With its intuitive push-button controls, programmable settings, and automated functions, this Saeco model is sure to please!

Exclusive to Saeco, the Aroma System is a pre-brewing cycle that infuses your coffee grounds with hot water to maximize flavor extraction—giving you rich espresso with the push of a button! If you’re a latte or cappuccino drinker, you’ll be delighted with the steam wand, which comes equipped with a Pannarello attachment to create the best milk consistency for your beverages. Hot water is also readily available through the steam wand—a great benefit for soup or tea lovers. Available in silver or graphite, the Vienna Plus is a sleek, performance-driven machine that will let you skip those café lines in favor of rich, home-made brews. This machine includes a 1 year warranty directly through Saeco.

A Super Auto For Every Price Range

In last month's article, we took a look at a few standout semi-automatic machines for every price range. This time around, we're exploring super-automatic espresso for every budget. If you're in the market for a new machine, take a moment to check out our top picks below.

Economy Machine
The Saeco Vienna Plus, available in silver and graphite, is one of our most popular starter machines. While the Vienna Plus may not have all the bells and whistles found on higher-end machines, it is a solid super automatic suitable for daily use. Ideal for the value-conscious espresso lover, this machine is easy to use and maintain.

Surprisingly accommodating, the Vienna Plus can be programmed to brew 1-8 ounces of espresso. This model also features Saeco's famous OptiDose system to let you adjust the amount of beans ground per cup to customize the flavor and strength of your beverage. For full-flavored drinks, the Saeco Vienna Plus comes with a pre-infusion cycle that saturates grounds prior to brewing.

Don't let its price tag fool you; this machine has been outfitted with quality parts and features. Beneath the hood is a stainless-steel lined Thermoblock boiler, capable of quick and efficient operation. To the right of the control panel, you'll find an integrated conical burr grinder with 18 grind settings. A Pannarello wand makes for easy steaming and frothing; it can also dispense hot water for tea or an Americano. When it's time to clean your machine, the brew group pops right out. Just rinse it under a faucet, put it back in place and you're good to go.

Jura-Capresso Impressa ENA5Mid-Grade Machine
A step up from the Vienna Plus is the Jura-Capresso Impressa ENA5. In addition to letting you customize beverage strength and volume, the ENA5 lets you program drink temperatures. It is also equipped with Jura's Intelligent Pre-Brew Aroma System, a two-step pre-infusion cycle that ensures maximum flavor and crema extraction. There is a digital display that acts as an indicator, letting you know exactly what is going on with your machine. Maintenance alerts and programming features are clearly displayed for your convenience.

The mid-grade ENA5 offers the additional option of brewing with pre-ground coffee. If you're an occasional decaf or flavored coffee drinker, the bypass doser will let you prepare drinks from pre-ground coffee and prevent cross contamination with your regular beans. Like the Vienna Plus, the ENA5 has a conical burr grinder, but with this model there are six grind settings to choose from.

A stainless-steel lined Thermoblock boiler minimizes warm-up time and accommodates on-demand water usage. The Impressa ENA5 also eliminates minerals and scale from your tap water using an advanced Clearyl filtration system. The result is great tasting drinks and reduced scale buildup. A dedicated alert will even let you know when the filter needs to be replaced.

Its frothXpress system is another big advantage the ENA5 has over the Vienna Plus. This user-friendly system will automatically steam and froth your milk and dispense it directly into the cup. You can also manually steam and froth using the dual frother plus wand. If you're looking for a well-equipped super-automatic machine, the Jura-Capresso ENA5 may just be the one for you.

Gaggia AccademiaHigh-End Machine
Want to go all out? The Gaggia Accademia is a super automatic machine that's built to impress. This machine has been designed on a one-touch platform so you'll be able to make your favorite drinks with the push of a button. There are seven programmable drink buttons for espresso, caffe, caffe lungo, cappuccino, latte macchiato, and more.

The Gaggia Accademia lets you adjust coffee strength, temperature, and volume. Even the milk options are programmable with the Accademia; you can choose from normal, minimal and no-froth settings. The Milk Management System can add perfected steamed and frothed milk to your cup but since it functions on an external circuit, there milk actually never enters the machine. In addition, this one-touch machine has a stainless steel steam wand to let you manually steam and froth for lattes and cappuccinos; it also doubles as a hot water dispenser.

Gaggia's top-of-the-line machine super automatic has a built-in ceramic burr grinder with seven grind settings. As with the ENA5, the Accademia has a bypass doser to accommodate pre-ground coffee. This model operates on two stainless steel boilers, a vast improvement over both the ENA5 and Vienna Plus. With to boilers, you'll be able to alternate between brewing and frothing without any down time.

Best of all, the Accademia is exceedingly easy to clean and maintain. The milk system has an auto rinse cycle that cleans the circuit after each use to keep it free of residue and contaminants. Also, the brew group is removable so, like the Vienna Plus, the group can be rinsed under tap water. Dedicated maintenance alerts will let you know when the machine needs to be cleaned or descaled. The Gaggia Accademia is an investment that will deliver a world class brewing experience.

If you would like to know a little about the many types of espresso machines we sell, this would be a good video to get you started. This video covers the machines we sell and based on your lifestyle, what you like to drink, and ease of use. It will give you an overview of different espresso machines and help you determine which one best suits to your needs.

I would watch the video and focus on a particular kind of machine—prosumer, semi-automatic, and super-automatic to decide which kind is ideal for you. Then, you can go and look at individual models to get a better idea of exactly what you want. Of course, if you narrow it down to a few espresso machines and are still undecided, give us a call and we would be glad to help!

Saeco vienna

Been using this machine for 3 months and I have had no problems at all. The instructions are minimal and there is absolutely no instructions about how to make coffee drinks... But the performance of the machine has been great. My only caveat is the materials. The plastic seems thin and cheap and does not look too good. Also, made in Romania. Why can't we make a machine like this in the USA?

Some Improvements I Would Recommend for This Product:

Better instruction manual, taller spout height for larger mugs, easier transition from steamer to coffee maker, coffee recipe tips, nicer material for outer shell of machine.

I am on my second Vienna Plus. My first one lasted over 8 years before I felt it was time to replace it, although it does still work. This machine is super easy to use and very convenient. I've had more expensive super-automaticas, but I came back to this machine because it makes great espresso/lattes without any hassle. The only things I would change, would be to make the machine smaller, and to replace some of the plastic with metal. Still, a great product at a very competitive price!

Sanfam ♦ As a fellow Vienna-owner, I always love hearing from others who love them just as much!

While metal bits and pieces would certainly make it feel more upscale, I can't help but wonder if adding them would take away from some of its "Frugal Charm." I love the ease of cleanup associated with the matte-finish plastics, as well as its natural ability to hide fingerprints and avoid smudging.

I just love this machine. It's been a whole month since it arrived and I have been enjoying my cappuccinos each morning with relative ease in preparation. This machine does it all for you. What more could you ask? My only hitch was the fact that I originally ordered it in Graphite, I had to call them to find out why I had not received a ship notice and then was told it was available only in the silver. I told them to ship the silver and it arrived a day earlier than promised.

A real workhorse

This machine may not have the wealth of electronics and blinking lights that some other automatics have, but we have been brewing fantastic espresso for years without interruption. I keep checking out the WLL website looking for my next machine, but this one keeps going strong! With regular maintenance, it has performed year after year. I lost the outer frothing wand casing once and was able to order a replacement without a problem.

How Long Have I Been Using This Product?

More than 1 year

What's Best About this Product?

Durability, ease of maintenance. Great crema!

Some Helpful Tips For Using this Product:

Clean it regularly. For the first couple of years, I didn't really notice improved performance after cleaning, but lately it matters. I descale mine every 2 months or so and it makes a big difference in the warm up time.

My Experience With Using This Product:

Coffee Lover

The Coffee I've Tried With This Product:

Semeuse, Illy, Starbucks, Lavazza

Some Improvements I Would Recommend for This Product:

The water reservoir is not huge. There is no option for bypassing the beans in the hopper. Although, if everyone in your house drinks the same thing, it doesn't matter.

Some of the Other Machines I've Used:

I've had an older version of this machine for 7 years!

I just took out & cleaned the brew group on my saeco vienna plus for the first time, and i noticed on the bottom of it and a little on the lower sides there was a fair amount of sticky gel, is that somehow from the coffee or is that just like a gel that is put in from the maker to help with lubrication or something. should i try cleaning it all off? or just leave it because it helps the machine work right. thanks!!

techkathy The gel is food safe lubricant. Leave it on the brew unit. It keeps the machine from squeaking while brewing and keeps the brew unit motor from becoming too strained. Click on the link below to see a short video on the lubricating process.

I just got this saeco a few days ago and have made about 10 shots so far on the 4-5 grind level & pretty much every other time i press the brew coffee button it will give me the red error light which according to the directions means no beans or no water, but both are full. i dont know what to do after this other than to turn off the machine & try again. is this just normal for the first several uses of a new machine? or should this not be happening, because this is getting a little annoying on a $400 machine for this to happen on 50% o more of its use. the beans im currently using are "Segafredo Zanetti Espresso Casa Whole Bean" which should be appropriate. thanks for your help.

techkathy There is a cap in the grinder that covers the small hole leading to the grinder. Sometimes beans will have trouble feeding under this cap. Oilier beans tend to stick together and cause bridging before the beans slide under the cap. Use fewer beans in the hopper for now. As the bean hopper becomes seasoned over time, the beans will feed in smoothly.

I have a Saeco Sirena & I love my Capachino's in the AM & late evening. I'm in the market for another and have been looking for some time when I came across this machine on immediately went to Saeco to research. I'm on my 2nd machine in 15 yrs & Saeco has taken great care of me with any issue! how can you sell this machine for such low cost of buying it from Saeco & what is the difference in the 2 machines. . is there much comparison to this machine and the Sirena. Mine does not have the option to grind but my next one will. Thank you in advance.

A A Rhonda,
I am glad you have had a great experience with Saeco! They make some great machines and have treated our customers very well when we have had to refer them. As far as the difference between the Sirena and the Vienna: The Sirena is a semi auto, while the Vienna is a Super Auto. Like you said, your next machine will grind the beans for you, and that is a key feature in a Super Auto machine. The best thing about any super auto is the consistency. You can bet you will get a solid shot time and time again, as it takes all human error out of the equation. A Semi Auto is going to give you more freedom to pull a great shot, but it requires a lot of time as you already know.

I'm interested in both this, and the Breville XL espresso machines, but I'm wondering how the cleaning differs for each using the urnex? I've been a barista using a few diff types of machines, and with the Breville type I'm assuming I'd deposit the urnex into the group head and back flush? But how about with this model?

Kristen C With the Saeco Vienna Plus, you would mix the Urnex directly into your water tank and run the machine through descaling mode. Please let us know if you have any further questions.

You need to turn the machine off each time. That being said I do not think you are going to find a better super automatic at this price. I have always been a fan of this machine.

The answers given to Gabrielle and Linda regarding making an Americano seem to differ. One says you can adjust the size of the cup up to 8 oz. The other says you need to add hot water with the steam wand. Which is correct?
Thanks,
Karen

mjackson ♦ Karen,
Well they are both sort of correct. You can make a cafe crema which means water is pushed through the grounds and it makes a great cup of fresh brewed coffee. To make a true Americano you would brew the shot and add hot water to it. I really like the Cafe Crema better. I hope this helps and it is a great machine for the money.

Does this machine make a 6 ounce or larger cup of coffee as well as espresso shots? If yes, can you brew either kind with just the touch of a button or is reprogramming required? Can you control the amount of steam that comes out or is it just an on/off option?

0

Vote

0

mjackson ♦ Gabrielle,

It will make both a coffee and an espresso. You can program the amount of water for both. You can set the volume for what ever you want up to about an 8 oz cup of coffee. You can also adjust the grind and the amount of coffee for your drinks as well. The steam you shut off manually and you need to turn it on as well as stop it.
