I received my water softener on a plastic bag, and I noticed a bunch of grainy particles loose in the bag, that I imagine are the crystals that filter the water. Is that normal, is my softener leaking? Cheers

techkathy Gustavo - take the softener out of the bag and see if any additional crystals fall out of the bottom or pointed top of the softener. If they do not then you should be fine.

mjackson ♦ Rick,

It is easy to do and here is how. Charging the Rancilio Water Softener

The filter should be recharged at least once a month. To charge it for the first time, or to recharge it, follow these simple steps:
• The machine should be off and cold before following these steps.
• Prepare this solution: Mix three teaspoons of fine salt in a glass of water.
• Drain the water tank.
• Remove the water softener from the rubber tube and turn it over.
• Pour the solution through the filter and resin. It will flow freely.
• Let is sit for about 5 minutes, then run tap water through it to rinse it. When the water coming out of the softener is no longer salty, the resins are regenerated. Now the filter is ready for use.
• Put the softener back on the tube and press the bottom of the water softener into the bottom corner of the water tank on the “X”.

mjackson ♦ Zeljko,

It is a good question. I think it is important to charge your filter correctly following the directions below. If done properly then you will not damage your machine. I do not think the salt is an issue as it has been done for years using salt.

Hello Whole Latte Love,
I currently have The Expobar Office Control Espressor machine which I got two years ago.
I think I need to have the water filter or the water softener filter changed.

Would the Rancilio Water Softner fillter fit my model or do you recommend or stock the original Expobar brand if they make one?

Thank you,

David

mjackson ♦ David,

You do not need to replace the filter you just need to re-charge it. It is simple to do and I would do it about every 8- 10 weeks more or less depending on how hard your water is.

See instructions :

• The machine should be off and cold before following these steps.

• Pour the solution through the filter and resin. It will flow freely.
• Let is sit for about 5 minutes, then run tap water through it to rinse it. When the water coming out of the softener is no longer salty, the resins are regenerated. Now the filter is ready for use.
• Put the softener back on the tube and lay it horizontally in the bottom of the tank.
• The machine is now ready to be turned on and used again.

I ordered and received this item, but it had absolutely no packaging or paperwork with it - just the item in a box.

Can you please send me detailed instructions on how to use, install, re-charge, etc?

Not sure why absolutely nothing is/was included with it.

Regards,

MikeR The softener simply plugs into the end of the tube on the Silvia. The one that has a flat end, not the one with a cut end, that is the return line. Recharging instructions are about halfway down the page here: http://www.wholelattelove.com/tips.cfm?itemID=393&ConID=1#anchor

Tracys ♦ The water softener helps keep the amount of scale build up under control. It is attached to the end of the soft rubber inlet tube in your water tank. It looks like it is full of little crystal grains. The water softener should be cleaned and recharged about once every 1-2 months, or more frequently if you have a higher mineral content in your water. To charge it for the first time, or to recharge it, follow these simple steps:

The machine should be off and cold before following these steps.

1. Prepare a solution of 3 teaspoons of fine salt and 8 oz of water. Mix well.
2. Remove the water softener from the rubber tube by pulling the pointy end off of the soft rubber tube. Make sure you do not pull the end of the water softener off.
3. Pour the solution through the big end of the filter. It will flow freely out of the bottom pointy end.
4. Let is sit for about 5 minutes, then run tap water through it to rinse it. When the water coming out of the softener is no longer salty, the water softener is fully charged/recharged and ready for use.
5. Put the softener back on the tube by simply pushing the pointed end back into the soft inlet tube.
6. Put them both back into a full water tank. It may float up, and this is normal as long as the end that allows water to enter the machine is submerged. You do not want the machine to accidentally suck in some air, causing the pump to lose its prime.

The machine is now ready to be turned on and used again.

I see that a previous post asks how install the water softener on the rancilio silvia, but the response doesn't really answer. I need this information. While it may be obvious to someone more experienced, I am a first timer. You may want to consider sending the softener with some instructions.

WholeLatteLoveRep1 Hi Lori! The water softener is very easy to install. If you look into your water reservoir you will see two tubes. The longer of the two tubes is the intake tube for the pump. You will want to slide the end of the tube over the small nipple on the water softener and then place it inside the water tank (be sure that you have followed the instructions on soaking the softener before hand). Be sure that you lay the softener horizontally on the bottom of the tank. That's all that you need to do!

Is this suitable for use with the Expobar Brewtus III V? I can't find the softener that came with my machine on your site but this looks similar.

TechMilanoItalia While they function the same, the Expobar model has a narrower tip to fit in the smaller diameter hoses of the Expobar. Give us a call and we can order that for you. =)
