Features

Super automatic espresso machine are designed to do everything – grinding, tamping, and brewing – from start to finish without any hassle. The Saeco Talea Touch Plus is made with superior materials, and has an easy-to-use touch screen that simplifies your programming choices so there’s never any question about your café style drink. The programmable monochrome touch screen does away with confusing buttons and lights, instead displaying options in easy to understand pictures and text on a large, clear touch screen. Selecting your options has never been so easy. Below the touch screen, the Saeco Brewing System knob allows you to change the strength of your brew. The Rapid Steam system allows you to go from brewing to frothing without wait time, and the optional Saeco Milk Island connects to your Touch Plus for automatic frothed and steamed milk. You can also use the steam wand to create your own milk-based drinks. The silver and graphite colored machine is elegantly housed and easy to clean.

The Touch Plus doesn’t cut any corners when it comes to a great shot of espresso. After you fill the bean hopper with coffee beans, the built in grinder grinds the beans consistently and finely using ceramic burrs. The grounds are then “pre-infused” with water to moisten them and bring out the depth of their flavors and oils. A stainless steel boiler heats the water, while 15 bars of pump pressure provide more than enough power to pull a great shot of espresso. Don’t worry about the espresso cooling once it has been dispensed – the cup tray can be raised and lowered so the cup is closer to the dispenser, a cup warmer on top of the machine helps keep the espresso’s temperature stable. Once the shot is brewed, the Touch Plus automatically disposes of the used coffee grounds into an internal dump box, which holds enough for you to brew 14 shots.

Features & Benefits: Coffee

Touch Screen Programming

When you look at the touch screen, you will see 4 icons: a steam whistle in the top left corner, then a small cup (espresso), a larger cup (coffee), and a tall cup (long coffee) lined up below. Press the icon you want, and to make 2 drinks, press the icon twice. The darkness or lightness of the cups represents the strength of the brew (mild, medium, or strong), which can be programmed by holding down the beverage icon for 2 seconds. Below the cups on the screen are “show text,” the date and time, and “go to menu.” Press “show text” to view the screen in text-only formatting, press the date and time to enter the clock menu, and press “go to menu” to enter the programming menu.

Incredible Options

Don’t limit yourself when you buy an espresso machine. A steam wand allows you to create any number of drinks that use foamed and steamed milk, such as cappuccinos, lattes, and macchiatos. Or you can vary your morning drink by choosing espresso, coffee, or long coffee, then changing its size and strength. For the non-coffee drinkers in the house, a hot water dispenser is great for tea, hot chocolate, soup, and instant oatmeal.

Stainless Steel Boiler

The double boiler system on the Saeco Talea Touch Plus means that you don’t have to wait when you move between brewing and steaming. Stainless steel is known for its durability as well as its ability to heat quickly and evenly. A boiler pressure safety valve and a double safety thermostat prevent the boiler from reaching excessive temperatures or pressures.

Light Touch Drip Tray

Place your finger gently on top of the drip try lever, and the drip tray moves down. Place your finger below the drip tray lever and push gently, and the drip tray moves up. This “light touch” drip tray is fully adjustable for cups of different sizes.

Saeco Brewing System (SBS)

For an immediate difference in the strength of your coffee, Saeco designed an SBS knob located on the coffee-dispensing spout. Turning the knob to the right results in a stronger coffee, and to the left a milder one by changing the water pressure on the grounds. It may be adjusted before or during brewing, giving you great control over your brew.

High Quality Ceramic Burr Grinder

A high quality burr grinder is key to a flavorful, crema-topped shot of espresso. If a low quality blade rather than burr grinder is used, the grounds become heated from the friction, degrading their taste; it also chops the grounds inconsistently, so your brew may taste either over extracted, or weak. This is why the Saeco Talea Touch Plus’ high quality burr grinder – which works using stationary burr and a rotating burr – is so important. It grinds beans to a uniform size, all while reducing or eliminating the effects of friction and static charge to produce 7-10.5 grams of ground coffee. The Touch Plus’ grinder can be set to fine, medium, or coarse using the included key to adjust it.

Bypass Doser and Bean Hopper

There are many advantages to grinding your own beans. Most importantly, once beans are ground they degrade quickly, often losing their flavor after no more than 2 days. The Saeco Talea Touch Plus grinds only as much as you need for the freshest cup of coffee. The beans are stored in an airtight bean hopper, which protects them from the damaging effects of moisture and air. Of course, sometimes your guests may prefer another kind of bean to what is in your bean hopper, such as decaf or a flavored blend. In that case, the bypass doser allows you to pour in any kind of ground coffee and brew using that instead of what is in the bean hopper. Simply press and hold the icon corresponding to the type of beverage you would like to brew (espresso, coffee, or long coffee). From the “coffee settings” menu that appears, select “pre-ground coffee,” and the machine will brew using the grounds in the bypass doser.

Cup Warmer

When you brew a shot of espresso nice and hot, you want it to stay that way. That’s why the Saeco Talea Touch Plus has an active cup warmer to preserve the espresso’s flavors by keeping them warm. Of course, some people prefer to heat their cups with hot water, or even by putting it in the microwave, which is why the Saeco Talea Touch Plus has different options. To set the cup warmer to your preferences, press “go to menu” on the touch screen, then press “machine settings,” and then “cup warming surface.” You can always use the arrow on the bottom to go back, or the “x” to exit out of the menu. Now that you’re in the “cup warming surface” menu, you can choose “always on,” “always off,” or “off while in stand-by."

PreBrewing

PreBrewing, or pre-infusion, is a process by which the grounds are dampened with water for a few moments. This often-overlooked step brings out more of their flavors and depth for a great shot of espresso. The Saeco Talea Touch Plus comes with the prebrewing set at normal, but you can adjust the settings to “strong” (which soaks the grounds longer) or “off,” if you wish to deactivate the prebrewing step.

Housing and Construction

Housed in silver and graphite, the Saeco Talea Touch Plus fits in well to different settings such as home kitchens and workstations. The touch screen has simplified the look of the machine by making buttons obsolete, so only the SBS knob and touch screen are left on the front. The touch screen is large for easy display and programming.

Features & Benefits: Milk and Hot Water

Steaming and Frothing Wand

To use the steaming and frothing wand, press the steam icon on the menu, select “steam,” and turn the steam knob until the steaming/hot water position is reached. Steam will begin dispensing out of the wand to froth or steam beverages. When you have finished, turn the steam wand until it is in the rest position, as indicated by the dark circle, and press “exit” on the touch screen to return to the menu.

Optional Milk Island

If you prefer automatic frothing and steaming, a great addition to the Talea Touch Plus is the Milk Island. It holds up to 13.5 oz of cold milk, and froths and steams at the touch of a button. A black steam hose included with the Milk Island hooks up to the Saeco Talea’s steam output, located on the left side. Press “steam” in the menu, turn the knob to the “milk island” icon, and automatic frothing and steaming begins. The Milk Island will stop automatically after dispensing steam continuously for 2 minutes.

Hot Water Dispenser

The steaming and frothing wand can also dispense hot water. Simply press the steam icon, and select “hot water dispensing.” Turn the steam knob until the steaming/hot water position is reached and hot water is dispensed. Once you have enough water, turn the knob until it is in the rest position and press “exit” to return to the menu.

Features & Benefits: Cleaning and Maintenance

General Cleaning

The removable 57 oz water tank is easy to hand wash with soap and water. It is located on the left hand side of the machine, and has a handle for easy removal. The drip tray is easily removed, and can also be hand washed. On the right of the machine is the grounds drawer, which should be emptied and cleaned regularly. To keep your steam spout functioning at optimum condition, remove the outer steam spout and clean. You should also remove and wash the steam spout support to keep your milk tasting fresh. The touch screen can be wiped with a dry cloth.

Water Filter

The included Aqua Prima water filter improves the quality of your water while extending the life of your machine. The manual gives detailed instructions on how to install it so the machine will inform you when it needs to be replaced.

Water Hardness Function

Your Saeco Talea Touch Plus can be adapted to the hardness degree of the water you use. This will lead to proper descaling. Water hardness is measured on a scale of 1-4, and each machine is preset at the value 3. Use the included water hardness tester to find the hardness of your water. On the touch screen, press “go to menu.” Press “machine settings,” then “water settings,” then “water hardness.” Set the water hardness by pressing “+” or “–”.

Descaling

Over time, impurities in your tap water can cause damage to the boiler and brewing components. Descaling counteracts those effects. It is necessary every 3-4 months, or when the machine indicates it. Before descaling, make sure that that water filter is removed. To descale, press “menu” in the main menu, then “maintenance settings,” then “boiler descaling cycle.” The machine will ask, “Do you wish to perform the descaling cycle?” Indicate “yes,” and follow the steps outlined in the manual to complete the descaling cycle.

Brew Group

The brew group should be cleaned regularly in order to keep your coffee tasting fresh. To begin, remove the grounds drawer located on the right side of the machine. Now you can access the brew group, which can be removed by pressing the “PUSH” button. Wash and dry the brew group, then replace.

Accessories

The Saeco Talea Touch Plus comes with an Aqua Prima water filter, water hardness tester, cleaning brush, measuring scoop, grinder adjustment key, and detailed owner’s manual.

Susan Dynarski I have a month-old Talea Touch Plus. I perform the recommended weekly maintenance. It has worked perfectly up to now. I am now getting a "prime water circuit" message. I have run a full tank through the hat water want, turned off and unplugged, rinsed everything and put it back together. Same message. Help?

Mark Jackson You need to keep running the hot water until the message disappears. You may also want to try and descale it as well. Usually the hot water trick will work. Call us if you need more help.

Tech Milano We would recommend trying the Super Automatic Sampler (found here: http://www.wholelattelove.com/wll/pk_sampler.cfm ) and then choose the one you like. You can then order that coffee separately. =)

If you would like to know a little about the many types of espresso machines we sell, this would be a good video to get you started. This video covers the machines we sell and based on your lifestyle, what you like to drink, and ease of use. It will give you an overview of different espresso machines and help you determine which one best suits to your needs.

I would watch the video and focus on a particular kind of machine—prosumer, semi-automatic, and super-automatic to decide which kind is ideal for you. Then, you can go and look at individual models to get a better idea of exactly what you want. Of course, if you narrow it down to a few espresso machines and are still undecided, give us a call and we would be glad to help!

Have had for 4 days. After setting all the settings to strong and hottest, it has done very well in terms of both coffee crema (cup of coffee but with espresso style extraction) and espresso. The crema is thick and rich and the flavor is very good. Had a Saeco Magic+ SA for 11 years which ran just over 13,000 shots according to its screen (which seems about right), so I know that Saeco can make good machines. I am not sure I trust their automatic adjustment on the grinder as it has started coming out slowly today, but it has a key for adjusting it manually. We use a very dark roast (and oily) Peetes blend just as we did in the other one. Steam wand uses a panarello style (pulls in air by venturi effect) and it seems to work fine. Steam takes a little longer to actually start, but does not seem to overly long.

7/10 - We bought this machine on sale in Jan 2010 and so far we love it. It makes lattes quickly and quietly. We are latte drinkes so we haven't used all of the other features. The user interface is great in that it tells you when something needs to be done, i.e., when the machine needs water, etc. So far we've had no electronic or mechanical problems, although I'm glad we got the 2 year warranty. We really hesitated to spend so much $$ on a latte machine but so far we are pleased with what we've got.

I've had the machine for 3 months now and I used this site when I was considering buying it so I thought I'd let others know of my opinion. The Good: The Talea is easy to use and makes pretty good espresso - Better than my previous seaco machines and better than my father's Delongi. It's easy to clean and after 3 months averaging 4 espresso's a day is working as it should. The Bad: The water is not hot enough for my taste and I have all the setting on high. One workaround I use is to run a blank shot through the bypass which adds a few degrees to the shot. I do this everyday which I also hope helps to keep things clean. My other gripe is the water tank, grids drawer and drip tray are all very small I am always tasked with one chore or another everyday. Bottom Line: I like the machine and hope I can get 3 solid years out of it like I did my other machines.

How do I make a hotter cup of coffee? click to open/closeopen and close answer
  • You can increase the temperature of your drink anywhere from 10-20 degrees by adjusting the machine’s temperature settings and ensuring that all of your brewing components are preheated properly:

    1. If your machine has adjustable temperature, enter into the machine’s menu mode and choose the temperature setting you want.
    2. While in menu mode, verify that the rinse mode is turned on. The rinse feature runs a quick dose of hot water through the brew spout upon startup. This helps to warm up the internal components of the machine, and also rinses away any coffee build-up that might alter the taste of your espresso.
    3. Run water through your hot water spout and into your cup. This accomplishes two things- It helps to preheat the internal components and it heats the cup as well.

If you're talking espresso, and using ceramic cups, pre-heat your cup. 1 oz of espresso in a cold cup = 1 cup of tepid espresso.

What is the SBS brewing system? click to open/closeopen and close answer
  • The SBS brewing system adds an extra level of control by letting you increase or decrease the flow rate of your espresso. A decreased (restricted) flow will give you a stronger, more robust flavor, since the water and grounds are infusing for a longer period of time. If you have a very robust bean, but want a mild brew, you simply turn the dial counterclockwise so the water flows faster.

Question Submitted by Tech Kathy
My steam wand still heats the milk but it won't froth click to open/closeopen and close answer
  • There are several possible causes of this problem. Please follow the instructions below to solve it.

    Solution 1

The most common solution to this problem is to ensure that the inner piece of the frothing wand is properly in place. To do this, follow these instructions:

Note: Your wand may look slightly different than the wand pictured in the diagram, but the same instructions apply.

    1) Remove the black plastic outer sleeve of the Frothing Wand (some models have a metal outer sleeve). If done correctly, the “sleeve” has been removed, but the inner wand with red or black washer, is still connected to the machine.
    2) The part of the sleeve assembly that you have removed is comprised of 2 pieces, the frothing sleeve and the center piece. The center piece can be seen if you look into the top of the wand.
    3) Using a pencil (eraser end), or similar shaped object, push down on the center piece until an audible “click” is heard. The “click” means that the centerpiece is back into the proper position. When in the proper position, the center piece visibly sticks out the bottom of the sleeve about ¼-inch. It looks like a bird beak.
    4) Now put the sleeve back on the machine and your machine should be ready to froth again.
Note: To prevent clogging, purge the steam wand after frothing milk and wipe off any excess milk with a wet cloth. We still recommend a thorough cleaning periodically as the milk can still build up inside the wand. The wand can easily be taken totally apart for cleaning.

    Solution 2

The second most common solution to this problem is that the pinhole near the tip of the Frothing Wand has become clogged. If this happens, the machine will heat the milk but no froth will form. To fix this, follow these instructions:

    1) Remove the black plastic outer sleeve of the Frothing Wand (some models have a metal outer sleeve). If done correctly, the “sleeve” has been removed, but the inner wand with red or black washer, is still connected to the machine.
    2) Hold the Frothing Wand in your hand so you can see the top portion clearly (the top being the part that usually attaches to the machine, and the bottom is the part that goes into the milk).
    3) There is a single pinhole on the side of the Frothing Wand about ¼-inch down from the top. It is very small—literally a pinhole. You will need to clear this out. A sewing needle or pushpin is small enough to fit through. Make sure this is thoroughly cleaned out.

    Solution 3

If the first two solutions do not work, you may need to replace your frothing wand. Visit our Parts page below to purchase a replacement.

As long as you are purging and wiping down immediately you should not have to remove after every use. I’d recommend soaking it in a dish detergent once a week for a ½ hr or so and then rinsing thoroughly. Hope this helps. Happy Brewing.

If you purge the wand and wipe it down immediately does it still need to be removed and cleaned after every use?

How do I change the grind setting? click to open/closeopen and close answer
  • The grind settings on this machine can be adjusted by using the "adjustment pin" located inside the coffee bean hopper. The pin is accessible when the bean hopper is empty or almost empty. To adjust the grind setting, use the included "grinder adjustment key" to press down into the pin. Turn the key one notch at a time to change the grind setting to fine, medium or coarse. You will need to brew 2-3 cups of coffee before the new grind setting can take effect.

How do I empty the drip tray? click to open/closeopen and close answer
  • This machine actually has two separate drip trays. You have probably already emptied the drip tray that is built into the motorized cup tray on the front of the machine. There is also an internal drip tray located beneath the brew group, and that is the drip tray that the message refers to. To access it, open the service door on the right side of the machine. You will see the drip tray next to the dump box, directly underneath the brew group. Remove and empty the drip tray. Replace it and the message will go away.

Question Submitted by Michael Yard
Why does my machine keep asking me to empty the dump box? click to open/closeopen and close answer
  • Your machine is designed to count how many shots you’re brewing and then tell you to empty the dump box when it reaches the maximum shot count. The machine does not weigh the dump box or use any sensors to verify if it is in fact full, so if you empty the dump box before it asks you to, it will continue counting.

For example, if it reads "empty dump box" when there is only one puck in there, then you simply need to reset the machine so it can begin counting your shots properly. To do this, just remove the dump box while the machine is on and giving you the "empty dump box" message. Then, leave it out for about 30 seconds so that the machine knows to reset the count to 0. Finally, replace the dump box and the message should go away.

If this does not solve the problem, contact us and we will help you test the micro switch to make sure it is working properly.

how do I get stronger shots? click to open/closeopen and close answer
  • In order to get the maximum strength/flavor from your machine, follow these steps:

    1. Depending on your machine, increase the fineness of your grind by changing your grind setting to a low number or small dot.
    2. Reduce the water volume to 1 oz.
    3. Adjust the amount of ground coffee used for each shot (up to 9 grams at the maximum setting).
    4. If you want to brew more than 1 oz, press the brew button twice and the machine will go through 2 brew cycles automatically.
