And The Winner Is....

Thank you, to everyone who took the time to vote in our Memorial Day charity poll! Five hundred dollars was at stake for the charities, and we know you’ve been eagerly awaiting the results, so let’s get to it, shall we?

Our third runner up is Coffee Kids, with earning a respectable 22% of the votes.

Coming in second, with 27% of the votes, is The Nature Conservancy.

And, as an apt tribute on Memorial Day, Disabled American Veterans finished in first place, earning a whopping 51% of the votes.

Congratulations to our winner, regardless of which charity you voted for, I think we can all agree that Disabled American Veterans are very deserving, indeed.

Blog: Health Reasons To Drink Coffee - Part 1

By Denton

Waking up in the morning, I have only one thing on my mind: that first cup of hot coffee. The smell of the beans when they're being ground, the warm caramel chocolate color of the ground beans, the smell as the coffee brews. It's all part of my morning ritual that puts a smile on my face and gets me going. Ask anyone who knows me, I am a java junkie. Now, morning is not the only time I'm enjoying a hot cup. I'm a four to five cup-a-day person, sometimes more. Reports say that the percentage of Americans who enjoy a java treat is up to 87 percent, and gulp down an average of eight ounces a day! If you're among this percentage, don't feel guilty: studies are now showing that coffee can actually be good for you. Now I've had some pretty bad-tasting coffee before, but I don't think that counts as being "bad for you" unless you count the emotional disappointment. So let's talk about what is so "good for you". Looking around the Internet, I easily found a number of articles written about the subject just by Google-ing "coffee health"....

Sip, Sip Hooray For Wakey Wakey Label Contest Winner!

Steve Smock is definitely excited his oil painting, a depiction of three roosters seated around a table over steaming cups of coffee, will become the new label artwork for Whole Latte Love’s soon-to-debut breakfast blend, Wakey Wakey. Smock’s piece won our spring label contest, narrowly defeating the next closest finalist by 22 votes! A graphic designer by day, Smock has been painting seriously by night since 1990, beginning with commercial illustrations like this image and gradually moving to large-scale acrylic creations that can be up to nine feet tall. While he says winning the label contest is “very cool,” the Penfield, NY resident is even more excited about the other part of the prize he’ll receive: a new Gaggia Classic espresso machine....

Product Spotlight: Rancilio Silvia - Miss Silvia's Makeover

Rancilio SilviaSince her release in the late 1990s, Miss Silvia has been catering to the needs of espresso lovers worldwide. While some people turn to surgeons and scalpels to maintain their looks, our beloved lady has chosen to enlist the aid of the engineers and designers at Rancilio in her quest for perfection.Their efforts have resulted in a number of upgrades sure to delight true Silvia enthusiasts!

Taking cues from the needs and wants of loyal customers, the redesigned Silvia now comes standard with a double-sprouted commercial portafilter—a popular feature previously only available as an add-on. A bigger, articulating steam wand, capable of horizontal, vertical, and diagonal movements allows for greater range of motion—making life much easier when you're working with a taller cup or frothing pitcher.

Those of us, who tend to be klutzes or simply sleep deprived during the early morning hours, will be happy to find a larger protective grip on Miss Silvia's steam wand as a part of her makeover. This may seem like a minor detail, but believe me your fingers will thank you, big time, for keeping them protected from a hot steam wand....

World's Largest Robusta Crop Damaged By Rain

Coffee cropVietnam, the largest producer of Robusta beans, has been devastated by harvest rains, damaging roughly 15% of its crop. The harvest, completed in December 2008, yielded large quantities of black beans, which do not meet international standards and are usually thrown out. The Vietnam Coffee and Cocoa Association estimates that the bad bean count is nearly double that of previous harvests. This bad news has many experts forecasting a decline in Robusta futures.

Coffee is the second most-traded commodity on Earth, with petroleum holding the #1 spot. And, while most people may not equate Vietnam with coffee, the country has become one of the largest coffee exporters in the world—with Robusta being the main variety being cultivated. Due to its rising stature among the world's coffee exporters, Vietnam took a lot of heat, at the beginning of the 21st century, from some South American and African nations accusing the country of over-saturating the globalmarket, thus effectively driving down trading prices....
