Coffee Factoids: Does Your

We’ve all been there…ordering a cup of decaf at a hole-in-the-wall diner. The waitress looks as though she’s at the tail end of a 12+ hour shift and when the coffee finally arrives, you just have to wonder…is it really decaf?

Recipe Of The Month: Vanilla Frappe

With temperatures hitting 90° or even 100°F across the country, this summer calls for an ice-cold Frappe. If you’re looking for a delicious way to stay cool, check out one of my favorite recipes.

- 4 ounces of milk
- A Double Shot of Espresso
- 3 Ounces of Sweetened Condensed Milk
- 1 ounce of Vanilla Syrup
- Whipped Cream

Combine the milk, condensed milk, espresso and syrup in a blender. Add enough ice to fill a 20-ounce cup and blend. Pour the mixture into a tall cup and top with whipped cream.

Expert Answers: Gaggia Classic

Q: Can I leave the Gaggia Classic on when I’m not using it?

A: We recommend turning the machine off, if it will go unused for more than an hour or so. The Classic does not have an auto-fill function on the boiler. As the water evaporates over time, the machine will not refill itself, which can potentially cause some serious issues. However, the Classic does heat up fairly quickly (about 6 minutes), so re-heating shouldn’t be a huge time problem.

Product Spotlight: Consumer Digest Best Buy Awards: And The Winners Are...

Gaggia ClassicSome very good news came in the mail a few weeks ago. One of our most established semi-automatic espresso machines, a legend in its own right, the Gaggia Classic has earned some well-deserved accolades from a respected source. Also, honorable mention went out to machines from Krups and DeLonghi.

Consumers Digest, a review-based, consumer-interest magazine, has named the Gaggia Classic the Best Buy for the Premium Espresso Machine Category in its August issue. The Krups 5220, whose updated version is the XP5240 Pump Espresso Machine with Precise Tamp, was named the Best Buy for the Mid-Range Category. Rounding out the pack, the DeLonghi EC155 was awarded the Best Buy designation for the Economy Selection.

Machine features, ease of use as well as drink and construction quality were all taken into account for the Consumers Digest Best Buy Selections. All three award-winning machines can accommodate ESE pods and ground espresso; they also come with single and double-shot filter baskets. In addition, the Classic, 5220 and EC155 all feature 15-bar pumps and durable construction. So, with all due fanfare, let’s take a look at what the experts at Consumers Digest had to say about these standout machines…

Premium Best Buy - Gaggia Classic
The Gaggia Classic has been with us, at Whole Latte Love, since our company was founded in 1997. The Classic is a mainstay on the espresso scene. It has been praised by Consumers Digest, and countless others, for the innovative aluminum boiler, equipped with two powerful heating elements—allowing the machine to warm up quickly and maintain consistent brewing temps. In addition, the Classic is outfitted with a number of other features not commonly found in a consumer espresso machine including a three-way solenoid valve, as well as a large 64-ounce removable water reservoir....

Coffee Spotlight: Aloha Island
Aloha Island Coffee

"Shark Week" is fast approaching. For the uninitiated, the show that details one of the world’s deadliest predators has been a Discovery Channel institution since the late 80s. We’re joining the craze with a tropical coffee spotlight this month—Aloha Island, straight from the shark-infested waters of Hawaii.

Fintastic Finds
For the record, that’s Discovery Channel lingo, not ours. If you’re interested in trying one of Hawaii’s most famous exports, Kona coffee, Aloha Island is your go-to brand. With nine Kona coffee and espresso varieties to choose from, Aloha Island has a extensive selection to suit all tastes and budgets.

For uncompromising flavor and aroma, nothing compares to pure Kona coffee. Introduced to the Kona District of the Big Island of Hawaii in 1828, pure Kona coffee is a source of great pride for locals. Often imitated, but never duplicated, Kona coffee benefits from a unique environment, comprised of a mild, sunny climate and mineral-rich volcanic soil, which lend the coffee a smooth, well-rounded flavor profile, occasionally accentuated by notes of fruit and/or chocolate. Espresso lovers interested in pure Kona coffee should consider Aloha Island Gold Kona Espresso, Diamond Private Reserve or Pure Kona ESE pods (available in Decaf, Medium and Dark roasts). These certified 100% Kona, organic whole bean coffees are artisan handcrafted, pesticide free and low acid. Aloha Island carefully roasts premium Kona coffee in small 31-pound batches to ensure controlled, uniform results. Due to its prized beans and painstaking roasting process, Aloha Island espressos are some of our most popular luxury coffees.

Jawesome Java
Pure Kona can get a bit pricy, as it is a very rare coffee. If you’re looking for a more affordable option, consider a premium Kona blend. Aloha Island Diamond II, Espresso II and Estate Blend Decaf all feature Kona beans blended with carefully selected Hawaiian coffee to deliver great tasting drinks....

Health Report: Coffee and Tea Ward off Dangerous Bacteria

Coffee and TeaMethicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA) is a cluster of bacteria that may develop in the human nose. This common strain of staph is occasionally referred to as a “Super Bug,” due to its resistance to antibiotics. It can result in fatal infections when coming into contact with open wounds. Like most bacterial illnesses, MRSA is spread by skin-to-skin contact and exposure to contaminated surfaces.

The latest estimates indicate that almost 2.5 million people show evidence of MRSA within their nasal cavities. But, new research published in the peer-reviewed journal Annals of Family Medicine bears good news for hot coffee and tea drinkers—the greater the consumption, the lower the risk for MRSA. In fact, people who drank hot tea and coffee were 50% less likely show signs of the dangerous bacteria. Yet another reason to brew up your favorite drink!
