Features & Benefits: Coffee
LCD Screen and Control Buttons
The large LCD screen is backlit, and spells out the necessary information in an easy to read font. Forming a half circle around the screen are 5 buttons for cleaning, steam, large coffee, espresso, and coffee. Each is clearly labeled with an icon. To power the machine there is an on/off switch located in the back.
The SM 5000 Digital is more then just an espresso machine – it’s really a full-service coffee center because it produces steam so you can foam milk for a cappuccino, latte, or macchiato, and it has an automatic hot water dispenser for fans of tea and hot cocoa. As for drip coffee lovers, you can use the Solis Master 5000 Digital for a “crema coffee,” an espresso brewed to fill a regular coffee mug. You’re sure to win over persnickety guests with the crema’s deep aromas and flavors.
Push Button Technology
Just press the corresponding button for a coffee, espresso, or large coffee and the machine will automatically grind, tamp, and extract the coffee to your desired taste. When the coffee is finished brewing it will dump the spent coffee grounds into an internal dump box for later disposal. Depending on the size of the coffee, brewing can take only 35 seconds. If you want two drinks, press the button twice and the volume will be doubled.
The LCD display will show you in a simple font what is happening with the machine. It will tell you when to add beans, add water, when to decalcify, if the brew group is inserted incorrectly, if the dump box is full, if cleaning is necessary, automatic rinsing, language, and more. Easier to understand than a myriad collection of indicator lights and buttons, you’ll always know what’s going on with your machine.
Professional Conical Burr Grinder
Conical burr grinders use a stationary burr and a rotating burr to crush the beans consistently and without creating too much damaging friction. The SM 5000’s grinder comes preset from the Solis factory in Switzerland at 8, but you can turn it from 1 (fine) to 18 (coarse) in order to find the grind size that’s right for you. Another knob allows you to adjust the “dosing,” or amount of espresso used per shot, from 6 to 9 grams. The bean hopper holds 10.5 oz of whole beans and protects them from the damaging effects of light, moisture, and air with a heavy-duty plastic cover.
Adjustable Beverage Volume
Each beverage button comes with a preprogrammed volume, but you can change it easily. Just press and hold the button corresponding to the beverage you want to adjust. Your drink will begin dispensing – release the button when you have your desired volume. The machine will now brew to your newly set volume.
Entering into Programming
Entering the programming menu allows you to view the total number of drinks brewed, and adjust the settings for language, water hardness, temperature, pre-infusion, pregrinding, descaling, and the timer. Press the steam button until the words “Language … Water Hardn” appear on the LCD screen. At this point, you can scroll through the different options using the coffee and espresso buttons for up and down, respectively. You can exit the menu at any time by pressing the large coffee button.
The Master 5000 Digital has a convenient pregrinding cycle that will allow you to set the machine to pregrind after your last coffee extraction. This ensures the machine is ready for the next person without going through the grind cycle. You can turn it on or off in the programming menu.
Pre-infusion is a step that takes place before brewing begins. Hot water is injected into the grounds, soaking in for a few seconds before the brewing cycle starts. This brings out the depths and aromas of the flavor of the grinds. Enter into the programming menu to turn pre-infusion on or off.
Features & Benefits: Frothing and Hot Water
The patented frother design makes frothing for a cappuccino and steaming for a latte simple – and don’t worry about running out of steam because the SM 5000 comes with a heat exchanger boiler system. Press the steam button, and wait until the words “Steam … Ready For Use” appears on the LCD screen. At that point, you can open up the steam knob located on the right side of the machine, and foam and steam milk. Close the steam knob to stop the steam, and press the steam button again to switch off the steam function.
Hot Water Dispenser
The hot water dispenser is convenient for soup, tea, or a café americano. As long as the machine is warmed up, you can place a cup under the hot water dispenser and open the steam knob for instant hot water. When you have enough water, close the steam knob to stop the flow of water.
Features & Benefits: Care, Maintenance & Other
Removable Water Reservoir
The 64 oz reservoir is located on the left side of the Solis Master 5000 Digital. You can remove it and refill at the tap, or lift up the cover and refill it in place. The LCD screen will notify you when it runs low. For the best tasting coffee, remember to clean the water reservoir by hand with hot water and a non-abrasive detergent.
Removable Brew Group and Drip Tray
The brew group is easy to remove. Just open the side door on the right and remove with the thumb release lever, then rinse under running water. The removable drip tray has an indicator that rises to the surface when the drip tray needs to be emptied. Wash out your drip tray by hand with hot water and non-abrasive detergent.
Auto Decalcifying Cycle
Over time, impurities in your tap water can cause buildup on the brewing components. Descaling removes this buildup for proper functioning. When descaling is necessary, usually once every 3 to 4 months, the LCD screen will notify you. For detailed instructions on how to descale, including the recommended buildup on the brewing components. Descaling removes this buildup for proper descaling agents, check the Solis manual.
Internal Dump Box
The dump box for spent coffee grounds is located inside the machine and easily accessed by sliding it out from the side of the machine on the right. The LCD screen will indicate when the dump box needs to be emptied – that too should be washed out with hot water and non-abrasive dish detergent.
About once a month, Solis recommends running a deep cleaning cycle. It only takes about 5 minutes and a few simple steps, but it works well to remove coffee oils from inside your machine. Once a month is also how often you should clean the coffee dispenser – just use some warm water to wipe it down.
The Solis Master 5000 Digital comes with a cleaning brush, cleaning tablets, water hardness test kit, brew system maintenance tool, and detailed step-by-step instructions.
