Trying to decide between this grinder and the baratza virtuoso 586 mainly for espresso. how do they compare?

mjackson ♦ The Baratza in my opinion is better suited for espresso.I Like the Breville more for drip coffee. I think the range of fine grind will be more repeatable with the Baratza.

I like a dark french roast for morning drip and espresso for afternoon and evening. Will the Brevill BCG800XL likely be OK with both? I'm mainly concerned about having to clean the burrs frequently due to the more oily dark roast which according to some reviewers claim clog them.

mjackson ♦ With any grinder the darker the bean the more cleaning. With this grinder it is a good grinder but may struggle with a really dark bean for espresso. It will help if you clean it often to make it work more reliably. You may want to go a little better if you are going to use a really dark espresso, perhaps look at the Rancilio Rocky.

I just tried my BCG800XL for the first time -- total failure. The beans are dropping down out of the hopper into the grinding area, and it makes grinding noises, but no grounds are coming out. I've followed the instructions several times for taking it apart and trying to dislodge a blockage, but no luck. Any other suggestions before I send it back?

Sanfam ♦ Unfortunately, our Technical Support team won't be able to offer much help with this particular model, as it is supported directly through Breville. Their technical support department is quite friendly. More information about how to contact them can be found at http://www.brevilleusa.com/support .

Since I want to use the grinder for both morning drip and evening espresso. So it seems like I would want to bean hoppers. Can I buy an extra hopper?

mjackson ♦ Claudia,
Unfortunately that is a part we do not stock. You may be able to get one from Breville. It may be easier to empty or switch the beans easier then switching hoppers as I don't think the hopper is designed to sit very stable outside of the grinder.

I've read that Breville rereleased these grinders with shim kit updates that allow for a better espresso grind. It is said that these grinders with a product number ending in a number 27 or above are the newer version. Are the ones being sold on your site the original or released version? (Is it possible to check the product number?)

Thank you!

L Jed Berliner Any change with this answer? I've now read that the Smart Grinder has been released again without any shim kits at all. Got any?

I have a Gaggia 11300 Baby D espresso machine. Will this grinder get the grounds fine enough to use with the commercial portafilter on the espresso machine? We have used a Gaggia MM grinder for 19 years and it is finally giving up the ghost. Thanks!!

So far I only brew drip coffee from my 14-cup Cuisinart coffee maker. I want to upgrade from a blade grinder to a conical burr grinder. I have been looking at the Breville BCG800XL and the Baratza Virtuoso. Since reviews are so inconsistent, I would like your opinion.

Zack Smith Phyllis, Both machine will do a good job at giving you a consistent grind. One of the nice things about both grinders is that if you ever decided to purchase an espresso machine both will be able to produce a good espresso grind. The Virtuoso has been out longer than the Breville but from the feedback that we do get from customers I would say that both grinders would be a solid choice.
