jamie cunningham Is this safe? The packet says that it is toxic if swallowed so I am hesitant to use it on my Saeco machine. Thanks

Mark Jackson Jamie, It actually is OK to use as it made of citric acid a commonly used item available at any drug store. It is safe if used properly. It is of course not meant to be taken directly. It can be used and safely, if done properly as with most cleaners.

Jerry Muller Can this be used to descale the Gaggia Brera? If not, is there some other scaler that you recommend. Jerry Muller

Mike R Hi Jerry. Dezcal can be used to descale the Brera. We usually recommend using Urnex Cleancaf for a regular descale cycle every 3 months, and then Dezcal 1 of the 4 in a year. Basically, Dezcal is to Cleancaf what Shock for a pool is to Chlorine.

Jennifer White I own a Gaggia Titanium super automatic. I've used the Urnex Cleancaf product from the start. I like the idea that Dezcal is biodegradable and non-toxic. What is the difference in the two products and would one be more appropriate for my machine?

Michael Rosso Jennifer...Urnex Cleancaf is a citrus based descaling agent. Thanks.

don loncasty can i use dezcal in a jura ena3? they say use their own descaler .. are they pretty much the same?

Mark Jackson Don, Tough question I would probably say yes. But they actually have specific tablets that are formulated for them and to work in their machines using their built in descaling programs. I know this system works and works very well. I am not sure if another type of product would work as well.

Vincent Campanaro Hello, I just purchased the Giotto Evaluzione espresso machine and noticed that the machine comes with the Urnex Cafiza Cleaner do I need to purchase Dezcal also? I live in a very hard water area and want to make sure I appropriately care for the machine, Also if I need to purchase the Dezcal does it come in larger qunities then the singal pack? Thanks

Zack Smith Vincent, With the prosumer machines you will need to backflush the machine with Cafiza. You should use this to ensure that your machine stay in top condition. The Cafiza will work to clean your machine and you will not need to use the dezcal.

Urnex Grindz: No More Oil!

At some point in our espresso and coffee grinder buying adventures, all of us have been forewarned to avoid using oily beans in our newly purchased grinders. The first question you may ask is, "How do I know if the beans I'm using are oily?"

While there technically isn't a universal scientific answer to this question, one might determine how oily a bean is simply by looking at the sheen on the beans surface. If the bean has an extremely shiny appearance, you can assume it is oily. While many espresso beans will have a glossy appearance to them, you were likely advised to avoid the extremely oily offenders—for example, one of Starbucks' dark roasts. Next time you are in a Starbucks, have a look and you will see that they are practically dripping with oil.

"But, I enjoy Starbucks," you might say. Not to fear, here enters Urnex Grindz.

Urnex Grindz is an all-natural and food-safe grinder cleaner comprised of grains, cereals and binders that are in the shape of a coffee bean. This product is great for removing oil residue and odors that are left on the burrs. As a regular course of maintenance, I use a packet of Grindz once a month; but if you are using a more oily variety of bean, like a Starbucks or Peets, it should be used on a weekly basis.

Urnex GrindzAll you have to do is run your grinder until it is empty of beans then add a packet of Urnex Grindz and activate the grind cycle. A medium grind setting works best when using this product. Once the Grindz have been ground, purge the excess product by adding a couple scoops of sacrificial coffee beans to the hopper and grinding them through.

Urnex Grindz works by soaking up the oil and flavor residue as it's being ground through your grinder. Not only does this prevent flavor transfer, if you're switching between flavored and unflavored coffee, using Grindz on a regular basis can actually prolong the lifespan of your machine. So, don't shy away from a dark roast; use Urnex Grindz and fear the oily beans no more.
