Gaggia Decalcifier
I have a Gaggia Classic. Although I have a sediment filter and UV filter, as well as running the water through a Brita before pouring into the machine, I recently noticed the telltale signs of iron bacteria in the reservoir. What product to you recommend for the iron in the water, as well as general cleaning and descaling?

Gaggia Decalcifier
OK, this ones really off the wall. My shipment of Gaggia Descaller has been trying to get delivered since last Friday, the 11th of January. It's now Tuesday the 15th. The outdoor temperature hasn't been above 25 degrees all this time and the lows have been as low as -15. Is the Gaggia Descaller affected by freezing temperatures?

Sanfam ♦ Jon, I'm not actually certain what the freezing point of this descaling solution would be--Nothing on any of the products we carry indicate a safe temperature range for the product. Generally speaking, products containing small amounts of citric acid have lower freezing points than normal--depending on the amount of descaling acids in this bottle, it could mean anything from a 10F reduction to 25F. As the bottle is flexible and has some empty space, I don't think this would pose any risk even if left to freeze into a solid block of descaler so long as you let it thaw before removing the cap.

Our well water is conditioned by a water softening system and we run that through a Brita pitcher before pouring into our Gaggia Brera. Do we really need to descale when the light goes on? The manual says the light goes on as a function of the volume of water that's been run through the machine - it doesn't seem to take the hardness of the water into account.

Descaling will help remove any buildup in the machine, not just scale build up. You don't have to do it every time/as soon as the light goes on, but doing it eventually is a great wait to make sure your machine lasts a long time.

Jon Robison One thing that's important to remember, even if you use distilled water (i.e. no mineral content), your machine will accumulate residue from the coffee/espresso you brew. This will get bad enough to clog any solenoid valves or small passages such that your machine won't work properly. These "deposits" will also adversly affect the flavor of the espresso you make. Hence, it can't hurt to "clean" your machine as often as recomended, even if for reasons other than "descalling".

Gaggia Decalcifier
I despirately need to clean my Gaggia Baby Twin. The portafilter has gotten pretty gross and I'm concerned the solenoid valve seat and pintle are also nasty. Which of the two cleaners do you recomend. I use only reverse osmosis filtered water so scale shouldn't be much of an issue, but the coffee "residue" in the above mentioned parts may be.

Both the Gaggia Decalcifier and the Durgol Swiss Descaler are great products. When I descale any machine, I tend to reach for the Durgol, but both products are very effective.

Gaggia Decalcifier
Hello! I'm wondering if I should use this or the gaggia/urnex tablets through my Gaggia Brera. It has been kept clean behind the doors/in the drip tray, but hasn't ever been descaled, in 1.5yrs. Are solutions/tablets for different purposes - such as backflushing/descaling? *Sometimes I think I can sniff a slight mold buildup even after flushing out the steam wand, which might have happened when my parents left poor B sitting unused for 6 months :(

mjackson ♦ The descaling solution is also a cleaner for your machine. The tablets will help keep your brew group clean. You can not backflush the machine. I would descale soon. You may also want to consider buying the Gaggia Intenza filters to help protect your machine as well.

The Gaggia Decalcifier is a great product, and will clean your machine right up inside. With all the filtration that you have going before the water even enters your machine, you should not have to descale it as often as you would if you were using tap water.
