Features

The Romantica Professional espresso machine by La Pavoni has a chrome base, steam pressure gauge and is triple plated to maintain its beauty and elegance. By lifting the lever, a piston inside the group is raised allowing water under pressure to infuse the coffee in the filter holder. The lever is then lowered causing the piston to force the water through the coffee into your espresso cup. Make one or two cups of perfect cafe quality espresso! The machine has a water level site gauge located on the side of the machine. Capable of making 16, 2oz cups. Make all of your favorite cappuccinos or lattes with a machine that has old world elegant ambiance! Please note that these machines may arrive with moisture, water marks, fingerprints or tooling marks due to factory testing. Instructional DVD included! Available in Chrome.

Features & Benefits: Coffee

Portafilter

The portafilter is made of chrome plated brass and has a heavy duty plastic handle.

Boiler

The large capacity boiler holds up to 38 ounce of water and is capable of making 16 two ounce cups of espresso. The boiler is made of brass and is chrome plated on the outside. The food safe inside of the boiler is nickel plated. The boiler is ready to brew in about six minutes. Due to the large boiler there is no wait time between steaming and brewing.

Pressure Controller

The boiler temperature is actually controlled with a pressure controller for quick and accurate response. The boiler will cycle on and off consistently and is set to maintain boiler pressure between .7 bar and 1 bar of pressure.

Controls

The main power switch is the only switch to operate. When turned on the switch will start to heat the boiler.

Heating Element

The stainless steel food safe heating element is made to resist corroding and for long lasting durability.

Sight Glass

On the left of the machine is a sight glass that will let you see the water level of the boiler.

Features & Benefits: Frothing and Hot Water

Commercial Style Steam Wand

The PC-16 comes with a three hole commercial style steam wand, for those of you who like to master the art of frothing. Unlike most home machines where you have to wait in between steaming and brewing, the PC-16 is always ready to go.

Features & Benefits: Care, Maintenance & Other

Safety Shut Off

There is a thermal fuse that will turn off the boiler if it overheats for any reason. The fuse turns the boiler off at 225F and is easily reset.

Pressure Relief Valve

This valve is located on the right side of the boiler. It is designed to open and release any excessive pressure in the boiler.

Maintenance

The exterior has a beautiful lacquered finish therefore any cleaning should be done with a soft cloth. The boiler should be decalcified twice a year with "Cleancaf" by Urnex. La Pavoni recommends that the gaskets should be replaced every three to five years depending on how long the boiler is left on. The boiler should always be turned off when not in use. There are 35 repair facilities throughout the US for any maintenance work.

Housing Construction

The base is made of steel and is triple chrome plated on the outside. The inside of the base has light polish to prevent any problems due to moisture. The drip tray is ABS plastic.

If you would like to know a little about the many types of espresso machines we sell, this would be a good video to get you started. This video covers the machines we sell and based on your lifestyle, what you like to drink, and ease of use. It will give you an overview of different espresso machines and help you determine which one best suits to your needs.

I would watch the video and focus on a particular kind of machine—prosumer, semi-automatic, and super-automatic to decide which kind is ideal for you. Then, you can go and look at individual models to get a better idea of exactly what you want. Of course, if you narrow it down to a few espresso machines and are still undecided, give us a call and we would be glad to help!

Great little machine

Great little machine! I love the complete control you have over what it produces when coupled with the Virtuoso Grinder's ability to produce various grinds. I have never lacked crema with this machine, and the 8-9 minutes for it to heat up before pulling a shot (almost invariably a double) is no problem. I particularly appreciate the pressure and water level guage that lets me know when pressure's up or I need to add water. It also froths milk for cappucino marvelously, though I've never used the automatic frother that comes with it. I love it. It sits in an honored and always available place on the kitchen counter ready to go.

How Long Have I Been Using This Product?

Less than 1 month

What's Best About this Product?

The complete control you have over the shot, its ability to produce very lovely crema, and especially the flavor of the coffee once all the "variables" - particularly grind and tamp pressure have been zeroed in on. It also has that "What you see is everything that goes on" look--nothing hidden, nothing making one wonder how it works, whether the pressure, temp, etc. is right.

Some Helpful Tips For Using this Product:

Don't use too fine a grind (wears the grinder and makes it hard for the water to infuse through), and don't overfill the coffee filter-you can't put the filter on with too much coffee in the filter. Also use good spring water. City water or hard well water affects the taste of the coffee!

My Experience With Using This Product:

Coffee Lover

The Coffee I've Tried With This Product:

Prestogeorge Organic Guatamala, and other locally roasted coffees (Pittsburgh)

Some Improvements I Would Recommend for This Product:

The coffee filter could be a slight bit larger for my money, but it's really not necessary.

Some of the Other Machines I've Used:

Various automatic coffee and espresso makers.

I'm in heaven

I have wanted one of these things for years and I finally got one. After spending a day trying to figure it out and drinking a lot of espresso (good and bad). i finally perfected it. This is the best espresso i have had since returning from Italy this past summer. If you want quick coffee don't get this machine. But if you are patient and love a good espresso like I do and are willing to try every different possibility (from the grind to the perfect pressure and every type of coffee out there) to perfect it this is the best machine on the market. Be careful because this little guy gets hot and I mean really hot.

The Coffee I've Tried With This Product:

Some Improvements I Would Recommend for This Product:

The heat of this machine and needing to wait a long time to let it cool to make more espresso once it is out of water.

Francis Francis, Krups, an Illy professional

I am looking to purchase a machine that will allow me to make a great cappuccino in the morning...or two....and espresso in the afternoon, as is the custom. If my girlfriend is over, I'd like to make her one too or any company. I like the manual pull and look. I'm reading reviews and I'm getting the impression that La Pavoni's are amazing machines that last for years and years, but they can't make decent foam. Is this true? I read one review that said if you do anything, get the 16 cup one because of the bigger reservoir in order to steam milk. Thoughts????

A A Basil,
The manual lever machines in general are a bit trick to use. But with time, patience, and work they can create a truly fantastic shot. Frothing also is a bit different on them. It's the same idea, but how the steam is produced and the power that it has makes it a little tricky. But again, it's a fully capable machine, and with practice will treat you well for years!

What size of tamper base should I choose for PC16's portafilter? I'm considering buying this machine and a new temper base for it at the same time. Just want them to fit as well as possible.

A A K.C.,
The tamper size needed for the PC-16 is a 51mm. We do carry it, though it is not listed as a size on our site. You can find the item at the link below:

mjackson ♦ Brian,

There are many to choose from. I would look at the Bartaza Virtuoso Preciso, the Baratza Vario, the Gaggia MDF, the Rancilio Rocky, the Mazzer Mini, and the Ceado E7. There are many to choose from. Give us a call and we can help as each grinder is different.

Will pavoni espresso machine work in india ,as the electrical appliances work on 220volts and 50Hz frequency there?

Zack Smith Manasa, All of our machine are 110V. In order to run on 220 you would need to purchase an adapter.

How many bars of pressure does this machine have? I believe most of these lever machines have 7-8 bars. How will this compare to a standard 15 bar automatic?

Michael Rosso ♦ John...Espresso is extracted at 8 bars of pressure. The 15 bar pumps in the automatics only use 8 bars of pressure to brew espresso. Thanks.

I have a Stradivarius la Pavoni (serial # 0000005 bought on the online auction) and an Europiccola la Pavoni

I have tried over the years to perfect my extraction and get lots of smooth crema

I'm never satisfied with my results ... I've experimented with grinding levels (using a la Pavoni burr grinder) and tamp pressure ... I've never figured out how much pressure to put on the hand pump .. is that also a variable I should play with?

TechMilanoItalia Thomas, once you lift up the lever all the way to let the water into the head, you want to apply slow, steady, firm pressure (you want it to be a smooth, continuous motion) on the pull. You also want to try to pull up on the portafilter handle at roughly the same amount of pressure to lessen stress on the machine body as well (this can become a bit of a tangle of arms/hands, but you will eventually get used to it). Then just practice, practice, practice! =)
