Gaggia Unica Espresso Machine
HOw do you descale the unit? Does the descaling solution go in the water and get filled with water? And then which is the hot water function?

I just got the Gaggia Unica from you guys and am just getting used to it. After frothing the milk, the machine needs to cool down before it can return to coffee brewing mode, which it indicates by a blinking steam icon. How long is this supposed to take? It is taking upwards of 3 minutes for me, which is a long time to wait if I am making one cups worth of milk, which I then want to add coffee to. I suppose, I could reverse the order and use more containers, but thought I'd ask.

mjackson ♦ Peretz,
You will find it easier to brew coffee first. That would be my suggestion. It will be easier that way to heat it up for steaming.
How to descale the unica?! I have liquide descaling but how to start the process ,is it manual or automatic?

mjackson ♦ Zahi,
You need to do it manually. You need to put solution in the tank, add water . Then run the solution out the steam wand using the hot water function. Start it then let it sit for about ten minutes, then continue running hot water out of steam wand. When done with that then run clean water out about half a tank to rinse it all out then you are finished.
Just purchased a Unica, I have not used it in over 2 days, and it stopped working. The Empty/Insert coffee grounds drawer. Light is just solid. I am not sure what is causing this issue, I have removed and cleaned the Brew Group, and no matter what it just stays lit. Any ideas?

mjackson ♦ Paul,
It is tough to say what the problem is. You would be best served by calling our technical support line and they will be able to assist you. I am afraid I do not have a simple fix.
Just purchased this after our Syncrony died after 4-5 years of use. Have a few questions I hope you can answer:
1) Does using light or medium roast beans really make a difference to the life expectancy of the grinder ? How can you tell if beans are oily or not ?
2) On our old Syncrony I used to descale once a month and just wash out the brew and wand every weekend (we make 5-6 cups per day). I was planning on repeating this, however should I used the tablets for brew group ? If so, how often ?

mjackson ♦ Richard,
Good questions. The oily bean should not affect this grinder as much as the older metal burr grinders. But I still think the really oily beans may not be best overall for the machine. If the beans are really shiny then they are oily. Keep up on the cleaning as you were doing, you also may want to try using the Intenza filters as well. The tablets certainly help.
does this machine have temp controls, different grind settings, pre infusion, by pass doser, rapid steam? How big are the water n hopper? does the hopper vibrate to help beans into grinder? Can u change the setting temporarily and then it will go back to the original settings? does it have 18 bars of pressure?

mjackson ♦ Sheri,
It does have variable grind settings, it at most will give you 7 grams of coffee, the other Gaggias will give you up to 10.5 grams. It does not haev a bypass doser and also does not have Rapid Steam. It also does not have pre infusion. You may want to look at the Gaggia Brera to get the features you want. The hopper does not vibrate either. Get the Brera is my suggestion.
hello, instead of using decalcification, etc - can a gallon of distilled water be kept next to this Gaggia and used ? is this advisable ?

mjackson ♦ Ram,
You can use distilled water. It is interesting that some people think that ultra pure water is not the best. It is a good way to keep your machine clean and certainly will cut down on the need to descale. I would go ahead and use the water as it will prolong the life of your machine .
Hello,
We purchase a refurbished Unica about 1 month ago and yesterday it stopped grinding beans. It is going through the cycle but not grinding anything and then clear water comes out of the machine. What should we do first?
Thank you,

mjackson ♦ Jocelynn,
You may want to try making the grind coarser and see if that frees it up. You may also need to clean your brew group as well. I will email you somethings to try. If that does not help call our technical support line.
We are very happy with our Gaggia Unica. We need to do our first descale, but I'm not sure how much of the Gaggia 250 ml Decalcifier to use. Alternatively, do the Gaggia Coffee Clean Tablets work just as well? Finally, does the Mavea Water Filter definitely fit the Unica water holder?

mjackson ♦ Steven,
Use half of bottle of descaler. The cleaning tablets are really to use for the cleaning of the brew group. They really do not help the descaling process. Yes the Mavea filters will fit and do a great job of helping to keep your machine working properly.
I just read your page on the Gaggia Unico -- you say "small footprint", but its actually larger than the Vision!
Do you have any videos on it? Or one comparing it to the Vision?
I've been lusting after the Vision, but feel guilty since my old Gaggia Classic works fine.
Great website!! Keep up the good work
