Owning the Mazzer Super Jolly Espresso grinder

The Mazzer Super Jolly is a stepless, doser grinder with manual timed grinding functionality. If you like the look and feel of the Mini, but need a higher capacity and bigger burrs for a more high octane grinding situation, the Super Jolly is the logical next step up. Its 350 watt motor is a notable upgrade from the Mini’s 250 watt one, and the extra large hopper holds significantly more beans than the short hopper on the latter. We find the Super Jolly impressive and simple to use by way of a turning a timer dial anywhere up to sixty seconds. The grounds are deposited into a doser, which can be adjusted to dispense anywhere from 5.5 to 9 grams into your portafilter with a flick of the dosing lever. Those grounds can then be easily tamped with the doser’s built-in tamper. Both the doser and its built-in tamper are designed with high-speed scenarios in mind, where you want to be able to quickly grind and tamp for several drinks in a row. We love it around the office for this fact alone, and think it would be excellent in a cafe setting, or a serious home entertainer.

The Mazzer Super Jolly’s 64mm stainless steel burrs are stepless, meaning they can essentially be adjusted infinitely by turning the collar in small amounts. Although the Super Jolly is capable of producing coarse or fine grinds, in the case of stepless grinders, we recommend commiting to espresso or other fine grinds, in order to avoid serious dialing in before every use. The burrs are easy to access for cleaning and calibrating them afterward is simple, too. If the Super Jolly seems nice, but a little too big for your needs, the Mazzer Mini or Mini P might be a perfect fit; or, if you’re interested in a programmable or doserless grinder, the Mazzer Mini Type A or B might do the trick.

  • Infinite Grind Settings

The Mazzer Super Jolly is a stepless grinder, meaning you can make adjustments in increments of your choosing, rather than a limited, factory-designated amount. This is ideal for dialing in your grind for better tasting shots of espresso on any prosumer machine it’s paired with. It can grind for coarse brew methods, too, though we recommend using a separate grinder for those.

  • Heavy Duty Motor

The Super Jolly was designed to handle a commercial load; the direct drive motor draws 350 watts and operates at 1600 RPM. It’s so quiet that when operating without beans you can barely hear the motor. As a safety feature, the Super Jolly features a thermal overload switch that automatically shuts the machine down if it starts to overheat.

  • Time-Based Grinding

The Super Jolly is manual, and as such it’s a breeze to use. Turn the dial for up to sixty seconds of continuous grinding into the doser, which then dispenses a pre-portioned amount from 5.5 to 9 grams into your portafilter with the pull of the lever. This functionality is simple and easy to master in no time at all.

  • Large Capacity Hopper

The Mazzer Super Jolly is outfitted with an extra large hopper for high volume brewing situations, whether at home or in a cafe. It’s made of a durable, clear plastic that holds up to 2.7 pounds, and features a handy hopper stopper, which closes the hopper for easy removal. This is great for swapping out the beans, or getting access to the burrs for cleaning or calibration.
