Replace the worn or cracked group gasket on your Gaggia espresso machine with a new one! The first sign of age is leaking around the group during your extraction. I have been having the Gaggia Baby Class for only 2 months, and the portafilter has recently started to leak after brewing a shot (until i power it off). Am i doing something wrong. I tried cleaning the gasket, but got same results. I did not see any wear on the gasket.

I recently purchased replacement group gaskets for two 7-yr-old Gaggia Classics, and replaced the originals according to posted instructions - easy job. BUT the gaskets appear to be too thick. It's now very difficult to set the basket in place on one machine - I can get it a bit past the starting point but nowhere near 6 o'clock, even with a hard push. On the other machine, it's virtually impossible to set the basket. Online discussions are inconsistent about whether the gasket should be 8.5, 9 or 10 mm thick for the Gaggia Classic. Unfortunately the old gaskets are long gone in the trash.

The old gaskets were probably worn and much thinner then they were originally. New gaskets are thicker and usually do not allow the portafilter to turn all the way to the 6 o'clock position right away. They will wear in a bit with use. As long as there is a seal when you are brewing coffee, then you should be alright.
Sanfam ♦ One thing to consider when replacing a very old gasket is that any old gasket material left behind can result in high-spots, which can make tightening the filter difficult. A good plan when replacing the gasket is to make certain the seat is completely clean of any residual gasket material (Or "Small chunks of stuff" as it is often described). Finally, bear in mind that the new gasket is going to be more rigid and somewhat more thick than the gasket you just removed. This will begin to change over the next few weeks, but the first few days of use will be difficult.
Janet Smith Thanks for your suggestions. I took the coffee maker apart again to check for debris under the gasket - there was none. However, I noticed that the gasket is asymmetric - one side is beveled and the other isn't. It took about an hour on the web to find replacement instructions that even mention this. Turns out that the beveled side goes up towards the brew group and I had it in the other way around. I really wish all those people who put instructions on the web would include this information. The basket now sets fine - doesn't get to 6 o'clock, but it's easy to set the basket. BTW, it's a 9-mm gasket - I found a faint "9" on the rim.
After removing the shower plate, you may find the shower holding plate is stuck. Replacing the gasket is easier if you can remove the shower holding plate. Using needlenose pliers in the two allen bolt holes and rotating did not help me when mine was stuck. A tip that worked for me was to buy a...

You need to give us a call and we can get you the correct Expobar gasket. The Gaggia will not work.
I used to be able to buy a part for my Gaggia coffee (and Gaggia Espresso) that's a little rubber plug that sits on the end of the spring, that is accessed by unscrewing a little nut just above the screen. I can no longer find that part on your site or anywhere else. Any suggestions on where I can find that part? The symptom indicating it needs to be replaced is that the boiler empties (and drips out the portafilter) when the machine is turned on but the pump is not. When that happens, when I turn on the pump to brew a cup, the water runs through the boiler w/o heating up enough, and I get a very weak cup.

You may want to try cleaning it as it may be the problem. Here are the instructions. If it does nit work you can call our technical support and they will assist you in getting the parts you need.
Group Valve Assembly Cleaning Instructions
If you are able to get steam and hot water through the steam arm, but are unable to get water through the brew head, this will show you how to clean the Group Valve Assembly.
Please read the entire instructions before you start.
1. Unplug the machine – make sure that the machine is cool before beginning.
2. Remove the reservoir, drip tray, drip pan and reservoir cover and lay the espresso machine on its back.
3. Use a short Philips head screwdriver to remove the shower screen. If you damage the shower screen, call us to order a new one. They are not expensive. The shower screen screw is available too.
4. Under the shower screen you will see the “Shower Holding Plate” that is held in place with two Allen screws. Remove the two Allen screws with 5mm Allen wrench. If the shower holding plate does not come off when the second screw is removed then move on to step 5, otherwise move on to step 6.
5. The Shower Holding Plate should just drop out after you remove the Allen screws. If it does not, use a large flat blade screwdriver to gently pry out the Shower Holding Plate. Be careful not to damage the ridge that the shower screen fits up into. If you do, a new holding plate is available. It is part number GA-DY0036/A and is available as a replacement part. Just call us to order
a. Sometimes, the Shower Holding Plate is really stuck. To remove a plate that is stuck, you can use a pair of needle nose pliers. Open the pliers and stick the points into the holes where the Allen bolts were. Then turn hard. This should break the Shower Holding Plate free or loosen it enough to pry off. Clean out any build up that you see using a stiff brush and some descaler – the same kind you would use to descale the machine.
6. Now look up inside the brew group and you will see what looks like a bolt with a hole in it. Unscrew the bolt from the machine and you will see a spring with a rubber ball. If you do not see the spring and rubber valve seat you will have to take the bolt apart and you will find those parts inside the bolt. The piece at the very end looks like it is 2 nuts together. This can be unscrewed. Clean them with descaler and a brush thoroughly before putting them back together. (The group valve is also available to purchase if you need it – part number GA-EF0047/A)
a. It is possible that the “bolt” portion of this valve may be stuck or brittle and may break off while attempting to remove it. If this occurs, you will need to replace this assembly as a whole—the old parts will not be re-usable.
7. Now is a great time to test the machine to see if water will come out. Sit the machine back up and reinsert the water tank with some water. Now press the brew button. If you can get water to come out of the group head, this is a good sign. If nothing comes out, please call technical support.
8. This is also good opportunity to clean the shower screen and group head. The cleaner they are, the better your coffee will taste. DO NOT use a pin to clean out any holes in the screen. It can cause future clogs because it will enlarge the small holes. Make sure you can see through the holes in the shower screen. Be sure to scrub the screen well and make sure the holes in the shower holding plate clear also.
9. Now reassemble the group head in reverse order.
10. Tip the unit back up and install the drip pan, drip tray and water reservoir.
11. Fill the reservoir and plug the machine in and you are ready to go.
