Pasquini Lux Coffee Grinder
How do you know when you have enough grounds with a doserless? I understand it turns on when you put the filter there, does it stop automatically when it's ground out 7 grams? Does it make a mess?

Pasquini designed the Lux Grinder to complement the professional quality and compact size of the Livietta Espresso Machine. With a height of just over 13 inches, the Lux Grinder is significantly smaller than Pasquini’s other grinders, and it still includes the professional quality components that home baristas demand. The Lux has stepless grind adjustment and an integrated portafilter holder with a micro-switch to give you complete control of grind fineness and dose. With quality features like the spill grate and metal housing, the Lux is a powerful addition to any home espresso machine.
The Lux’s housing and frame are made of heavy cast aluminum. It has a chrome finish and a removable plastic grate to catch spilled coffee grounds, ensuring that your countertop stays clean. The Lux is built with the Pasquini standard of quality, ensuring long lasting durability and performance.
The adjustment knob on the right side of the machine is designed to give you complete control over the grind. A full turn of the knob will make very subtle changes to the fineness level, or turn the knob several turns to make large changes. The grind adjustment knob allows you to customize your grind for anything from French press to very fine espresso. As you turn the adjustment knob, the scale on the bean hopper will rotate to show you what setting the Lux is at, so it’s always easy to fine-tune it exactly to your needs.
The Pasquini Lux gives you 2 different options to grind for single batches or in larger quantities. The grinder has a built-in portafilter holder and micro-switch to grind directly into your portafilter. For larger amounts, the Lux has a continuous grind switch next to the power switch, which can grind for up to 1 minute and 30 seconds continuously.
The Pasquini Lux features heavy duty conical burrs to evenly crush and disperse coffee beans quickly into your portafilter. Powered by a 150-watt motor, the Lux is designed to stand up to the high demands of heavy home use.
The bean hopper on the Lux is made of sturdy tinted plastic to protect the freshness of the beans. The top lid lifts off for easy filling, and the grind adjustment scale is easily visible along the base of the bean hopper. The built-in spill grate is a rare feature found on home grinders, protecting your counter from excess coffee grounds. It can be removed for emptying, and its plastic construction is durable and easy to clean.

I have had this grinder for over a year. As other reviewers have commented, it does not do well for coarse ground coffee. It won't even go all the way to the most coarse setting. IMO it works best for espresso. If the bean is roasted to FC, right before second crack or no more than 5 seconds into second crack, the grinder works pretty well. Most of the grind gets into the portafilter. However, if you go much further into second crack (the bean is darker or with oil), there is a significant amount of spray. That is, there is a lot of coffee grind that ends up on the counter, not in the portafilter. After each cup, I am cleaning up the counter of ground coffee. It's both annoying and ultimately wasteful.

The ability to use it with one hand. There is a pressure switch at the portafilter.

Roast my own coffee
The nozzel could be longer to reduce the amount of coffee 'spraying' onto the counter. The grind setting doesn't go much beyond '6'

this is a great machine. it's small and takes up almost no counter space. the bin below catches the occasional spill. it looks terrific in combo with my expobar machine. it works fast. it needs only one hand to operate. the portafilter sits right out in front where you can see exactly how full it is and stop immediately. the doserless variety of grinder is best for the home because you don't have lots of ground coffee sitting around forever. i'm SO happy i chose this machine!

When our Lux arrived it would not grind coffee coarse enough for drip or French press. We returned it for a replacement and it will when set to the maximum do grounds that are fine for drip but a bit fine for the French press.

Does fine for espresso, ok for drip grinding

When changing grinds you need to tip it forward to dump out the last of the previous grind and the way the legs and grounds tray work it needs three hands. A catch on the grounds tray so it didn't slide out would really help.

I chose a doserless because this is for the cabin and didn't want coffee to go stale. It works wonderfully in terms of grind. The factory setting of 1.5 was off; 3.5 works best for me with this coffee. The hopper is relatively small, which again is fine for this use (weekend cabin), but might be frustrating for someone who drinks a lot of coffee.

mjackson ♦ Antonieta,
it is hard to say it depends on the type of coffee you want as well as the type of bean you want. You need to adjust it accordingly. A little experimentation and you should be all set. It is capable of doing a great job.
Our Rancilio Silvia can't pull a shot over 14 seconds on the finest grind setting and over 40lbs tamp pressure. It use to do fine but we noticed a steady degradation over the last two years. We've tried cleaning it using Grindz and noticed no significant improvement. Any ideas what's wrong or what we might do to rectify it?

mjackson ♦ Craig,
You may want to think about getting new burrs. That is the only thing I can think of. You may also want to try and do a deeper cleaning of the grinder. I do not know of a way to re calibrate it.
mjackson ♦ Howard,
You can use grindz if you like to make it easy. Her is a link - http://www.wholelattelove.com/Urnex/grindz_box.cfm. Or you can unscrew hopper and then you get to the burrs. You can also take off top plate with hex screws and then remove the nut that holds the Burrs in place so you can get at the burrs. I would try the grinds you will be surprised at how well it works.
This grinder is supposed to have infinite grind adjustment. When I adjust mine to the coursest setting it stops at 7. The hopper has markings up to 10. This is not course enough for some roasts. Is there a reasonable solution?

I have a La Pavoni professional and I am looking for a coffee grinder that will grind the coffee fine enough. So far, I was able to get a wonderful Turkish grind from our grocery store but due to a broken grinder, I cannot grind my coffee there anymore. My research shows that I should get a stepless grinder but they all seem to be so expensive?! And this luxury grinder which you have come up for a stepless grinder has teps as well...
Could you recommend something?
Thank you so much for your help.
I am a coffee lover from germany stuck in starbucks land with no coffee for days now, smile...

Michael Rosso ♦ Ingeborg... Sorry to hear you are out of coffee. To meet your grinding needs and price range I would suggest either the Rancillio Doserless Rocky Grinder or the Rancillio Rocky. The difference between the two grinders would be the dosing option on the Rocky. Any further question please feel free to contact us at Whole Latte Love sales at 1-888-411-5282 option 1. Hoping you enjoy a great cup soon.
this looks like the Rocky. not much review except that one about its inablity to grind in course settings and we're DRIP coffee dirnkers. I don't know how you recommend this product over my earlier querry about the Virtuoso. Trying to get the best for the buck which includes its longevity and the ease of cleaning, which one to go for , Virtuoso, Pasquini lux or the Rocky.

BaristaCorner Hello Manny...In answer to your question, if you are drip coffee drinkers and you are not going to be grinding your beans fine for espresso, the Virtuoso will do just fine. However, if your will be using the grinder for espresso as well, go with the Rocky as your choice. Either one of these grinders is a great value. Thank you, Eric Black
So it must be something about Italians that like to make a mess. Great grinding. Horrible messy.
Get a doser machine if you dont want to clean your entire counter after every cup of coffee.

techkathy With a doserless grinder you cam measure out the coffee beans ahead of time and grind them. Most people just eyeball it. The grinder does not automatically stop. The Lux grinder has a deep grounds catch on the front. Any spilled grounds will fall into the tray.
