With the arrival of the Saeco Exprelia on the Super-Automatic Espresso Machine scene, I have received many calls asking, "What is the difference between the Saeco Exprelia and the Saeco Xelsis?” “They look almost alike."

Let me explain the very few differences between these two machines. First you should probably understand what is similar about them. Both of these machines use the same Saeco technology for brewing, cleaning and maintenance. They both have stainless steel boilers, and use the same 15 bar pump for brewing which is plenty of pressure to create the 8 to 9 bars required to brew quality espresso. The water reservoirs both hold a generous 54 ounces of water for brewing and steaming, and the milk carafe used by both these machines have the same 17.25 ounce volume.

Now let’s move on to the differences.

  • The Exprelia’s bean hopper holds 10.5 ounces of beans while the Xelsis holds 12.5 ounces.
  • The Exprelia’s dump box holds 11 pucks, and the Xelsis dump box holds 14 pucks.
  • The Exprelia weighs in at 31 pounds, and the Xelsis tips the scales a bit more at 35 pounds.
  • The footprint of an espresso machine can make a difference to some people. Let me give you the dimensions for both these machines so you can compare them. The Exprelia measures W 9.6”x D 14.2” x H 16.5”, and the Xelsis measures W 11.25”x D 14.5” x H 16.5”.
  • The biggest difference between these two machines is the number of different drinks they will make.
    • The Exprelia will make single or double espresso, Caffe Lungo, Speciality Coffee, and Cappuccino.
    • The Xelsis will also make single or double espresso, Caffe Lungo, Speciality Coffee, and Cappuccino, as well as Latte Macchiato, and Coffee Latte.
