Gaggia MDF
how much beans should i grind for 2 shots of espresso on the MDF grinder, I just dont want to leave extra coffee in the doser. I have a gaggia classic.

Gaggia MDF
I am planning on purchasing a Saeco Aroma or Poemia, but upgrading to a non-pressurized portafilter for the machine. Which would give me a better grind, the Baratza Virtuoso or the Gaggia MDF? Would the Gaggia MDF work with the 53mm portafilter on the Saeco machines?

A A BpNpJp, Both of those grinders are excellent grinders at that price point. I have the MDF paired with my Gaggia Classic and home and have no issues getting a great shot out of that setup. The choice really is yours, as the Baratza is a doserless style grinder, and the MDF has a doser. As far as grind quality goes, you cannot go wrong either way.

Sanfam ♦ While the MDF is a fantastic grinder, the portafilter bracket protruding from the base sits too high to use any of the 53mm Portafilters supplied by manufacturers like Saeco, Capresso, and DeLonghi due to their increased height. On the current version of this grinder, this holding arm is non-removable (It's actually molded into the base). It would, however, make a perfect companion to a Gaggia Evolution or Espresso--Their 58mm Portafilter is the perfect size and shape for use with the MDF, and either machine ships with Gaggia's Pressurized Filter Basket.

I've had an MDF grinder for the 14 years. I have to replace the doser arm, maybe the burs (I'm now down to setting 2 for espresso) and my wife just blew the fuse on it last night! Question is, looking at replacing those 3 items, is it economically feasible vs buying a new MDF currently on sale or even a Rancilio Rocky? What would be the cost of the fuse alone and do you have instructions to replace it? thank you

It will be about 100 dollars to replace those items. We do have technical support and emails with instructions to help. I am nit sure what is your best choice. The fuse alone will be 7 dollars plus shipping.

Which would be better for my purposes, the Gaggia MDF or the Breville Smart Grinder? I would be grinding mainly for lattes made with a Rancilio Silvia, but would also like to grind drip coffee and occasionally Greek coffee. Thanks!

Michael Rosso ♦ David...Thank you for your interest in the Gaggia MDF and Breville Smart Grinders. The Breville Smart Grinder is more versatile when changing from one type of grind to another. The Gaggia MDF is a great grinder , however it is only a Doser grinder and it would be hard to switch and dispense different grinds. Thanks.

I've had my Gaggia MDF for years! Great grinder. However, the dosing handle just broke. Anyway to replace/repair?

I have a la Pavoni EPC-8 that I use 2-3 times/day and a drip coffee maker that my wife uses once a day. I owned a Virtuoso grinder that worked well for us until it broke and tried to replace it with the Capresso Infinity, but the grind isn't fine enough on that machine. I'm considering the Gaggia MDF but wonder if there would be a better choice for me in that price range. I would consider another Virtuoso but am a little gun shy because the one I bought only lasted about two years.

You may be able to get your Baratza fixed. Go to the website www.bartaza.com. They have all kinds of technical support available on line. I do like the Baratza grinders. I would look at the Baratza Virtuoso Preciso. The Gaggia is a good grinder but is better suited to straight espresso.

I'm looking at the MDF and the Breville BCG800XL Smart Grinder and while I like the styling of the Breville, there are no reviews here to give me any idea of which direction to go. Can you give me some thoughts on each grinder.

I would get the Gaggia if you have a Gaggia machine. The portafilter seems to fit best in the MDF as compared to some of the other machines. It does a great job for espresso the MDF. I think it is more of a true espresso grinder than the Smart grinder. The Smart grinder would be a better grinder if you want to grind many different types of coffee say for drip or French Press. I like it ease of use and ability to change grinds for the different brewing methods. I hope this helps.

The starting point for a double shot would be 14 grams of coffee. The way I always use the MDF is this:
Let it grind for 10 seconds
Pull lever to dispense ground
Every second or so pull again until portafilter is just about full
Turn off grinder before your last pull to fill the portafilter
Give it one last pull to top it off
That should keep as much ground coffee out of the hopper as possible.
