Greetings - I have a FrancisFrancis X5 and need to replace the standard double spout on the portafilter. The original one broke.

Does anyone know where I can purchase this? Or the entire portafilter assembly with the double spout?

Please advise.

I own a refurbished X5. I have only used it 2 times in 3 years. When I turn it on I leave both buttons in waiting for the water to get hot enough for the bottom light to blink. In less than 3 minutes the machine starts to make a high pitch sound and steam shoots through the filter holder. Is this normal? I always shut off the machine out of fear. How long should it take for the water to get hot enough to make espresso?
Thanks for the help.

WholeLatteLoveRep1 Hi Gail! Sorry to hear of your troubles. It's not a normal machine function to make that sound or to begin to shoot steam, but, because you have used the machine so infrequently you may have a bit of scale built up in the unit. This can cause the group valve to be stuck open, so once the machine starts to build up pressure, you get the high pitch sound and steam. With the X5 unit it only takes about 5-6 minutes to heat to brew temperature. At this point I would recommend getting the machine professionally descaled. Doing it at home after 3 years could potentially harm some of the internal components. Once the machine is back up and running you'll want to be sure to do a descale cycle every two to three months.

Before making espresso, I run at least one cup of water (espresso) before making an espresso.

I am noticing with the handle and filter in appropriate position (without espresso or a pod) that water seems to burst out the sides instead of flowing down the center of the filter and spout handle. This last for about a second and then the water flows properly down the filter and spout into an espresso cup. This leaves quite although it's just water.

Once the pod is in - the machine seems to work fine.

A friend of mine has the same machine and has never experienced anything like this.

Please help !!!

Whole Latte Love Staff It sounds like the group gasket needs replacing. I believe the reason you’re not seeing the problem with the pods is because the paper that hangs a bit over the edge of the portafilter is compensating for the gasket problem. If you brewed with ground coffee you would probably still see the leak. FrancisFrancis should be able to provide you with a replacement group gasket easily. They can be reached by phone at 877-854-4141.

I use illy fine grind and tamp it with at least 30 pounds of pressure, but the coffee comes out too fast. About 14 seconds for a double shot. I time it from when espresso hits the cup. Should I start counting from time the pump starts or when espresso drips? Should i send it in for repair or am I overconcerned?

Whole Latte Love Staff You should start timing your shot from the moment you activate the pump (press the brew button). I think you’ll actually find that your shots are fairly on target, but if you find that they’re still running a little short, I would recommend trying to tamp a little harder to compensate for the fact that you can’t change the grind setting.

I am trying to buy a tamp for my Francis X5 - do you have the size of the X5's portafilter?

Whole Latte Love Staff The FrancisFrancis has a 56mm portafilter, so it would accommodate a 56mm tamper. However, your machine should have come with a tamper that you will need to use in order to brew with ground coffee properly. This is because the base of the tamper is actually the shower screen necessary for even distrubution of water over the coffe grounds during brewing. When you tamp down your coffee, turn the tamper handle counter-clockwise about a 1/4 inch, which will release the handle from the base and allow you to remove it. The base/shower screen should remain in the portafilter for brewing. After brewing is complete, you can reattach the handle to remove it. If you don’t have this tamper, I would recommend contacting FrancisFrancis directly at 877-854-4141 to order a replacement.

Hopefully someone here can help -- I have a FrancisFrancis! x5 that I use mostly with ground coffee. Unfortunately, it requires the use of a tamper whose screen is left on top of the portafilter/ground coffee unit when the coffee is made. Is it possible to purchase one of the tamper/filter screens from the company? I can't find anything on the net.
