Meet Mr. and Mrs. Smith. Every evening, the Smiths and their friends, the Joneses, drive to their local coffee shop to purchase lattes, and return home to take a leisurely walk through their neighborhoods while sipping on their delectable drinks. One evening, Mr. Smith watched the barista at the coffee shop make his latte and started to think that maybe it was something he could do himself. So he went home and started researching his options on the internet.
While waiting in line at the coffee house the next day, Mr. Smith presented his idea to his wife, who wasn’t as enthusiastic about it as he was. "It’ll cost too much money and it’s way too much work," she said. Right about that time, they crossed paths with the Joneses and Mrs. Smith shared what she and her husband had been discussing. "She’s got you there," said Mr. Jones. "And think about all those coffee grounds in your kitchen! Yuck!" Mr. Smith felt defeated, but went home and continued to peruse his options online.
Then Mr. Smith stumbled across the super automatic espresso machines on Whole Latte Love. The more he read, the more excited he became. "It grinds all the beans internally and all you have to do is push a button," he told his wife that night. "No mess on your counter and no learning curve!" "But, the money, honey," she responded. If there are 454 grams of coffee in 1lb, and each drink uses 14 grams of coffee, the coffee itself would cost $0.46 per latte. As for the milk, the current national average for 1 gallon is $3. If there are 128 oz of milk in one gallon, and each drink uses 10 oz of milk, the milk would cost $0.23 per latte. That means that for us to purchase the same coffee and milk that goes into our lattes, we would only be spending $0.69 per drink, versus the $3.25 we pay the shop down the street. That’s a savings of $2.56 per drink!"
"Yeah, but you’re forgetting about the cost of the machine, dear," said Mrs. Smith.
"Think about it this way," he said. "If the cost for us to make our own drink is $2.65 less than buying one at the shop, then after not buying 100 drinks there, we’ve already paid off $265 of our own super automatic machine!"
Mrs. Smith didn’t look completely convinced, so Mr. Smith continued.
"Let’s think about the bigger picture," he said. "If we’re making two lattes a day, we’re using 28 grams of coffee and 20 oz of milk. There are 454 grams of coffee in 1lb, so we should use up a pound in about 16 days. This comes out to about $342.19 yearly. Since there are 128 oz of milk in a gallon, we would go through a gallon in about 6.5 days and spend $168.46 per year on milk. Now, the average cost of all the super automatic machines on Whole Latte Love’s website is $1090.67. (Before you freak out, let me finish, okay?) We should also include an Espresso Essentials kit so that we get a frothing pitcher and thermometer, which we’ll need for steaming and frothing milk, and a year’s supply of Cleancaf so we can keep the machine clean. Mrs. Smith looked at her husband with one eyebrow raised. "You spent an awful lot of time on this, didn’t you?"
"Yes, I suppose I did."
"Well, you forgot a few things."
"What?" Mr. Smith started shuffling through his papers, wondering what base he didn’t cover.
"The cost of the gas it takes us to drive there, the amount of time it takes us to get there, how much time we spend looking for a parking spot, how long we wait in line…I mean, God forbid they’re training someone there and we have to wait for them to make it! And what if the person who makes it doesn’t know…"
As she continued, Mr. Smith smiled to himself in triumph. Soon, a super automatic will be mine, he thought.
