General Specifications

Colors: Brass . Chrome
Size: 10"H x 4"W x 6.5"D

Features

Hailing from Italy, the birthplace of espresso, the la Pavoni Burr Grinder uses tempered steel burrs to ensure a consistent and static-free grind, while giving you 9 different fineness settings for the perfect brew. But let’s not forget that some also call Italy the birthplace of style – and the la Pavoni Burr Grinder is no exception. Choose either the chrome or brass housing to match your espresso machine and kitchen décor, knowing that the grinder’s compact size (10” high) allows it to fit well into small spaces. Stylishly designed, the la Pavoni Burr Grinder creates a great coffee bar display when placed next to your espresso machine.

Quality Conical Burr Grinder

There are 2 types of grinders: burr grinders and blade grinders. Blade grinders use a propeller-type blade that creates friction and chops beans into an inconsistent grind. Burr grinders, like the La Pavoni , use 1 stationary serrated burr and 1 rotating serrated burr, so beans are drawn in between them and crushed evenly and consistently for the best-tasting drink. The burrs on the La Pavoni rotate at 100 rpm.

Design

On the front of your grinder, directly above the coffee dispensing chute, is a white number wheel that goes from 1 to 9. These numbers correspond to the fineness setting of the grinder – 1 is the finenest, 9 the coarsest. To adjust the setting, turn the knob located on the right side of the machine clockwise for a finer grind and counter-clockwise for a coarser one. Below the knob is the on/off switch, which starts and stops the motor.

Proper Bean Storage

Your coffee beans are stored in a tinted bean hopper on top of the machine, which holds ¼ lb of beans, or enough for 15 shots of espresso. Coffee beans can be damaged by light, moisture, and air – luckily, the sturdy plastic hopper provides a good defense against all 3. Beans degrade even more quickly once they are ground, which is why grinding your beans right before brewing is a good idea. The La Pavoni Burr Grinder gives you 2 choices – you can grind small amounts directly into your portafilter, or if you plan on brewing a lot of espresso for guests, you can grind beans directly into the grounds container and measure out what you need from there.

Operation and Auto Safety Shut Off

Whether you’re grinding into the grounds container or your portafilter, make sure to adjust the grind setting before you turn the machine on. To grind beans into the grounds container, make sure that the container is securely in place, and turn the switch to the on position. Grinding will begin, and once you have your desired amount, turn the switch to the off position. If you are grinding directly into a portafilter, remove the grounds container and place your portafilter under the coffee shoot. Use the portafilter to press up on the protruding plastic piece located beneath the hopper, and grinding begins. Release the pressure on it to stop grinding. As a safety measure, the grinder will automatically shut itself off after approximately 2 minutes of continuous grinding, preventing damage to the motor.

Cleaning and Maintenance

Daily cleaning is important, but simple – just unplug the unit, rotate the knob to the coarsest setting, and use the included cleaning brush to clean out any coffee in the dispensing chute. For a more thorough cleaning, unplug the unit and remove all the beans from the bean hopper on top of the grinder. Clean out the dispensing chute with the included brush, and then turn the unit upside down to remove excess coffee from the bean hopper. Tap the back of the grinder to dislodge any coffee residue. Put the grinder back on a level surface, plug it in, and turn it on to let the grinder spin free for no more than 10 seconds. This removes any beans and oils that might be left in the grinder.

Accessories

The La Pavoni Burr Grinder comes with a detailed instruction manual and cleaning brush.

jonathan smith There is not much being said about this grinder online. I'd like to know more - specifically, how it compares to Rocky, and other burr grinders within this price point. I'm focusing on this grinder because the other grinders seem too tall for my 15" clearance storage space (access to bean hopper would be problematic). Will this grinder work well with my Rancilio Silvia? Thanks.

Mark Jackson Jonathon, It is a good grinder for the money it would work well with the Silvia. It is not as solid as the Rocky. I Like the Baratza grinders for the money. You can adjust in smaller increments with the Baratza for better control. Check out the Preciso. They all will work.

chris Hale My wife bought me a La Pavoni coffee grinder off the internet and she instead received a "il macinino" made by Tre Spade in Italy. The two coffee grinders look exactly alike. Are they the same machine or is the "il macinino" a knock off? Thank you Chris Hale

Mark Jackson Chris, They are indeed one and the same.

I bought this unit with expectations that with its price and Italian origin it would last nearly a lifetime. It was nice while it lasted but unfortunately a rock got caught in the works. The interior parts are made of plastic, and replacement parts are no longer available. I am now the proud owner of a nearly $300 paperweight.
