When paired with a prosumer level machine like the Bezzera BZ13 DE Espresso Machine, we were impressed by how quick and easy it was to dial in delicious shots on a consistent basis. This is thanks, in large part, to the added precision offered by the stepless micrometric adjustment and a grind speed of 4 kg or 8.8 pounds per hour.

The Bezzera BB005 TM is an Italian-made, semi-professional conical burr grinder that comes in a compact design and is sturdy, simple to use and easy to clean.

How To Use Bezzera BB005 TM Coffee Grinder

Whether you’re a coffee grinding novice or seasoned veteran, getting top-notch grounds is a cinch with the BB005 TM.

First things first, you’ll want to want to clean the grinder be removing any retained coffee from previous grinds, as well as rotate the adjustment knob 20 or so times towards the “-” symbol. Then, locate the hopper on the top of the machine and remove the lid. Pour in your desired amount of whole beans and close the lid. Before grinding you’ll also want to set your grind size and grind time.

To set grind size, you’ll need to rotate the stepless adjustment knob, conveniently placed on the right side of the machine for easy access. When the adjustment knob is rotated, the motion causes the top burr to rotate closer or farther away from the bottom burr. Rotating in the direction of the “-” symbol will result in a finer grind, whereas rotating towards the “+” symbol will create a courser grind.

After a few trial-and error-grinds and brews, you should be able to find a perfect grind size for any type of coffee. Make note of these settings so you have something to refer back to when switching between grind sizes.

As an automatic timed grinder, the BB005 TM allows you to set the grind time for the motor to run. To set a desired time, adjust the dial with markings of “0,” as well as one, two and three dots. This denotes single, double and triple shots, respectively.

To activate the motor and begin grinding, all you need to do is press the switch on the front panel with your portafilter. You can stop the motor mid-grind if need be, but it’s important to note that you’ll need to either adjust the timer dial to “0” or flip the power switch off to safely do so.

After grinding, tamp your now-filled portafilter before securing it to your preferred espresso or coffee machine to start the brewing process.

Product Highlights

48 mm Conical Burrs

Uncommon for a grinder of it’s price, the BB005 TM makes use of a pair of conical stainless steel burrs to allow you produce consistently ground coffee that’s perfect for espresso extraction.

Unlike flat burr grinders which have two flat grinding discs, conical burr grinders consist of a pair of asymmetrical burrs. One burr is cone-shaped and is encompassed by the other is burr, which is ring-shaped. This results in heat reduction and a general reduction of coffee remaining in the grinding chamber.

High Speed vs Low Speed Grinders

As you begin to research grinders, to find the one that best fits your needs, you may come across ones that operate at different RPMs. What does this mean to you? Is it just another thing designed to make the research harder for the machine you’re dying to have on your counter, or just make things more complicated?

Longevity is also not a concern as the burrs are extremely durable and consistent. With a longer grind length and slower grind speed, fewer RPM are required per dose of ground coffee. These factors also result in a longer use rate, better dispersion of the heat created and less heat created overall. The slower grind speed also helps extend the life of the motors.

Micrometric Stepless Adjustments

Also uncommon for a machine in the price range of the BB005 TM is its stepless micrometric grind adjustment.

Stepless adjustment means there aren’t preset grind settings or “steps” to switch between. As for the term micrometric, this means that rather than directly adjusting the top burr, a small knob is rotated to make adjustments. For the BB005 TM, the adjustment knob is conveniently located on the right side of the machine for easy access.

When the adjustment knob is rotated, the motion causes the top burr to rotate closer or farther away from the bottom burr. This results in an unparalleled level of precision between burrs and an indefinite number of grind settings, albeit at the cost of being a more time-consuming process.

UV Protected Hopper

The first thing many people may notice visually with the BB005 TM is the UV protected blue-tinted hopper.

Located on top of the machine, the hopper holds up to 250 grams of whole beans. The blue-tint isn’t just for show, either. The color best reduces damage from internal refracted light to preserve bean quality.

Built-in Dose Timer

The built-in automatic dose timer allows you to customize how much ground coffee you need by picking a desired duration. To make use of the dose timer, the process is simple.

First, adjust the corresponding dial marked with “0,” one, two and three dots, for single, double and triple shots, respectively. The amount of ground coffee produced is roughly 6/8g for a single, 12/14g for a double, and 18/20g for a triple. This will vary slightly based on your grind size.

After setting the desired time, hit the switch located under the grind outlet chute with your portafilter to grind your shot automatically.

Compact, Stainless Steel Design

The BB005 TM incorporates a compact, stainless steel design that is seldom featured on a grinder at its price.

Not only will it look great in your home or office, the BB005 TM also utilizes a cast-metal base that provides a sturdy foundation, reduces vibrations and peace of mind from knowing it won’t easily tip over and cause a mess.

Easy Cleanup

A pair of less apparent features that help immensely with cleanup are the wide grinding chute and detachable bottom tray.

Once you’re finished grinding, give the nozzle a few taps to drop any retained coffee into the tray. Detach the tray and dispose of any collected coffee for a quick and painless cleanup.

Summary

It should be evident by now why we love the BB005 TM and we hope you have begun to realize why (or why not) it’s the coffee grinder for you.

Be it the 48 mm conical burrs, stepless micrometric grind adjustment knob, built-in dose timer or UV protected hopper, the BB005 TM offers an excellent array of features and has the ability to produce high quality grounds at an outstanding price.
