make it impossible to have happen.Give me a call when you have a chance.Mark Jackson 1-888-411-5282 ext 5196 and thanks

I just put into service a new Rancilio Silvia.I ma experiencing a serious learning curve from the la Pavoni it replaced. In looking around the W.L.L. site in search of help I see there is this replacement filter basket and it has me wondering about the stock basket that comes with the Silvia. I noticed when I remove the portafilter assembly after drawing a shot, the grounds remain quite soaked.. From what I understand, properly utilized espresso grounds should be fairly "dry" and knock out of the basket like a hockey puck. This is certainly not the case with the grounds in my first few attempts with the new machine. The grounds have been wet and sticky. Can you explain this phenomenon and might this replacement basket give me proper results. BTW the coffee I'm using was ground at a coffee shop with their professional grinder set for espresso.

mjackson ♦ Alan,

There are a lot of factors that go into making espresso. The main ones are the grind, the Tamp, the amount of coffee in the porttfilter, the amount brewed as well as the brewing temperature.

I think the one to focus on for right now is the amount of coffee in the portafilter. If you fill the portafilter all the way to the top and level it like a level cup for baking and then tamp you may be surprised by the results.Having a good tamper that fits , in your case a 58 mm tamper is also important. You also need then to follow the golden rule article we have on brewing espresso. The reason I think you have soupy watery pucks is that you are not putting enough coffee in the portafilter. Fill it up this way and then time your shots. If your shot time is lets say 45 seconds then your coffee may be ground to fine. Once you get the hang of how to make a great shot then it becomes fun. Please let me know if I can help. My name is Mark Jackson and I am at Ext. 5196

Hi,

Does this ridgeless basket work well with naked/bottomless portafilters? Thanks!

BaristaCorner Mike...Yes, the Rancillio ridgeless portafilter basket would work very well with a bottomless portafilter. You should order some of our Whole Latte Love Malabar Gold signature beans, you would be amazed at the quality of the blend and the creama that you can produce with a bottomless filter!! ...Thank You, Eric Black
