Being in the coffee business has many “perks”. Most of us, at Whole Latte Love, partake in a daily afternoon coffee break. The coffee ritual typically occurs around 2pm courtesy of our Expobar Brewtus in the kitchen. The sound of milk being steamed and shots being brewed can be heard throughout the office. What all our staff members do not know, is that this coffee break is doing more than just satisfying their taste buds; it is actually making them smarter and happier.

Recently, caffeine has been shown in studies to improve the speed and accuracy of certain intellectual tasks. Researchers at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine found that that caffeine helped improve workers' memory and concentration as well as reduced the number of mistakes they made.

There are specific parts of the brain that are stimulated by the caffeine, which resulted in better attention and concentration, increased ability to retain information, and in some case studies, improved handwriting. The areas of the brain most affected are the Frontal Lobes and the Anterior Cingulum. These areas are important for:

Working Memory- this is the kind of memory that’s important for problem solving.

Attention and Concentration the more you can focus and pay attention, the easier it is to learn and memorize information, as well as problem solve.

Coffee consumption can also make you happy. Ever notice that after a cup of coffee you feel rejuvenated and ready to take on the world? Caffeine has the ability to enhance mood, and mental and physical performance. “At consumption levels up to 200 milligrams (the amount in about 16 ounces of ordinary brewed coffee), consumers report an improved sense of well-being, happiness, energy, alertness and sociability”, reports Roland Griffiths of the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.

So next time you think you may want to skip your coffee break, think twice, it may help fuel your afternoon work performance.
